____________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The Latin American population has been under great transformations and today it can be characterized as having a multiethnic constitution, however with three main parental populations influence - European, African and Amerindian. Despite their similarities, each country has a unique history of settlement, since there have been variations in the distribution of the parental populations and in the amount of gene flow between them. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic constitution in Latin American and Caribbean populations and the genetic structure between them. For that matter, four groups of populations and two sets of markers were employed. First, thirteen countries of Latin America and Caribbean (Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Ecuador, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela), were analyzed with STR markers (CSF1PO, D3S1358, D5S818, D7S820, D8S1179, D13S317, D16S539, D18S51, D21S11, FGA, TH01, TPOX and vWA). In a second moment, the differences between the geographic regions of three South-American countries were evaluated (Argentina, Brazil and Colombia) using the same markers. Next, for a more regional analysis, urban populations from Brazilian Middle-Western region were studied using the same markers listed above and Penta E. The settlement of the Brazilian Middle-Western region was also evaluated regarding the comparison of two populations of this region - Goiás and Federal District - using autosomic AIMs - APO, AT3, D1, DRD2-A, ECA, FXIIIB, FyNull, GC, LPL, OCA2, PV92, Rb2300, SB19.3 and TPA25. The analyses of the genetic distance between the Latin American populations and between the regions of the three countries had shown a heterogeneous picture of the distribution of the allelic frequencies. The admixture analysis corroborated the genetic distance data, with the Amerindian parental contribution presenting variations ranging from 5 to 73%, the African from 4 to 90% and the European from 4 to 66%. Regarding the analysis of the populations of the Brazilian Middle-Western region, differentiation between the genetic and genotypic distribution was not observed, probably due the intense gene flow between them. The genetic admixture estimate, considering the STRs markers, was 11% for the Amerindian parental, 21% for the African parental and 68% for the European parental. The results generated with the AIMs were 15%, 21% and 63%, respectively. The majority of the analyzed populations are tri-hybrid, having been formed by three parental groups. These results agree with historical and demographic data of the Latin American populations.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research aimed to analyze and compare the male and female genetic constitution of Middle-West Brazilian region by the investigation of 11 UEPs, an AluYAP element and 4 STRs located in the nonrecombinant region of the Y-chromosome, and, also, 13 SNPs placed in coded regions of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and a 9 bp deletion of mtDNA. These markers were analyzed in 200 unrelated men from Goiás state and Federal District. The analysis of the Y-chromosome and mtDNA markers demonstrated a great genetic diversity between populations. The statistical analysis of the data obtained was done using the ARLEQUIN 2000 software, PopGENE and Z test. The binary markers of Y-chromosome and mtDNA did not indicate statistic supported differences between the populations. However, genetic differences were observed in Y-chromosome STRs analysis (p<0.05). The paternal contribution results indicated a greater European men contribution than African or Amerindian ones. Besides, mtDNA showed a predominance of Amerindian/Asiatic maternal lineage in both populations constitution, followed by African and then a small European contribution. Therefore, the results showed a clear divergence from paternal to maternal lineages. These results corroborated historical data that points to: directional mating between European males and females from any of the main three ethnic groups that colonized Brazil; and to a small number of Amerindians males descendants in nowadays Brazilian populations, which is a consequence of the European colonization.

The specie’s populational biology was analyzed in terms of age structure, reproductive biology, density and sexual ratio. Three transects have been established in a mangrove area next to the river mouth, which were visited monthly. In each transect, 10 squares of 50 × 50 (0.25 cm²) were demarcated, where all specimens of L. leptodactyla were collected, which, in laboratory, were determined the genders, measured the sizes and quantified. Sedimentological analysis (granulometry, organic matter content and humidity) were made in three squares of each transect, comprising the mangroves border, the intermediate region and the riverside, in which interstitial temperature and salinity were also measured. The results showed that L. leptodactyla occurred in every sampled area, however, showed higher affinity for fine sediments. The specie presented a negative correlation for all measured abiotic parameters, except for humidity. However, a strong and significant relationship was only observed for salinity. In terms of populational biology, a density of 36.46 ind./m² was found and sexual ratio corresponded to the expected of 1: 1. The population presented a unimodal frequency distribution, suggesting a continuous reproduction. Meanwhile, the occurrence of ovigerous females and juvenile individuals showed a strong relation with rainfall, thus indicating that the reproductive period occurs in synchrony with the rainy period of the region.

