The Impacts of Agriculture and Plantation Forestry in a Selection of Upper Catchments of the Strzelecki Ranges, Victoria

The intensive nature of land uses in the Strzelecki Ranges poses significant threats to landscape values and water quality. A comprehensive catchment strategy was developed based on sustainability science concepts incorporating the careful management of landscape values, proper land management approaches, and government policy and legislative change to ensure that agriculture, forestry and other land uses become sustainable in this sensitive environment. The readily measurable water quality indicators of turbidity, flow, electrical conductivity, and water temperature were used to determine the impacts of the major land uses in the Strzeleckis. From a water quality perspective, there was a trend of decreasing water quality with increasing intensity in land management. However, from a total sediment load perspective, the forest area contributed the highest total sediment load due to higher volumes of steam flow suggesting that natural processes in the Strzeleckis may remain the principal mechanisms for sediment movement within the catchment. An incidental but significant finding was extensive bioturbation along the riparian zone of the plantation area, the extent of which was not observed in the other catchments. This finding suggested that bioturbation may have been the most significant contributor to poorer water quality flowing from in the plantation catchment. The project developed insights into the major environmental processes active in the upper catchment of the Morwell River. Understanding of the contributions to total sediment loads from natural erosional processes and bioturbation, findings related to the impacts on water quality from agricultural practices, and encountering negligible impacts from conservative timber harvesting practices demonstrate that catchment management approaches need to be tailored to achieve sustainability in land uses across the landscape. Key recommendations include the re-establishment and protection of riparian zones in agricultural catchments, the careful assessment and setting of stream buffer zone widths for timber harvesting operations, and the need for further work to map the extent of natural processes such as bioturbation and stream bank erosion. To mitigate these issues, government policy and legislation will need to focus on the preservation and enhancement of the Crown land riparian zones. Recommended changes to current administrative land management arrangements for these sensitive areas include a move from licensing riparian zones for agricultural practices such as grazing to conservation.

Biodégradation des herbicides en sols tempérés - Contrôle des communautés bactériennes dégradantes par la bioturbation du sol

L'intensification de l'agriculture s'est accompagnée d'une utilisation importante de pesticides qui a généré une pollution généralisée des sols et des eaux, problème environnemental majeur et actuel. Sous la pression de sélection liée à l'usage régulier de pesticides (molécules xénobiotiques) des bactéries du sol se sont adaptées à ces molécules et ont acquis la capacité de les utiliser comme source nutritive et donc de les dégrader. La biodégradation constitue un service écologique majeur fournit par le sol, puisqu'elle est à la base des capacités épuratrices du sol et au-delà, de la résilience des écosystèmes. Le sol étant également un grand réservoir de biodiversité, ces bactéries dégradantes sont sous contrôle de différentes interactions biotiques et notamment celles impliquant les lombriciens, qualifiés d'organismes ingénieurs des sols de par leur action de bioturbation. Grâce à un développement méthodologique important et novateur (RT-qPCR, SIP-ARN), nous avons étudié l'impact de la bioturbation du sol par la macrofaune lombricienne sur les communautés bactériennes du sol intervenant dans la biodégradation de molécules xénobiotiques. L'atrazine a été utilisée comme molécule modèle à double titre : d'un point de vu fondamental, son utilisation pendant plus de 50 ans en France a permis aux bactéries du sol de s'adapter et au titre de l'actualité, bien qu'elle soit interdite en France depuis 2003, il s'agit toujours du principal polluant retrouvé dans les eaux souterraines et de surface. Nous avons analysé par une double approche quantitative et qualitative l'impact de la bioturbation du sol par les lombriciens sur l'abondance, l'activité et la diversité des bactéries indigènes du sol et sur celles dégradant l'atrazine. Nous avons mis en évidence que : (i) la digestion du sol par les lombriciens stimule l'activité d'une partie des bactéries du sol mais qu'une autre fraction ne résiste pas au passage dans le tube digestif des vers, (ii) la bioturbation du sol par les lombriciens génère des ‘hot spot' pour l'activité de dégradation de l'atrazine. Ainsi dans les parois de galeries les bactéries dégradantes sont sélectionnées, la dissipation de l'atrazine est rapide et les premiers acteurs du processus de dégradation ont été identifiés, (iii) la dégradation accélérée de l'atrazine dépend d'espèces bactériennes clés interagissant au sein de consortia dégradants, ainsi la diversité des bactéries dégradantes n'est pas corrélée à la fonction de dégradation. L'ensemble des résultats obtenus nous montre également que l'impact de la bioturbation par la macrofaune lombricienne sur l'activité de dégradation dépend des propriétés physico-chimiques et biologiques initiales du sol. L'ensemble de ces connaissances présente un intérêt dans un contexte de bioremédiation in situ des sols pollués puisque les lombriciens constituent une grande part de la macrofaune dans nos sols tempérés et qu'ils modifient significativement les bactéries dégradant l'atrazine au sein des microsites de sols qu'ils génèrent.

