Improving disk read performance through block-level replication into free space

Lifchits, Andrei 05 1900 (has links)
Disk performance for random access fares significantly worse compared to sequential access. Time required to transfer random blocks to or from disk is dominated by seeking and rotational delay. To improve the throughput and reduce the latency, one can apply techniques to increase the sequentiality of disk accesses, such as block rearrangement and replication. We introduce an approach to improve read performance by replicating blocks into file system free space at the block level. This makes the replication module independent of the file system and therefore easier to implement and verify. A solution that requires no changes to the file system is also easier to adopt. Supporting a new file system is a matter of writing a user-space component that understands its free block data structures. We implemented a prototype as a stacked device driver for Linux and evaluated its performance on a number of workloads. / Science, Faculty of / Computer Science, Department of / Graduate

Steiner systems of the Mathieu Group M₁₂

Dillard, Kristin Marie 01 January 2000 (has links)
A Steiner system T with parameters (5,6,12) is a collection of 6-element sets, called hexads, of a 12-element set [omega], such that any 5 of the 12 elements belong to exactly one hexad. In this project we construct a graph whose vertices are the orbits of S₁₂ on T x T, where T is the set of all Steiner systems S(5,6,12). Two vertices are joined if an orbit is taken into another under the action of a transposition. The number of hexads common to two Steiner systems are also given. We also prove that any two Steiner systems with parameters (5,6,12) can intersect only in 0, 12, 24, 36, or 60 hexads.

Micellar Self-Assembly of Block Copolymers for Fabrication of Nanostructured Membranes

Marques, Debora S. 11 1900 (has links)
This research work examines the process of block copolymer membrane fabrication by self-assembly combined by non-solvent induced phase separation. Self-assembly takes place from the preparation of the primordial solution until the moment of immersion in a non-solvent bath. These mechanisms are driven thermodynamically but are limited by kinetic factors. It is shown in this work how the ordering of the assembly of micelles is improved by the solution parameters such as solvent quality and concentration of block copolymer. Order transitions are detected, yielding changes in the morphology. The evaporation of the solvents after casting is demonstrated to be essential to reach optimum membrane structure. The non-solvent bath stops the phase separation at an optimum evaporation time.

Complete Heart Block in Association With Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever

Virk, Hafeez Ul Hassan, Inayat, Faisal, Ur Rahman, Zia 01 November 2016 (has links)
Dengue virus infection affects the heart structurally and functionally. Clinical manifestations of cardiac complications secondary to dengue virus infection vary from self-limiting arrhythmias to severe myocardial infarction, leading to hypotension, pulmonary edema, and cardiogenic shock. However, we report a case of dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) complicated by a complete heart block. A female with DHF due to dengue virus serotype 2, presented to the emergency department with fever, headache, rash, and fatigue followed by an episode of syncope. She was found to have a third-degree atrioventricular block, with pulseless polymorphic ventricular tachycardia. Patient was resuscitated and a temporary trans-venous pacemaker was placed. She reverted back to normal sinus rhythm after 4 days of syncope and was subsequently discharged from the hospital after complete resolution of symptoms, without the need for a permanent pacemaker. Physicians are warranted to have high index of suspicion for dengue virus infection as an etiology in patients with acute cardiovascular compromise, especially in tropical areas.