Studies on the distribution of marine organisms are essential for obtaining information on regions affected by human activities and for the understanding of the population dynamics of species. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the abundance, spatial-temporal distribution and population dynamics of the crab Callinectes danae in adjacent region of the Babitonga Bay. Biological and abiotic samples were obtained monthly in the region from July/2010 until June/2011. Samples were collected at 5, 8, 11, 14 and 17m deep, using a fishing boat equipped with doble -rig nets. The number of individuals and the following abiotic factors were recorded at each depth: salinity and bottom temperature, organic matter and sediment texture. A total of 3,999 individuals were collected, with difference between the numbers of males (229) and females (3770). The individuals were measured concerning the carapace width (CW) and classified according to the development stage. The estimated value where 50 % of individuals were able to reproduce was 75.2 mm (CW) for males and 62.9 mm (CW) for females. The value of L ∞ for the growth analysis was fixed based on literature values, where males and females showed the asymptotic width of 102.01 and 84.41 respectively, the growth constants of 0.007 and 0.006/day, as well as the longevity of 633 and 702 days. Prevalence of female in larger size classes may be associated with characteristics of this species, which individuals migrate to different regions depending on the life stage. Reproductive females search for areas with higher salinity, while juvenile and males preferably live in estuarine areas, corroborating with is found in the current literature. Reproduction was continuous showing that the sampled area has a primordial importance for the perpetuation of this species, since it shelters a very high percentage of reproductive females. The information from this study...

In this thesis we study the population biology of host-parasite systems, with a systematic view of the e?ects produced by multiple infections of di?erent parasites on a same host population. This situation is akin to multiple species competing for a shared resource. As parasites compete for a host, several outcomes at the population level can appear. If both parasites cannot jointly infect the same host, then the ?ttest parasite eliminates the other. When confection is possible, the pattern changes, and coexistence of both parasites becomes possible. Finally, if a parasite can displace the other within the host, the so-called intraguild e?ect, the outcome will strongly be dependent on the income rate of new hosts, which is determined by environmental factors. We studied this system through a mathematical model which is broad enough to encompass these situations. We proceed by steps: ?rst we framed a simple mathematical model for a single parasite/host case and as we progress to other cases, our mathematical model includes new terms and ?nally it is shaped into a complete model. Our methods are twofold. We study analytically the stability of the disease-free state, which allows us to give conditions for the ability of the parasites to invade a disease-free/non-infected population. On the other hand, we resort to numerical methods to study the long-term behavior of the system, which in all cases tends to a ?xed point. The main focus is to know which parasite prevails or if they are able to coexist, and determine the conditions that regulate this outcome . Through bifurcation diagrams we analyzed the importance of the richness of the environment, de?ned by the rate of production of new hosts. We found that the long-term states depend crucially on this rate. Our main original contribution is related to the study of the intraguild e?ect. Depending of the host income rate we can have four di?erent states, which are a disease...

Abstract: In this thesis we study the population biology of host-parasite systems, with a systematic view of the effects produced by multiple infections of different parasites on a same host population. This situation is akin to multiple species competing for a shared resource. As parasites compete for a host, several outcomes at the population level can appear. If both parasites cannot jointly infect the same host, then the fittest parasite eliminates the other. When confection is possible, the pattern changes, and coexistence of both parasites becomes possible. Finally, if a parasite can displace the other within the host, the so-called intraguild effect, the outcome will strongly be dependent on the income rate of new hosts, which is determined by environmental factors. We studied this system through a mathematical model which is broad enough to encompass these situations. We proceed by steps: first we framed a simple mathematical model for a single parasite/host case and as we progress to other cases, our mathematical model includes new terms and finally it is shaped into a complete model. Our methods are twofold. We study analytically the stability of the disease-free state, which allows us to give conditions for the ability of the parasites to invade a disease-free/non-infected population. On the other hand, we resort to numerical methods to study the long-term behavior of the system, which in all cases tends to a fixed point. The main focus is to know which parasite prevails or if they are able to coexist, and determine the conditions that regulate this outcome . Through bifurcation diagrams we analyzed the importance of the richness of the environment, defined by the rate of production of new hosts. We found that the long-term states depend crucially on this rate. Our main original contribution is related to the study of the intraguild effect. Depending of the host income rate we can have four different states, which are a disease... / Doutor
