Outage Capacity and Code Design for Dying ChannelsZeng, Meng 2011 August 1900 (has links)
In wireless networks,
communication links may be subject to random fatal impacts: for example, sensor networks under sudden power losses or cognitive radio networks with unpredictable primary user spectrum occupancy. Under such circumstances, it is critical to quantify how fast and reliably the information can be collected over attacked links. For a single point-to-point channel subject to a random attack, named as a dying channel, we model it as a block-fading (BF) channel with a finite and random channel length. First, we study the outage probability when the coding length K is fixed and uniform power allocation is assumed. Furthermore, we discuss the optimization over K and the power allocation vector PK to minimize the outage probability. In addition, we extend the single point to-point dying channel case to the parallel multi-channel case where each sub-channel is a dying channel, and investigate the corresponding asymptotic behavior of the overall outage probability with two different attack models: the independent-attack case and the m-dependent-attack case. It can be shown that the overall outage probability diminishes to zero for both cases as the number of sub-channels increases if the rate per unit cost is less than a certain threshold. The outage exponents are also studied to reveal how fast the outage probability improves over the number of sub-channels.
Besides the information-theoretical results, we also study a practical coding scheme for the dying binary erasure channel (DBEC), which is a binary erasure channel (BEC) subject to a random fatal failure. We consider the rateless codes and optimize the degree distribution to maximize the average recovery probability. In particular, we first study the upper bound of the average recovery probability, based on which we define the objective function as the gap between the upper bound and the average recovery probability achieved by a particular degree distribution. We then seek the optimal degree distribution by minimizing the objective function. A simple and heuristic approach is also proposed to provide a suboptimal but good degree distribution.

A Comparison Of Time-switched Transmit Diversity And Space-time Coded Systems Over Time-varying Miso ChannelsKoken, Erman 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents a comparison between two transmit diversity schemes, namely space-time coding and time-switched transmit diversity (TSTD) over block-fading and time-varying multi-input single-output (MISO) channels with different channel parameters. The schemes are concatenated with outer channel codes in order to achieve spatio-temporal diversity. The analytical results are derived for the error performances of the systems and the simulation results as well as outage probabilities are provided. Besides, the details of the pilot-symbol-aided modulation (PSAM) technique are investigated and the error performances of the systems are analyzed when the channel state information is estimated with PSAM. It is demonstrated using the analytical and simulation results that TSTD have a comparable error performance with the space-time coding techniques and it even outperforms the space-time codes for some channel parameters. Our results indicate that TSTD can be suggested as an alternative to space-time codes in some time-varying channels especially due to the implementation simplicity.

Near Capacity Operating Practical Transceivers For Wireless Fading ChannelsGuvensen, Gokhan Muzaffer 01 February 2009 (has links) (PDF)
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems have received much attention due to their
multiplexing and diversity capabilities. It is possible to obtain remarkable improvement
in spectral efficiency for wireless systems by using MIMO based schemes. However, sophisticated
equalization and decoding structures are required for reliable communication at
high rates. In this thesis, capacity achieving practical transceiver structures are proposed for
MIMO wireless channels depending on the availability of channel state information at the
transmitter (CSIT).
First, an adaptive MIMO scheme based on the use of quantized CSIT and reduced precoding
idea is proposed. With the help of a very tight analytical upper bound obtained for limited
rate feedback (LRF) MIMO capacity, it is possible to construct an adaptive scheme varying
the number of beamformers used according to the average SNR value. It is shown that
this strategy always results in a significantly higher achievable rate than that of the schemes
which does not use CSIT, if the number of transmit antennas is greater than that of receive
antennas.
Secondly, it is known that the use of CSIT does not bring significant improvement over
capacity, when similar number of transmit and receive antennas are used / on the other hand,
it reduces the complexity of demodulation at the receiver by converting the channel into noninterfering
subchannels. However, it is shown in this thesis that it is still possible to achieve
a performance very close to the outage probability and exploit the space-frequency diversity
benefits of the wireless fading channel without compromising the receiver complexity, even
if the CSIT is not used. The proposed receiver structure is based on iterative forward and
backward filtering to suppress the interference both in time and space followed by a spacetime
decoder. The rotation of multidimensional constellations for block fading channels and
the single-carrier frequency domain equalization (SC-FDE) technique for wideband MIMO
channels are studied as example applications.

