Movement of the Eurasian perch (Perca fluviatilis) : Individual responses to abiotic factors

Sandberg, Linda January 2020 (has links)
Movement increases the probability for an individual to find food resources, but also increase the metabolic costs and exposure to predators. Hence, swimming behavior of fish is strongly coupled to fitness. Even though swimming activity has been studied in numerous laboratory settings, less is known about in situ activity and its dependence on abiotic factors (temperature, light conditions and barometric pressure). In this study I hypothesized that the activity increases with 1) increasing temperature and decrease with 2) barometric pressure variability and 3) average light conditions (h/day). In order to test the universality of the three hypotheses I also searched for size dependent effects. Fish activity (km/day) was measured in three lakes on individual fish (N=14-21 per lake) using acoustic telemetry providing tracking of fish at a time resolution from seconds to hours. A positive correlation between temperature and swimming activity in line with my first hypothesis was only observed in one of the lakes. The activity decreased with increased variability in barometric pressure in two of the lakes, a finding supporting my second hypothesis. Meanwhile increased light conditions (h/day) decreased activity in one of the lakes, as predicted by my third hypothesis. Nevertheless, none of my hypotheses were valid in all three of the lakes and perch reacted differently to the abiotic factors. One of the possible explanations for this is the importance of size differences as I noticed that the swimming activity differed between bigger and smaller individuals. My findings suggest that not only the temperature, barometric pressure and light conditions alone predict the activity in perch, but also the fish individual size, predation and the metabolic costs linked to thermoregulation.

Rôles de différents facteurs écologiques sur le transfert trophique des éléments traces chez des téléostéens marins / Roles of several ecological factors on the trophic transfer of trace elements in marine teleosts

Pouil, Simon 13 October 2017 (has links)
Teleost fish accumulate metals through different pathways and It is now well established that food plays a major role in this accumulation. Nevertheless, there is still lack of knowledge on the variability of metal trophic transfer in fish in connection with their life context. The present doctoral research aims at characterizing the influence of biological and environmental factors on the assimilation efficiency (AE) of essential and non-essential metals in fish. AE determination during a series of experiment under controlled condition reveals that biological factors, in particular the type of food ingested, play a predominant role in metal AE in fish while environmental factors (pH, temperature, salinity ...) seem to have a limited influence. All the work carried out during this thesis allows a better understanding of the trophic transfer of metals in fish and, thus bring new knowledge in the field of fish nutrition and ecotoxicology.

Evaluate this influence is a manner to understand the ecology of these organisms within their environment. Unpredictable environments such as Brazilian tropical dry-forest, the Caatinga, represents a challenge for the bees, once the combination of extended periods with little funding and extreme weather conditions, makes the survival of bees difficult. In this study, we investigated the foraging nectar of stingless bee Melipona subnitida within their natural habitat, Caatinga. The experiments were conducted in the city of Mossoró/RN, Brazil. The findings show that bees M. subnitida has an active annual foraging despite behavioral changes and that these changes are influenced by factors temperature, relative humidity, rainfall and amount of available floral resources. M. subnitida presents strategies to survive the environmental conditions of the region, especially climate. In addition to the diluted nectar collected during hot and dry periods, there was the first time for this specie collection of water.

Vliv biotických a abiotických faktorů na teritoriální a rozmnožovací chování vážek (Odonata) / Biotic and abiotic factors affecting territorial and reproductive behaviour of dragonflies (Odonata)

KYBICOVÁ, Tereza January 2015 (has links)
Habitat selection, territorial behaviour and reproductive behaviour of dragonflies (Odonata) are discussed and biotic and abiotic factors affecting their territorial and reproductive behaviour are reviewed. The most important biotic factors are predation risk affecting larval survival and the presence of aquatic vegetation, which provides spatial structure. The review is complemented by a field study of territorial and reproductive behavior of dragonflies at an experimental site, at which the quality of individual pools was manipulated by a combination of the presence or absence of artificial vegetation and the presence or absence of an introduced top predator (late-instar larvae of Anax and Aeshna).
