Dialects have always had a negative reputation, and have been considered beneath the national language. Even the literature composed in the various regional languages has been considered inferior to the Italian one until only a few years ago, because it was thought that this literature had as an exclusive theme the peasant-popular world. / This thesis will not only demonstrate that dialects are languages deserving of respect, but also that Lucano dialect literature is not bogged down to the peasant-popular world. In fact, it is capable of expressing any concept that any national language is capable of, even if that concept does not originate in the peasant-popular world.

Cette recherche propose une analyse de l’histoire sociale et économique de la Basilicate, à partir de l’échelle locale afin de fournir une contribution à l’histoire générale du royaume de Naples au XVe siècle. L’étude ne se limite pas aux décisifs changements politiques ; institutionnels, sociaux et économiques – qui ont eu lieu à cette époque-là, mais elle parcourt les principales phases de la crise du XIVe siècle et des dernières années du gouvernement angevin. Le but est de rendre plus claire et évidente la reprise qui se produit sous le règne des souverains aragonais, qui donnèrent – pour leur part – la stabilité politique et la force institutionnelle nécessaire pour la mise au point des réformes. Les sources utilisées pour cette recherche se trouvent vraiment dispersées. Il a fallu visiter non seulement les archives de la région – à Potenza et à Matera – mais aussi l’Archivio di Stato di Napoli et, à Barcelone, l’Archivo de la Corona de Aragón. Après avoir défini le tableau administratif et paysager, ainsi que le réseau routier de la Basilicate, on examine les événements politiques et militaires par rapport à leur conséquences sur la société et l’économie du royaume. Les chapitres suivants portent sur la démographie de la province, la création des lignages et des vastes possessions féodales, le système productif et d’exploitation des entreprises seigneuriales. On continue avec l’analyse de la production agricole, de l’élevage et des spécificités de la région relativement au phénomène qui a été appelé « révolution agricole ». Le texte poursuit avec des chapitres sur la manufacture et l’industrie extractive, une partie dédiée aux foires et une conclusion sur les minorités juives et grecques-albanaises et le système de taxation.Le tableau que s’en tire est celui d’un territoire de l’arrière-pays, parfois renfermé et sauvage, mais qui participe pleinement à l’élan, à la modernisation et au développement économique général qui se réalise au XVe siècle : c’est à cette époque-là qu’on assiste à une majeure intégration régionale et interrégionale. / This research promises an analysis of the social and economic life in the Basilicata region, in order to supply a contribution to the history of the whole Kingdom of Naples in the XV century. The study also examines the XIV century crisis in order to highlight the institutional social and economic change of the next century. The sources used for this research are very dispersed: I had to visit the archives of Potenza and Matera (in Basilicata). the Archivio di Stato di Napoli and the Archivo de la Corona de Aragon in Barcelona. After a description of the administrative organization, the landscape and the road network; I examine the political and military events with regard to their economic and social consequences. The text continues with the demography and an analysis of the process of creating the lineages and the vast feudal estates, with their system of production, cultivation and livestock farming. The volume ends with a reference to the fairs, the manufacture and the extractive activities, the Jewish and the Greek.-Albanian minority and the fiscal system. The final image is that of an inland region that is part of the modernisation and the general economic development: this century witnesses an extended regional and interregional integration.