Caractérisation physique et mécanique des sols marins d'offshore profond

L'exploration et la production pétrolière en mer s'étendent vers des profondeurs d'eau sans cesse croissantes. Dans le Golfe de Guinée ou le Golfe du Mexique, les compagnies pétrolières exploitent actuellement des champs situés par des profondeurs d'eau de 1500 m à 2000 m. Les sols marins rencontrés sur ces zones d'offshore très profond présentent des caractéristiques particulières, différentes de celles des sédiments rencontrés sur le plateau continental. Ces sont essentiellement des sédiments argileux très fins normalement consolidés ou sous-consolidés dotés d'un comportement mécanique spécifique et complexe. La résistance au cisaillement non drainé est en général très faible, mais curieusement, sur certaines zones, on trouve en surface une couche avec des cohésions dix fois plus élevées qu'au dessous. Les approches conventionnelles ne permettent pas d'expliquer cette couche indurée. L'objectif de cette thèse a été d'améliorer la compréhension du comportement mécanique de ces sols de grandes profondeurs et d'étudier en particulier l'effet de la minéralogie, de la physico chimie et de la microstructure. Plusieurs hypothèses ont été envisagées pour expliquer l'origine de la couche indurée en surface : effet physico-chimique, bioturbation, vitesse de sédimentation. Les mesures physico chimiques et mécaniques effectuées sur des carottes disponibles ne permettent pas de trancher de façon définitive. Il est probable qu'il n'existe pas une cause unique. Plusieurs améliorations des procédures des essais d'identification des sols ont été proposées (teneur en matière organique, minéralogie, granulométrie). Les propriétés thixotropes de ces sols grands fonds ont été caractérisées par des mesures rhéologiques. Le comportement mécanique des sols a été étudié par des essais oedométriques et des essais triaxiaux. Les sédiments des grands fonds du Golfe de Guinée sont caractérisés par une forte compressibilité, éventuellement liée à la présence importante de smectite. La déstructuration du sol naturel en cours de compression a été bien observée. Les conditions expérimentales et les procédures opérationnelles d'essais triaxiaux drainés et non drainés sous très faibles contraintes ont été améliorées. La sensibilité des sédiments s'est démontrée être un paramètre bien adapté pour décrire le comportement d'un sédiment naturel structuré tel que celui du Golfe de Guinée. La microstructure du sol a été étudiée à l'aide d'analyse de Porosimétrie au Mercure et d'observations au Microscope Électronique à Balayage. Les observations ont apporté des éléments nécessaires pour clarifier le mécanisme de déstructuration du sol au niveau inter-aggrégats.

Radionuclides in the Baltic Sea : Ecosystem models and experiments on transport and fate

Manmade radionuclides have been introduced to the environment for almost a century. The main source has been the nuclear weapons testing programmes, but accidental releases from the nuclear power production industries have also contributed. The risk to humans from potential releases from nuclear facilities is evaluated in safety assessments. Essential components of these assessments are exposure models, which estimate the transport of radionuclides in the environment, the uptake in biota, and transfer to humans. Recently, there has been a growing concern for radiological protection of the whole environment, not only humans, and a first attempt has been to employ model approaches based on stylised environments and transfer functions to biota based exclusively on bioconcentration factors. They are generally of a non-mechanistic nature and involve no knowledge of the actual processes involved, which is a severe limitation when assessing real ecosystems. The research presented in this thesis attempts to introduce a methodology for modelling exposure of biota that is based on systems ecological theories and concepts. All presented papers concern bioaccumulation and circulation of radionuclides in coastal areas of the Baltic Sea, which is a sea surrounded by several nuclear power plants, waste repositories and reprocessing facilities. Paper I illustrates how an ecosystem model can be used to predict the fate of C-14 in a bay, and to explore the influence of uptake route and water exchange on the concentrations in biota. Due to the longevity of many radionuclides, time spans of thousands of years need to be considered in assessments of nuclear waste facilities. In Paper II, the methodological problems associated with these long timescales are discussed and a new modelling approach is proposed. An extension and generalisation of the C-14 flow model into a generic model for other radionuclides is described and tested in Paper III. This paper also explores the importance of three radionuclide specific mechanisms (plant uptake, excretion and adsorption to organic surfaces) for the concentrations in biota. In Paper IV, the bioaccumulation kinetics of three radionuclides in three key benthic species of the Baltic Sea is studied experimentally. Paper V considers remobilisation and redistribution of sediment-associated radionuclides due to biological mixing, in a microcosm study. The findings in this thesis show both that it was possible to use an ecosystem approach to assess the exposure to biota, and that this approach can handle many of the problems identified in the use of traditional exposure models for radionuclides. To conclude, frameworks for the protection of the environment from ionising radiation would benefit from implementing methodologies based on ecologically sound principles and modelling techniques.

