Perceived Affective and Behavioral Characteristics of Mother-Daughter Relationships and Subsequent Mentoring Relationships

McShane, Anne 01 May 1989 (has links)
Mentoring has been recognized as an important relationship in a variety of circumstances. This study was conducted for the purpose of determining the perceived benefits or disadvantages of a mentor relationship and identifying characteristics of the relationship. Another objective was to explore to what extent the nature of the mother/daughter relationship functions as a factor that makes the choice of a mentoring pattern more likely. The study sample consisted of 47 females, 12 graduate students and 35 assistant or associate professors on the faculty at Utah State University. The subjects completed several mother/daughter inventories, a mentoring inventory, and a personality inventory. Twenty subjects were interviewed for a more in-depth exploration of both their mentoring experience and mother/daughter relationship. Subjects were divided into groups based on gender of the person most facilitative of their professional objectives. The male-Mentored, female-mentored, and non-mentored groups were comparable on measures of perceived mother.daughter relationship characteristics and personality variables. The relationship between the score on a mother/daughter attention measure and total mentor score was .29. The Pearson correlations between perceived mother rejection and father love was -.61. Subjects were categorized as to whether they et the criteria for having had a mentor based on scores on a mentor inventory. Seventy-eight percent of subjects who specified females as most significant to their career met the criteria for having been mentored. Fifty percent of subjects who indicated a male was most facilitative scored high enough to meet the criteria. A multiple regression model used to predict total mentor score based on perceived mother attention and gender of mentor accounted for 20% of the total variability. An interaction was present between gender of the individual specified to be most significant tot he protege and perceived mother attention. Separate multiple regression equations resulted in a correlation of .53 between mother attention and mentor score when the specified individual was male and .16 when the individual named was female.

Construct validity of the scales for rating the behavioral characteristics of superior students : a confirmatory factor analysis of internal structure

Gridley, Betty E. January 1984 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate the construct validity of the Scales for Rating the Behavioral Characteristics of Superior Students (SRBCSS). A confirmatory factor analysis was used to determine if items from the scales of Learning, Motivational, and Creativity Characteristics were able to identify separate homogeneous sets of behavioral characteristics of gifted and talented students. The subjects were 152 third- and fourth-grade students who had been identified as being potential candidates for inclusion in a program for gifted and talented students. SRBCSS forms were completed by regular classroom teachers. The sample was split to allow for cross-validation of results. Two nested three-factor models were established a priori. Maximum likelihood estimates were calculated using LISREL IV (Jorskog & Sorbom, 1978). Models were evaluated using the overall chi-square, residual matrices, the ratio of chi-square to degrees of freedom, increment of fit indices, and differences chi-square.The proposed structure of three-uncorrelated constructs was unable to reconstruct the obtained correlations. The three factors of Learning, Motivation and Creativity were necessary but not sufficient to describe the relationships among the scale items. Allowing the constructs themselves to be interrelated improved the amount of covariation among the items which could be explained. However, adding a fourth Nonconformity Factor provided a more plausible representation of the data than either three-factor solution. However, labeling of the factors may be somewhat ambiguous due to the nature of the factor loadings of the individual items on them. Cross-validation showed a similar pattern of coefficients for the second sample with some "shrinkage" effect. The results of this study suggest that the validity of the constructs of the SRBCSS as establishedin is questionable. While separate dimensions emerged, they were neither easily interpretable nor distinctly separate. It was not clear if the interrelationships of the scale items were due to a sharing of some underlying dimension or to their placement on the scales. In addition, it was suggested that some higher order factor might be needed to account for the relationships found in the data.

Clinical Instructors’ Perceptions of Effective Student Behavioral Characteristics Among Respiratory Therapy Students in the State of Georgia

