When defining a structure to fulfill a set of axioms that are similar to those prescribed by Euclid, one must select a set of points and then define what is meant by a line and what is meant by a circle. When properly defined these labels will have properties which are similar to their counterparts in the (complex) plane, the lines and circles which Euclid undoubtedly had in mind. In this manner, the geometer may employ his intuition from the complex plane to prove theorems about other systems. Most "finite geometries" have clearly defined notions of points and lines but fail to define circles. The two notable exceptions are the circles in a finite affine plane and the circles in a Mobius plane. Using the geometry of Euclid as motivation, we strive to develop structures with both lines and circles. The only successful example other than the complex plane is the affine plane over a finite field, where all of Euclid's geometry holds except for any assertions involving order or continuity. To complement the prolific work concerning finite geometries and their lines, we provide a general definition of a circle, or more correctly, of a collection of circles and present some preliminary results concerning the construction of such structures. Our definition includes the circles of an affine plane over a finite field and the circles in a Mobius plane as special cases. We develop a necessary and sufficient condition for circularity, present computational techniques for determining circularity and give varying constructions. We devote a chapter to the use of circular designs in coding theory. It is proven that these structures are not useful in the theory of error-correcting codes, since more efficient codes are known, for example the Reed-Muller codes. However, the theory developed in the earlier chapters does have applications to Cryptology. We present five encryption methods utilizing circular structures.

Space-time block coding for wireless communications

Wireless designers constantly seek to improve the spectrum efficiency/capacity, coverage of wireless networks, and link reliability. Space-time wireless technology that uses multiple antennas along with appropriate signalling and receiver techniques offers a powerful tool for improving wireless performance. Some aspects of this technology have already been incorporated into various wireless network and cellular mobile standards. More advanced MIMO techniques are planned for future mobile networks, wireless local area network (LANs) and wide area network (WANs). Multiple antennas when used with appropriate space-time coding (STC) techniques can achieve huge performance gains in multipath fading wireless links. The fundamentals of space-time coding were established in the context of space-time Trellis coding by Tarokh, Seshadri and Calderbank. Alamouti then proposed a simple transmit diversity coding scheme and based on this scheme, general space-time block codes were further introduced by Tarokh, Jafarkhani and Calderbank. Since then space-time coding has soon evolved into a most vibrant research area in wireless communications. Recently, space-time block coding has been adopted in the third generation mobile communication standard which aims to deliver true multimedia capability. Space-time block codes have a most attractive feature of the linear decoding/detection algorithms and thus become the most popular among different STC techniques. The decoding of space-time block codes, however, requires knowledge of channels at the receiver and in most publications, channel parameters are assumed known, which is not practical due to the changing channel conditions in real communication systems. This thesis is mainly concerned with space-time block codes and their performances. The focus is on signal detection and channel estimation for wireless communication systems using space-time block codes. We first present the required background materials, discuss different implementations of space-time block codes using different numbers of transmit and receive antennas, and evaluate the performances of space-time block codes using binary phase-shift keying (BPSK), quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK), and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Then, we investigate Tarokh’s joint detection scheme with no channel state information thoroughly, and also propose a new general joint channel estimation and data detection scheme that works with QPSK and 16-QAM and different numbers of antennas. Next, we further study Yang’s channel estimation scheme, and expand this channel estimation scheme to work with 16-QAM modulation. After dealing with complex signal constellations, we subsequently develop the equations and algorithms of both channel estimation schemes to further test their performances when real signals are used (BPSK modulation). Then, we simulate and compare the performances of the two new channel estimation schemes when employing different number of transmit and receive antennas and when employing different modulation methods. Finally, conclusions are drawn and further research areas are discussed.