Achievable Coding Rates For Awgn And Block Fading Channels In The Finite Blocklength RegimeVural, Mehmet 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In practice, a communication system works with finite blocklength codes because of the delay constraints and the information-theoretic bounds which are proposed for finite blocklength systems can be exploited to determine the performance of a designed system. In this thesis, achievable rates for given average error probabilities are considered for finite blocklength systems. Although classical bounds can be used to upper bound the error probability, these bounds require the optimization of auxiliary variables. In this work, a bound which is called the dependence testing (DT) bound that is free of any auxiliary variables is exploited. The DT bound is evaluated by introducing a normal approximation to the information density. Simulations carried out both for the Gaussian and discrete input alphabets show the proposed approximation enables very good prediction of the achievable rates. The proposed approximation is also used to calculate the average error probability for block fading channels. Simulations performed for Rayleigh block fading channels demonstrate that the total blocklength of the system in addition to the number of fading blocks should be accounted for especially when the number of fading blocks is large. A power allocation problem in block fading channels when the channel state information is available to the transmitting side is investigated in the final part of this work. The DT bound is optimized for a given channel state vector by allocating different power levels to each fading block by exploiting short-term power allocation. A simple power allocation algorithm is proposed which comes out with very similar results compared with the analytically computed values.

MIMO block-fading channels with mismatched CSIAsyhari, A.Taufiq, Guillen i Fabregas, A. 23 August 2014 (has links)
Yes / We study transmission over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) block-fading channels with
imperfect channel state information (CSI) at both the transmitter and receiver. Specifically, based on
mismatched decoding theory for a fixed channel realization, we investigate the largest achievable rates
with independent and identically distributed inputs and a nearest neighbor decoder. We then study the
corresponding information outage probability in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime and analyze
the interplay between estimation error variances at the transmitter and at the receiver to determine
the optimal outage exponent, defined as the high-SNR slope of the outage probability plotted in a
logarithmic-logarithmic scale against the SNR. We demonstrate that despite operating with imperfect
CSI, power adaptation can offer substantial gains in terms of outage exponent. / A. T. Adaptive transmission for block-fading channelsNguyen, Dang Khoa January 2010 (has links)
Multipath propagation and mobility in wireless communication systems give rise to variations in the amplitude and phase of the transmitted signal, commonly referred to as fading. Many wireless applications are affected by slowly varying fading, where the channel is non-ergodic, leading to non-reliable transmission during bad channel realizations. These communication scenarios are well modeled by the block-fading channel, where the reliability is quantatively characterized by the outage probability. This thesis focuses on the analysis and design of adaptive transmission schemes to improve the outage performance of both single- and multiple-antenna transmission over the block-fading channel, especially for the cases where discrete input constellations are used. Firstly, a new lower bound on the outage probability of non-adaptive transmission is proposed, providing an efficient tool for evaluating the performance of non-adaptive transmission. The lower bound, together with its asymptotic analysis, is essential for efficiently designing the adaptive transmission schemes considered in the thesis. Secondly, new power allocation rules are derived to minimize the outage probability of fixed-rate transmission over block-fading channels. Asymptotic outage analysis for the resulting schemes is performed, revealing important system design criteria. Furthermore, the thesis proposes novel suboptimal power allocation rules, which enjoy low-complexity while suffering minimal losses as compared to the optimal solution. Thus, these schemes facilitate power adaptation in low-cost devices. Thirdly, the thesis considers incremental-redundancy automatic-repeat-request (INR-ARQ) strategies, which perform adaptive transmission based on receiver feedback. In particular, the thesis concentrates on multi-bit feedback, which has been shown to yield significant gains in performance compared to conventional single-bit ARQ schemes. The thesis proposes a new information-theoretic framework for multi-bit feedback INR-ARQ, whereby the receiver feeds back a quantized version of the accumulated mutual information. Within this framework, the thesis presents an asymptotic analysis which yields the large gains in outage performance offered by multi-bit feedback. Furthermore, the thesis proposes practical design rules, which further illustrates the benefits of multi-bit feedback in INR-ARQ systems. In short, the thesis studies the outage performance of transmission over block-fading channels. Outage analysis is performed for non-adaptive and adaptive transmission. Improvements for the existing adaptive schemes are also proposed, leading to either lower complexity requirements or better outage performance. Still, further research is needed to bring the benefits offered by adaptive transmission into practical systems. / Thesis (PhD)--University of South Australia, 2010