Aldabayan, Yousef Saad 13 November 2015 (has links)
Clinical Instructors’ Perceptions of Effective Student Behavioral Characteristics Among Respiratory Therapy Students in the State of Georgia By Yousef Aldabayan (Under the Direction of Dr. Lynda T. Goodfellow) ABSTRACT Background: Student behavioral characteristics are perceived to be crucial factors in developing and nurturing desirable qualities of future professionals. Similar to how respiratory therapy (RT) clinical instructors (CIs) are expected to possess great teaching skills, it is significant to determine the effective student behavioral characteristics among RT students in order to identify what motivates them and what qualities influence their clinical success in relation to the perceptions of RT CIs. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify and acknowledge the effective behavioral characteristics of RT students based on what the RT CIs in the State of Georgia perceive to be most and least important. METHODS: A descriptive survey was used to collect data. The survey was modified and later emailed to all RT CIs and registered proactive members of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), according to their website. The descriptive survey was composed of four main domains, including professional competence, relationship with the CI, personal attributes, and the perceptions of CIs and its role in their motivation to teach. Forty-one behavioral characteristics were revealed on a five-point Likert scale based on importance. RESULTS: One hundred eighty-four responses were received out of the eight hundred surveys emailed to the CIs, with a response rate of 23%. Most of the respondents specified a bachelor degree as their highest degree. From the list of student behavioral characteristics, “Show genuine interest in patients and their care” in clinical was perceived as the most important student behavioral characteristic (M 4.67, S.D ± .57). However, the RT students’ need to “be honest and direct to the CIs” was determined to be the most important behavioral characteristic (M 4.40, S.D ±0.70). In addition, to “demonstrate effective communications skills” was determined as the most important characteristic in the personal attributes domain (M 4.5, S.D ±0.56). Lastly, the “CIs stay motivated to teach and assist students when faced with acceptable student behaviors” was the most important domain of CIs’ perceptions of student behavioral characteristic that motivates them to teach, (M 4.38, S.D ±0.67). CONCLUSION: RT CIs from the list of active AARC members agreed that showing genuine interest in patients and their care was the most effective student behavioral characteristic among RT students in the State of Georgia. According to these findings, it is highly suggested that RT clinical students should work hard in improving their behaviors and attitudes toward their CIs to increase their motivation in achieving their goals in clinical learning.

January 2019 (has links)
A... Methods: This is a cohort study called HPV-UNESP, in which 1638 women of reproductive age were recruited from September 2012 to January 2013. Of this total, 544 women positive for HPV infection participated in longitudinal follow-up for 30 months, in 4 more visits. HPV infection was defined as detection of any of the 36 genotypes tested by the Linear Array Genotyping Test (Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.) and the outcome of interest was infection clearance, defined as the elimination of HPV infection by least two consecutive visits. A structured questionnaire with 58 questions regarding sociodemographic data, behavioral and gynecological characteristics was applied at each visit. Immediately after the interview, all women underwent a gynecological exam, in which, after insertion of the non-lubricated Collins speculum, the vaginal pH with tape (pH 4.0-7.0, Merck, Germany) was measured in the middle third of the vaginal wall. For vaginal microbiota evaluation, samples were collected with vaginal wall swab and the microbiota pattern was classified according to the criteria of Nugent et al. (1991). The whiff test performed by adding 10% KOH solution to the vaginal content was interpreted as positive, negative or doubtful. Endocervical samples were collected with cytobrush for molecular analysis of HPV, Chlamydia trachom... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Behavioral Characteristics of White-Collar Crime and the Pre-Employment Hiring Process

O'Brien, Connie 11 November 2015 (has links)
Organizations use pre-employment tests to identify individuals characterized as having a propensity (likelihood) to commit theft with the intent to limit at-risk hires, thereby reducing the risk of fraud. Pre-employment tests were originally designed to identify a broad range of deviant behaviors such as previous violations of laws, and violations of social norms and organizational policies (O'Bannon et al., 1989), not as predictive indicators of deviant behavior and theft. In addition, the test most commonly used to identify high fraud risk applicants, the integrity test, has limited support as a valid predictor of theft (MacLane & Walmsley, 2010; Ones et al., 2003; Sackett et al., 1989; Van Iddekinge et al., 2012) within the literature. This study empirically examined the efficacy of pre-employment tests to elicit a predictive profile of white-collar crime by testing the relationship between deviant behaviors, personality traits, and integrity. The data for this study was obtained through questionnaires and pre-employment tests administered within the Federal prison system. The total sample consisted of twenty (N=20) convicted white-collar inmates. Results of this sample were compared to the general population statistics as provided by the pre-employment test providers. In line with the literature, positive relationships were found between low integrity and deviant behaviors. Contrary to past literature, no significant relationships were found between Agreeableness and Integrity or Emotional Stability/Neuroticism and Integrity. A positive relationship was found between high Conscientiousness and Integrity. Of particular note, this study found that the failure rate of the overt-integrity test was 45% and 100% for personality tests in identifying individuals with traits consistent with deviant behaviors. This study contributes to the existing literature on personality, integrity and deviant behaviors by providing insights into the nature of the relationships as they relate to white-collar crime. This study also expands the theory of deviant behaviors with a thorough definition within the literature results, which helps to define the dimension and constructs of deviant behaviors within the workplace as it relates to white-collar crime. Finally, this study specifies practical implications to be considered by management and pre-employment test providers for the purpose of enhancing fraud prevention and reducing deviant behaviors within the organization.