Microfluidic synthesis of block copolymer nanoparticles for drug delivery

In this dissertation, we studied two-phase microfluidics as a platform for the controlled synthesis of drug delivery polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs). The block copolymer we studied was poly(ε-caprolactone)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) (PCL-b-PEO). The anticancer drug we studied was paclitaxel (PAX). First, we explored microfluidic control of nanoparticle structure (size, morphology, and core crystallinity) on PCL-b-PEO PNPs without loaded PAX. We demonstrated the reproducible variability of PCL-b-PEO nanoparticle size and morphology. Microfluidic control of nanoparticle size and morphology was found to arise from the interplay of flow-induced particle coalescence and breakup. Next, we demonstrated the linear dependence of PCL core crystallization on flow-rate. We attributed this dependence of PCL core crystallization on flow-induced crystallization. We then used our microfluidic device to control PAX-loaded PNP structure and function (small molecule loading efficiency, diffusional release kinetics, and cytotoxicity). At low drug loading ratios (r < 0.1), we demonstrated reproducible variability of PAX-loaded PNP size and morphology. With increasing flow rate we were able to manufacture PNPs of high aggregation number. We were also able to reproducibly demonstrate the linear dependence of PCL core crystallinity on flow rate. Furthermore, PAX loading efficiency was dependent on PNP size and morphology. Formulations which consisted of cylindrical and lamellar type morphologies typically had higher PAX loading efficiencies, than formulations which consisted of spherical structures. Next, we studied diffusional PAX release, increasing core crystallinity correlated with slowing diffusional PAX release kinetics. At high drug loading ratios (r > 0.1), we demonstrated reproducible control of PAX-loaded PNP structure and function. PCL core crystallinity was a major factor influencing PNP size and morphology. Samples with high core crystallinity formed PNP structures with low internal curvature. Furthermore, core crystallization had a large influence on PAX loading efficiency; as samples with high PAX loading efficiency correlated with low PCL core crystallinity. With respect to diffusional PAX release, we found that increasing PCL core crystallinity correlated with slowing diffusional PAX release kinetics. Next, we studied the cytotoxicity of our PAX-loaded PNPs using the MCF-7 cancer cell line. Due to the complex nature of the interactions between our PAX-loaded PNPs and the cancer cells, we were not able to elucidate the exact influence of flow rate on PNP cytotoxicity. / Graduate

I föreliggande studie undersöktes eventuella skillnader mellan de politiska blocken i valen mellan år 1988 och 2014. Valmanifesten från de nuvarande riksdagspartierna exklusive Sverigedemokraterna kodades i enlighet med en innehållsanalys och problematiserades utifrån teorier från Chantal Mouffe och Jürgen Habermas. Från Mouffe användes teorin om den så kallade konsensuspolitiken och från Habermas teorin om det kommunikativa handlandet. Författarna ville med teorierna dels se om blocken genom konsensus närmat sig varandra, dels resonera kring om detta har skett i en anda av förståelse och samförstånd utmynnande i överrensstämmelse blocken emellan.Teorierna användes som problematiseringsverktyg på de tio kategorier som av författarna fastställdes, utifrån vilka frågor som dominerade valmanifesten. Studien visar att det mellan 1988 och 2014 fanns en mätbar skillnad blocken emellan, det vill säga, blocken hade blivit mer lika och därmed vad de undersökta sakfrågorna beträffar, mer homogena.

Control of structure and function of block copolymer nanoparticles manufactured in microfluidic reactors: towards drug delivery applications

This thesis includes three studies on related aspects of structure and function control for drug delivery block copolymer nanoparticles manufactured in segmented gas-liquid microfluidic reactors. First, the self-assembly of a series of photoresponsive poly(o-nitrobenzyl acrylate)-b-polydimethylacrylamide copolymers is conducted in the gas-liquid segmented microfluidic reactor at various flow rates. The resulting morphologies are found to be flow-variable and distinct from nanoparticles prepared off-chip by dropwise water addition. Photocleaving of the nanoparticles formed at different flow rates reveal flow-variable photodissociation kinetics. Next, we conduct a direct comparison between a commercially-available single-phase microfluidic mixer and the two-phase, gas-liquid segmented microfluidic reactor used in our group, with respect to nanoparticle formation from a typical block copolymer identified for drug delivery applications, polycaprolactone-b-poly(ethylene oxide). The two-phase chip yields morphologies and core crystallinities that vary with flow rate; however, the same parameters are found to be flow-independent using the single-phase mixer. This study provides the first direct evidence that flow-variable structure control is a unique feature of the two-phase chip design. Finally, we investigate structure and function control for paclitaxel (PAX)-loaded nanoparticles prepared from a series of poly(6-methyl caprolactone-co-ε-caprolactone)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) copolymers with variable 6-methyl caprolactone (MCL) content. For all MCL-containing copolymers, off-chip preparations form nanoparticles with no measurable crystallinity, although PAX loading levels are higher and release rates are slower compared to the copolymer without MCL. Both off-chip and on-chip preparations yield amorphous spheres of similar size from MCL-containing copolymers, although on-chip nanoparticles showed slower release rates, attributed to more homogeneous PAX distribution due to faster mixing. / Graduate