Depositional dynamics of a giant carbonate platform-the Famennian Palliser Formation of Western Canada

Carbonate platforms dominated by great thicknesses of ostensibly uniform, thick bedded, poorly fossiliferous and burrow-mottled, subtidal limestones are found throughout the Phanerozoic, yet are poorly understood. Deposited in the aftermath of the FrasnianFamennian extinction event, the Palliser/Wabamun Formation with a thickness of up to 600 m and an extent of about 600 000 km2 represents one of the largest of such platforms to have ever existed.<p>The architecture and palaeoenvironment of the western side of this epeiric platform is reconstructed based on lateral and vertical variations of microfacies properties. It can be divided into inner and outer ramp and shelf belts that remained submerged virtually throughout the life of the platform. A new subdivision of the Palliser Formation is proposed based on long-term vertical facies patterns in sections with differing facies reflecting relative sealevel dynamics. <p>Limestones of the Palliser Formation record a rather limited benthic community. The soft substrate and abundant bioturbation deterred the settlement of sedentary organisms. Frequent physical disturbance, including storms and bioturbation, augmented water turbidity causing smothering and destruction. For these reasons at least, reef growth was impeded. <p>Furthermore, within the apparent facies monotony, two thirds of non-skeletal grains are generated by obliteration processes. Microendolithic bioerosion and diminution destroyed a substantial proportion of the skeletal particles, mostly crinoids, resulting in small micritized grains. Pervasive bioerosion is linked to excess nutrient flux caused by perturbations to the regional biogeochemical cycle. The Ellesmerian Orogeny and increased colonization of land surfaces by deep-rooting gymnosperms are identified as the cause of mesotrophy. Early seafloor dissolution consumed a vast amount of aragonite skeletons, dasycladalean algae in particular, leaving ample amounts of micritic steinkerns, which in turn broke down into peloids and small intraclasts. These discoveries suggest that large areas of the giant ramp-shelf system were characterized by subtidal dasycladalean and crinoid meadows. Finally, established carbonate classifications are re-evaluated and a revised classification for allochthonous limestones for both outcrop and laboratory is introduced. Special emphasis is laid on clastmatrix relationships. <p>-----------------------------------------------<p> ZUSAMMENFASSUNG<br> Die Palliser/Wabamun Formation ist eine von zahlreichen phanerozoischen Karbonatplattformen, die sich durch große Mächtigkeiten vermeintlich monotoner, fossilarmer, bioturbierter Kalke auszeichnen. Diese 600 m mächtige Abfolge sedimentierte im Schatten des Aussterbeereignisses an der Frasne-Famenne Grenze über einen Zeitraum von 69 Ma. Sie gehört mit einer Ausdehnung von etwa 600.000 km2 zu einer der größten Plattformen dieser Art, die auf unserem Planeten entstanden. Mit Hilfe lateraler und vertikaler Trends mikrofazieller Parameter konnte das Ablagerungsmilieu und die Architektur das westlichen Teils dieser epikontinentalen Plattform rekonstruiert werden. Es werden innere und äußere Rampe und Schelf voneinander unterschieden, die praktisch durchgehend über die ganze Plattformentwicklung überflutet blieben. Le substrat meuble et le phénomène de bioturbation intense ont empêché la colonisation des organismes sédentaires. Les perturbations physiques et fréquentes comme les tempêtes et la bioturbation ont augmenté la turbidité de l'eau de mer, entraînant asphixie et destruction. Au moins pour ces raisons le développement des récifs a été entravé. De plus, malgré l'apparente monotonie des faciès, les deux tiers des grains "non squelettiques" sont issus de processus de destruction. La bioérosion et diminution par microorganismes endolithiques a détruit une proportion substantielle des particules squelettiques, principalement de crinoïdes, résultant en de petits grains micritiques. Cette bioérosion étendue est liée à un excès de nutriments généré par des perturbations d'ordre géographique du cycle biochimique. L'orogénèse Ellesmere et le développement de la colonisation terrestre par les gymnospermes à racine profonde sont proposés comme cause de cette mésotrophie. La dissolution précoce du sédiment des fonds marins a consummé une importante proportion des squelettes aragonitiques, en particulier des algues dasycladales, laissant de grande quantité de steinkerns micritiques, qui à leur tour ont été décomposés en péloides et petits intraclastes. Ces découvertes suggèrent qu'une large partie de ce système de vaste rampe plateforme était caractérisée par des prés subtidaux à dasycladales et crinoïdes. Enfin; la classification longtemps établie des carbonates a été réévaluée et une classification révisée des calcaires allochtones pour leur étude à l'affleurement et en laboratoire est proposée. Un intérêt partulier est porté sur les relations grains-matrices.