Single and multi-antenna MC-DS-CDMA with joint detection for broadband block-fading channelsBasilio, Daniel Jorge 23 August 2010 (has links)
In the context of broadband wireless communications using code division multiple access (CDMA), the main multiple access (MA) options include single-carrier direct sequence CDMA (SC-DS-CDMA) using time-domain direct sequence spreading [1, p. 728], multicarrier CDMA (MC-CDMA) using frequency-domain spreading [2, 3] and multicarrier DS-CDMA (MC-DS-CDMA) using time-domain direct sequence spreading of the individual sub-carrier signals [4, 5]. It was shown in [6] that MC-DS-CDMA has the highest degrees of freedom in the family of CDMA schemes that can be beneficially exploited during the system design and reconfiguration procedures. An amalgam of MC-CDMA and MC-DS-CDMA known as time and frequency domain spreading (TF-domain spreading) MC-DS-CDMA was proposed in [6]. TF-domain spreading MC-DS-CDMA has several benefits over conventional MC-DS-CDMA with regard to both capacity and performance [7]. However, in contrast to conventional MC-DS-CDMA, TF-domain spreading MC-DS-CDMA introduces MUI, which necessitates the use of joint detection at the receiver. Recently, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) or multi-antenna TF-domain spreading MC-DS-CDMA schemes have been proposed in the literature that e ciently exploit both the spatial and frequency diversity available in MIMO frequency-selective channels [8, 9]. Although an extensive amount of research has been done on single and multi-antenna TF-domain spreading MC-DS-CDMA schemes that achieve both spatial and frequency diversity in frequency-selective slow fading channels [6–9], very little research considers the time-selectivity of the wireless channels encountered. Thus, the above-mentioned schemes may not be su ciently e cient, when communicating over wireless channels exhibiting both frequency-selective and time-selective fading. There are very few MC-DS-CDMA schemes in the literature that consider the time-selectivity of the wireless channels encountered. This study considers the design of single and multi-antenna TF-domain spreading MC-DS-CDMA, for frequency-selective block-fading channels, which are capable of exploiting the full diversity available in the channel (i.e. spatial, frequency and temporal diversity), using various methods of joint detection at the receiver. It has been shown that the diversity gain in block-fading channels can be improved by coding across multiple fading blocks [10–12]. Single-antenna TF-domain spreading MC-DS-CDMA is considered for the quasi-synchronous uplink channel, and multi-antenna TF-domain spreading MC-DS-CDMA is considered for the synchronous downlink channel. Numerous simulated bit error rate (BER) performance curves, obtained using a triply selective MIMO channel platform, are presented in this study using optimal and sub-optimal joint detection algorithms at the receiver. In addition, this study investigates the impact of spatial correlation on the BER performance of the MC-DS-CDMA schemes considered. From these simulated results, one is able to conclude that TF-domain spreading MC-DS-CDMA designed for frequency-selective block-fading channels performs better than previously proposed schemes designed for frequency-selective slow fading channels, owing to the additional temporal diversity exploited under the block-fading assumption.
