Traduire sans trop trahir. : Traduire un texte théorique sur la traduction avec la cohésion principale comme stratégie principale de traduction. / Translating without betraying. : Translating a theoretical text about translation, using the strengthening of cohesive links as the principal strategy of translation.

Annani, Stella January 2016 (has links)
Translating without betraying. Translating a theoretical text about translation, using the strengthening of cohesive links as the principal strategy of translation.   The aim of this study was to examine some aspects of the translation of a theoretical text on translation, written in French. In order to do that I started off by translating a passage of the book Introduction à la traductologie. Penser la traduction: hier, aujourd’hui, demain by Mathieu Guidère (2010). The book is intended for students and others interested in translation and translation studies. The theoretical framework of this study makes references to, among others, Blum-Kulka (1986) and to Vermeer (2012) and the skopos theory. As Guidère has a pedagogical aim with his book, it is particularly relevant to pay a special attention to the function of the text while translating. In several cases the source text proved to be both ambiguous and unclear. The skopos theory claims that the function of the target text should be at the center of the translator’s interest. The fact that the translation process requires an interpretation by the translator in the mediation of the message to be transmitted brings, according to Blum-Kulka (1986), about a text that is more redundant than the source text. This redundancy results in a higher level of cohesive explicitness that strengthens the textual cohesion. For this, Blum-Kulka (ibid) suggests that explicitness and greater cohesion can be seen as forming a general strategy in translation. To achieve a greater level of cohesion in the target text and to make it easier to read, I used some translation procedures, namely explicitness, simplification, reference and lexical cohesion (cf. Blum-Kulka 1986, Mauranen & Kujamäki 2004 and Halliday & Hassan 1976). I hope to have shown that these procedures were appropriate for the translation of this source text but also for the function of the target text. At the same time it turned out that these categories were in no way waterproof – on the contrary – many times they actually overlapped. I also found passages where textual coherence could not be achieved through translation strategies. In those cases, the translator faces the choice of either transmitting the inconsistency of the source text by translating them, or leaving the field of translation and rewriting the text. I opted for staying in the field of translation. The analysis of my own translation is of course a translation commentary rather than a scientific research. To really conduct a thorough research on translation procedures related to the function of the target text, you would have to analyze texts from other translators in order to have a more objective study object.

Blum Blum Shub on the GPU

Olsson, Mikael, Gullberg, Niklas January 2012 (has links)
Context. The cryptographically secure pseudo-random number generator Blum Blum Shub (BBS) is a simple algorithm with a strong security proof, however it requires very large numbers to be secure, which makes it computationally heavy. The Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a common vector processor originally dedicated to computer-game graphics, but has since been adapted to perform general-purpose computing. The GPU has a large potential for fast general-purpose parallel computing but due to its architecture it is difficult to adapt certain algorithms to utilise the full computational power of the GPU. Objectives. The objective of this thesis was to investigate if an implementation of the BBS pseudo-random number generator algorithm on the GPU would be faster than a CPU implementation. Methods. In this thesis, we modelled the performance of a multi-precision number system with different data types; to decide which data type should be used for a multi-precision number system implementation on the GPU. The multi-precision number system design was based on a positional number system. Because multi-precision numbers were used, conventional methods for arithmetic were not efficient or practical. Therefore, addition was performed by using Lazy Addition that allows larger carry values in order to limit the amount of carry propagation required to perform addition. Carry propagation was done by using a technique derived from a Kogge-Stone carry look-ahead adder. Single-precision multiplication was done using Dekker splits and multi-precision modular multiplication used Montgomery multiplication. Results. Our results showed that using the floating-point data type would yield greater performance for a multi-precision number system on the GPU compared to using the integer data type. The performance results from our GPU bound BBS implementation was about 4 times slower than a CPU version implemented with the GNU Multiple Precision Arithmetic Library (GMP). Conclusions. The conclusion made from this thesis, is that our GPU bound BBS implementation, is not a suitable alternative or replacement for the CPU bound implementation.

"Wat die hart van vol is", uit Steenbok tot Poolsee van Peter Blum : gedigsiklus of gedigreeks?

Van den Bergh, Anna Eleonora Debora 27 August 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Afrikaans) / In literature it is a common occurrence that certain poems are presented as a group, because certain joining forces indicate that these poems should not be treated as isolated entities. Two such classifications for the indexing of collective groups of poems are the cycle and the series. This study examines "Wat die hart van vol is", a collection of poems by Peter Blum in Steenbok tot Poolsee, to determine whether it is a cycle of poems or a series of poems. In a cycle the poems are constructed in such a way that the constituting elements (symbols, imagery, motifs and themes) form a structure which is simultaneously "horizontal" and "vertical", presented by a parabole whereby a spiral is incorporated in a chronology which is utilizing time and space in a rigid rranner by which the epic elements culminate in an all-encompassing theme. In this way the cycle progresses to a stage where it proves itself to be (back) at a (new) beginning at the point of its conclusion. The series is a group of poems which is constructed along a "horizontal" line. Unlike the cycle, it does not have the same underlying time-space chronology and interaction between the constituting elements because of its loose construction and the interchangeability of its poems. In the case of the series there cannot be an extention of the central theme or a deepening of the various layers of interpretation. At its utmost it can claim a "general incorporating" theme. In the analysis of the poems of "Wat die hart van vol is" it is proved that this group of poems is a cycle of poems and not of poems, and in the process the fact is established that a series of poems in its turn is an entity on its own with its own individual characteristics.