Elle est constituée d'une rampe interne et externe ainsi que d'une plateforme au sens strict, qui sont restées pratiquement ennoyées durant toute la durée de vie de cette plateforme. Basée sur la distribution verticale à long-terme des faciès, avec les changements de faciès reflétant les dynamiques du niveau marin, une nouvelle subdivision de la Formation Palliser est proposée. Les calcaires de la Formation Palliser renferment une communauté benthique plutôt restreinte. Le substrat meuble et le phénomène de bioturbation intense ont empêché la colonisation des organismes sédentaires. Les perturbations physiques et fréquentes comme les tempêtes et la bioturbation ont augmenté la turbidité de l'eau de mer, entraînant asphixie et destruction. Au moins pour ces raisons le développement des récifs a été entravé. De plus, malgré l'apparente monotonie des faciès, les deux tiers des grains "non squelettiques" sont issus de processus de destruction. La bioérosion et diminution par microorganismes endolithiques a détruit une proportion substantielle des particules squelettiques, principalement de crinoïdes, résultant en de petits grains micritiques. Cette bioérosion étendue est liée à un excès de nutriments généré par des perturbations d'ordre géographique du cycle biochimique. L'orogénèse Ellesmere et le développement de la colonisation terrestre par les gymnospermes à racine profonde sont proposés comme cause de cette mésotrophie. La dissolution précoce du sédiment des fonds marins a consummé une importante proportion des squelettes aragonitiques, en particulier des algues dasycladales, laissant de grande quantité de steinkerns micritiques, qui à leur tour ont été décomposés en péloides et petits intraclastes. Ces découvertes suggèrent qu'une large partie de ce système de vaste rampe plateforme était caractérisée par des prés subtidaux à dasycladales et crinoïdes. Enfin; la classification longtemps établie des carbonates a été réévaluée et une classification révisée des calcaires allochtones pour leur étude à l'affleurement et en laboratoire est proposée. Un intérêt partulier est porté sur les relations grains-matrices.

Sedimentological and ichnological characteristics of Dur At Tallah siliciclastic rock sequence, and their significance in the depositional environment interpretation of tidal-fluvial system (Upper Eocene, Sirt Basin, Libya)

