Bath in the time of Ralph Allen : a cultural survey.Rogers, Barbara Marion January 1968 (has links)
The following survey of the changing aspects of life in Bath during the first fifty years of the eighteenth century makes no claim to be an exhaustive study of the subject, but endeavours to show how the personality of one of her citizens did much to influence the development of the city. Bath, seen as a complete picture in miniature of English society of the time, possessed in Ralph Allen a man eager to forward her interests; a man who combined with his vast personal fortune a character and personality which earned him the respect and veneration of many of the most outstanding figures of the age. At his death a unique phase in Bath's history was brought to an end.
In preparing this survey I have consulted the works of various contemporary commentators as well as the writings of a number of modern social historians who have examined in detail the civic, social, and architectural growth of the city during the period under review. Most valuable among these have been Barbeau's Life and Letters at Bath in the XVIIIth Century, R.A.L. Smith's Bath, Bryan Little's Bath Portrait and Willard Connely's Beau Nash: Monarch of Bath and Tunbridge Wells. Unfortunately I was unable to use Professor Benjamin Boyce's The Benevolent Man; A Life of Ralph Allen of Bath, which was not published until late in 1967, after the final draft of this thesis had been completed.
In addition to the above, I have also consulted the works of those principal eighteenth century authors who were directly influenced by the cultural life of Bath, and who have given us immediate and vivid impressions derived from the daily life of this extraordinary city. Defoe, Steele, Pope, Fielding, Goldsmith, and Smollett all knew Bath well, and all have incorporated in their works the essence of Bath life. Moreover, Pope and Fielding were much indebted to Allen personally; Pope carried on a constant correspondence with him, and Fielding used him as the prototype for Squire Allworthy in Tom Jones. As for Goldsmith, he centred his interest on Beau Nash and left for us the first full length biographical study of this dynamic contemporary of Allen.
In summary, I have attempted to show, through contemporary and later documents, that Ralph Allen, by his manifold activities, contributed greatly to the cultural development of Bath, and that Bath itself was a brilliant mirror, reflecting the ever-changing cultural and social life of England itself. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

Development of a control strategy for the open slag bath furnaces at Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation Ltd.Steinberg, W.S. (William Skinner) 06 July 2009 (has links)
This project was the first step in developing a control system for the open slag bath furnace at Highveld Steel, in order to maximize production levels and product quality. In this dissertation, available knowledge from literature and practical experience is included. This is then processed to propose a realistic control system with the current resources available at Highveld Steel. Through research and practical experience it is shown that these furnaces are extremely sensitive to raw material quality and consistency of decision making. This is a result of the open bath configuration that necessitates the careful control of the excess energy, and the raw material composition supplied to the furnace. Through this project it was shown that both the productivity and the product quality (vanadium recovery) can be increased by simply controlling the feed-topower ratio and correct use of correction material. This has the effect of stabilizing the process energy balance which results in smaller slag temperature variations and therefore also less product quality variability. Through controlling the feed-power-ratio, energy consumption was also shown to be reduced, since excess power is minimized without negatively impacting on productivity. In this project a proposal is made to control the flow of material between the two stages in the process, which is based on either being kiln or furnace constrained. A better tapping scheduling is also proposed, based on both material accumulations inside the furnace and the charging condition of the furnace. This results in having sufficient pressure to tap iron and slag at good rates and should also yield consistent tapping weights and add to general process stability. However, engineering availability strongly impacts on both process control and furnace productivity. Consistent availability of the furnace and its supporting systems is hence essential for optimal operation. / Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering / unrestricted

Krajina pretvorená / Landscape transformedKažimír, Oliver January 2017 (has links)
The landscape has been transforming during the time – by people and by itself. A human has adjusted the environment to his needs - material, physical and spiritual. The relation between a man and the landcape varies. A place of previous extractive quarry Bankov contains more layers that were overlapped by anthropogenic operations. The authentic land had its significant spiritual meaning inscribed into a pilgrimage route containing small sacral objects which connected people with the land and the place. An exploitation of the land transformed its values. Extraction caused a loss of previous prints in the landscape - not only a loss of its material matter, but especially its importance for people living in the area. The realtion between a man and the landscape has been lost. The land has gone through a radical transfomation of morfology - a fascinating and dynamic geological diversion that creates specific character of a place has been formed. It is an abandoned mysterious area invoking contradictory feelings of danger and calmness. Perception and experiencing the land is a motive of recovery… ...that refers to a man – an individual human being. The project understands a recovery as a sanitation and transformation of an organism – which a land recovering after exploatation definitely is. Time, space and living conditions are elements determinating natural recovery of the land. Those features has influenced the project which analogically takes an inspiration for a physical and mental recovery of a man. The regeneration is happening by exposing and reinterpretation of the lost values through which a man identifies himself with the place.

Formation of a bath - Geological processes in ArchitectureVogler, Nina-Christin 28 September 2005 (has links)
Geological processes define every place on earth. They tell us their story of formation, of shaping events that have long passed and about current conditions that continue to form the place. Each place therefore reveals its historical events and points towards its future.
Man manipulates these processes and often ends the dialog between the past and the future.
I wanted to explore an architecture related to this dialog, that occupies a site but also enters its existence and future.
Erosion is the all-encompassing term for the processes that constantly sculpt and ultimately wear down the landscape of the earth. It accompanies weathering, the break up of material at the earth`s surface through chemical, physical and biological processes.
Gravity plays a vital role in these processes. It is urging all of the erosional debris downhill. Most of the material is carried by running water, transported downstream often to the world`s oceans. / Master of Architecture