Dur At Talah sedimentary sequence, located at the southern side of the Sirt Basin in central Libya, is composed of 150 m thick of mainly siliciclastic rocks. The importance of this sequence is linked to the importance of the Sirt Basin as one of large hydrocarbon reservoirs in Libya. The sequence is also an excellent site for vertebrate fossils of Late Eocene, the age of the sequence. Previous studies, though very limited compared to the importance of this area, are focused on its paleontological content. Sedimentology received only scant attention before this project. This thesis is an outcrop based study in which the focus is given to the sedimentary and biogenic (trace fossils) structures, aiming at defining and interpreting depositional facies which building up the sequence. The study is mainly based on field data which are analyzed on the light of related published literature and on the comparison with modern sedimentary environments. Results of facies analysis have led to splitting the entire sequence into three genetically related intervals. The oldest, we called the New Idam Unit (around 80m), is composed of very fine sandstones to mudstones. New Idam Unit is unconformably overlain by the Sarir Unit (around 50m), composed of medium grained cross bedded sandstones (the lower 25-30 m) changes up to very coarse and microconglomeratic sandstone (the upper 20-30 m). Thus, the Sarir Unit is split into the lower Sarir Subunit and upper Sarir subunit. The New Idam Unit presents both classical and unusual sedimentary and biogenic indicators that attribute this unit to estuarine depositional environment. It starts with outer estuarine (the lower 35 m) and ends up with inner estuarine (the upper 45 m). Maximum flooding surface is located in between. Above this surface the fluvial indicators increase and tidal indicators decrease, thus providing clue for basinward (North) migration of the shoreline. The lower Sarir subunit which was previously interpreted as fluvial deposits, preserves multi-scale sedimentary structures that undoubtedly belong to tidal processes. This is especially evidenced at the lower part of the lower Sarir Subunit (LLS). Fluvial indications over dominates the tidal ones in the upper part of the lower Sarir (ULS). Due to this configuration the whole lower Sarir subunit is interpreted as shallow marine, deltaic, depositional system, occurred during sea level ¨normal¨ regression. This time, maximum flooding surface is located between the LLS and ULS. The lower Sarir subunit is terminated by subaerial unconformity, with evidences of subaerial exposure preserved at the top of the ULS. These are intruded by the upper Sarir subunit which presents clear evidences of strictly fluvial environment of deposition. The deposits of the upper Sarir subunit record the low stand system tract part of the Dur At Talah sequence. In addition to the outlined results, the sequential pattern of the depositional events is suggested for the entire sequence of Dur At Talah. This study provides a valuable information regarding the depositional and sequential aspects of the Sirt Basin during the late Eocene, it also provide an unique case study for the better understanding of the shallow marine tidal deposits.

Estudo de relaÃÃes ecolÃgicas em planÃcies hipersalinas (apicum) do estado do Cearà / Ecologica relations in hypersaline tidal flats (apicum): a study based in Cearà state estuaries

CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / This study investigates ecological process and dynamic of the hypersaline tidal flats (HTF, locally knowns as âapicumâ). The HTF systems are characterized by flat landscape and hypersaline soil conditions that may occour in arid and semiarid regions of the world. Usually HTF can be found inside mangrove forest or as a transitional system between mangrove and dry land ecosystem. These areas are highly important for advances of mangrove forest in case of sea level increase. Besides, HTF have great economic value, as prioritarian areas to install aquaculture or saline ponds. Also it represents security zones for traditional populations, as artisanal fishermen. However, the ecological process which drives the HTFs systems remain poorly knew. The studies presented in this doctoral dissertation aim to fulfill some lacks of knowledge about ecological process that could drive the HTF dynamic. The chapter 1 is a bibliographical review about this system. On chapter 2 were evaluated possibles mechanisms used by plants in order to improve their survival in such stressed environment through the study of rhizosphere soils and comparison with bulk soils. On chapter 3, through an experimental study in the field, the possible effect of two crab species bioturbation on HTFs soils and it possible effects on soil properties were evaluated. The chapter 4 registered the evaluation of ecological interactions among biotic and abiotic fractions of the system using ecological modeling tools. In this sense, a structural ecological model was designed using microrelief elevation, soil properties, two plant species biomass and the covering areas of two crab species. Based on results obtained in these studies, it was possible to conclude that HTFs have a particular ecological dynamic and have close relation with mangrove forests due the nutrients, material and animal population flux shared by them. The plant community of HTFs areas is componed mainly by pioneersâ clonal halophytes species. These species seemed to have different strategies to deal with saline stress, an important limitant factor for their growing and distribution. The seasonal effects were noteworthy mainly in bulk soils. In this sense, it is possible that plant estabilize the environment in their benefit. The crabs were able to affect biogeochemical dynamic in HTF soils. However, the burrouing effects of crab species on soil properties were different and seemed reflect the species habit. Although bioturbation effects were important, the modifications on HTF soil properties were less evident than in mangrove forests. Environmental process related to salinity and nutrients availability are among the main factors to drive crabs distribution and plant growth in HTFs. These processes were dependent of microrelief variation. A combination of abiotic factors (microrelief elevation and soil properties) and positive relations among plant species seems to guide the ecological dynamics in HTFs systems. Conservation strategies of coastal environments areas must include the HTF protection due their importance for coastal environments on climate change scenario and economic importance, but mainly because their unique ecological characteristics. / Esse estudo teve como objetivo geral investigar processos ecolÃgicos e a dinÃmica do apicum. Esses sistemas se caracterizam por serem planÃcies hipersalinas que ocorrem em zonas costeiras de regiÃes Ãridas onde podem ser identificadas dentro de bosques de mangue ou entre o manguezal e ecossistemas de terra seca, como mata seca ou restinga. Os apicuns sÃo Ãreas estratÃgicas para recuo das florestas de mangue em caso de aumento do nÃvel do mar. AlÃm disso, possuem grande importÃncia econÃmica, visto que sÃo Ãreas preferenciais para instalaÃÃo de empreendimentos de aquicultura e salinas e por que representam zonas de seguranÃa para populaÃÃes tradicionais. Entretanto, muito pouco se sabe sobre os processos ecolÃgicos que regulam a dinÃmica do sistema. Os estudos compilados nessa tese visam de algum modo suprir lacunas sobre os processos ecolÃgicos que regem a dinÃmica desse sistema. O capÃtulo 1 traz uma ampla revisÃo bibliogrÃfica sobre esse sistema. No capÃtulo 2 foram avaliados possÃveis mecanismos utilizados pelas plantas para sobreviverem ao ambiente limitante atravÃs do estudo dos solos rizosfÃricos e comparaÃÃo com solos nÃo colonizados por plantas. No capÃtulo 3, atravÃs de um estudo experimental de campo foram avaliados os efeitos da bioturbaÃÃo de duas espÃcies de caranguejos nos solos de apicum e seus possÃveis efeitos sobre as condiÃÃes edÃficas. O capÃtulo 4 aprofunda-se na avaliaÃÃo das interaÃÃes ecolÃgicas que ocorrem entre o solo, microrelevo e a biota do sistema (plantas e animais). Nesse sentido, um modelo ecolÃgico estrutural foi construÃdo utilizando variaÃÃes na elevaÃÃo do relevo, propriedades do solo, biomassa das plantas e Ãrea de cobertura de caranguejos. Com base nos resultados, concluiu-se que o sistema apicum possui dinÃmica ecolÃgica muito prÃpria e possui uma relaÃÃo com os bosques de mangue graÃas ao compartilhamento de fluxos de matÃria, nutrientes e populaÃÃes de animais. A comunidade de plantas do apicum à composta, sobretudo por espÃcies clonais halÃfitas pioneiras e que parecem possuir estratÃgias diferenciadas para lidar com o estresse salino, fator limitante do seu crescimento e distribuiÃÃo. O efeito da sazonalidade à notÃvel, sobretudo nas Ãreas nÃo colonizadas por plantas, indicando que possivelmente as plantas estabilizam o sistema solo em seu beneficio. Diferentes espÃcies de caranguejos sÃo capazes de afetar a dinÃmica biogeoquÃmica do solo. A bioturbaÃÃo do solo pelas espÃcies estudadas provocou diferentes efeitos nas propriedades do solo, os quais parecem estar intimamente ligados as hÃbitos das espÃcies. Entretanto, as seus efeitos nos apicuns, embora importantes, sÃo menos intensos que em Ãreas de manguezais. Processos ambientais ligados à salinidade do solo e à disponibilidade de nutrientes estÃo entre os principais fatores que regem a distribuiÃÃo de caranguejos e crescimento das plantas nos apicuns. Esses processos sÃo intimamente dependentes das variaÃÃes do microrelevo. Uma combinaÃÃo entre fatores abiÃticos (elevaÃÃo do relevo e propiedades do solo) e relaÃÃes positivas entre espÃcies de plantas parecem se os princiapis agentes na dinÃmica ecolÃgica dos apicuns. EstratÃgias de conservaÃÃo de sistemas costeiros devem incluir a proteÃÃo dos apicuns visto seu importante papel ecolÃgico no cenÃrio de mudanÃas climÃticas e importÃncia para economia local, sobretudo por conta suas caracterÃsticas ecolÃgicas Ãnicas.

Para subsidiar a gestão deste recurso pesqueiro, este estudo objetivou gerar conhecimento sobre sua reprodução e recrutamento. As ocorrências das chamadas “andadas” reprodutivas foram registradas de 2006 a 2011, sendo que, em 2008 e 2010, a abundância e comportamento de U. cordatus foram monitorados. Um total de 1441 caranguejos foi observado, dos quais 80% exploravam tocas. Em torno de 90% dos caranguejos que estavam explorando tocas eram machos a procura de parceiras. Foram registrados 78 caranguejos escalando árvores, sendo 78% deles, fêmeas realizando extrusão de ovos. Estes movimentos foram utilizados para análise crítica de classificações unificadoras de movimento animal e concluiu-se que é ainda necessária uma nomenclatura que permita uma classificação sem ambiguidades e um agrupamento coerente de movimentos de diferentes taxa, de acordo com suas causas evolutivas. Foi constatado que as andadas podem ocorrer de dia e de noite e que o ritmo de procura de parceiros é ligado ao “ciclo de desigualdade de maré de sizígia”. Em sincronia com este ciclo, as andadas variaram entre lua cheia ou nova, dependendo de qual fase apresentava a maior amplitude de maré. A causa evolutiva mais provável da andada é permitir a maior sobrevivência das larvas através da liberação sincronizada com a maré de maior amplitude, um mês depois. Este conhecimento facilitará a determinação de períodos de defeso, reduzindo conflitos entre os coletores e o órgão gestor. Para estudar o recrutamento, juvenis foram amostrados mensalmente de Abril/08 a Maio/09. Dos 474 recrutas encontrados, 96% estavam associados a tocas de coespecíficos, indicando facilitação ecológica. O recrutamento foi maior em zonas intermediárias do gradiente ambiental, com altura de inundação estimada de 18,5 cm, evitando a alta predação das zonas mais inundadas e o estresse físico-químico das menos inundadas. Amostragens em outras 6 áreas, com diferentes padrões de zonação, também revelaram maior recrutamento em zonas de manguezal arbóreo menos inundadas, próximas à transição para terra-firme. Ressalta-se, portanto, a importância da conservação e da nomenclatura adequada desta zona de transição, sugerindo-se que esta seja definida tendo como critério a estrutura herbácea de sua vegetação e não medições de salinidade e inundação, que podem variar espaço-temporalmente e, portanto, serem subjetivas. O conhecimento sobre recrutamento habitat específico poderá indicar se ações de repovoamento são realmente necessárias para a recuperação de estoques de U. cordatus afetados por mortalidades em massa. / The land crab, Ucides cordatus, is a keystone species for the mangrove, has an important socioeconomic role and their stocks have been reduced by mass mortalities. To support the management of this fisheries resource, the aim of the study was produce knowledge about its reproduction and recruitment. The occurrences of the so-called reproductive andadas (= “walk” in Portuguese), were recorded from 2006 to 2011. In 2008 and 2010, the abundance and behaviour of U. cordatus were also monitored. A total of 1441 crabs were observed, 80% exploring burrows. About 90% of exploring crabs were males searching for mates. We recorded 78 crabs climbing on trees and 78% of them were females extruding eggs. We used these movements for the critical assessment of unifying animal movement classifications. We conclude that a nomenclature allowing an unambiguous classification and a coherent grouping of movements across different taxa, according to their ultimate causes is still lacking. We found that andada occurred during the day and night and that the rhythm of mate searching was linked to the “syzygy tide inequality cycle” (STIC). In sync with this cycle, andada shifted between new and full moon, depending upon which moon phase had the higher amplitude tides. The likely ultimate cause of andada is increased larval survival after synchronous release at highest amplitude spring tides one month later. This knowledge will support the establishment of capture bans and reduce conflicts between fishers and regulatory agencies. To study the recruitment, juveniles were sampled monthly from April 2008 to May 2009. Of the 474 recruits found, 96% were associated with burrows of conspecifics, indicating ecological facilitation. Recruitment was higher in intermediate zones of the environmental gradient, with 18.5 cm of estimated flood height, avoiding high predation at the most inundated zone and the physical-chemical stress at the less flooded zone. Sampling in other 6 areas, with different zonation patterns, also showed higher recruitment in intermediate zones of arboreous mangrove near the transition to hinterland. Therefore it was emphasized the importance of conservation and of a proper nomenclature of this transition zone. It is suggested that the transition zone must be defined based on the herbaceous structure of its vegetation rather than measurements of salinity and inundation, which can vary in space and time and therefore be subjective. Knowledge about habitat-specific recruitment could indicate whether stock enhancement actions are really necessary for the recovery of U. cordatus stocks affected by mass mortalities.
