"Gewalt gegen Gerechtigkeit" : reality and morality in Heinrich Böll's Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum

Manicke, Michelle Elizabeth 01 January 1988 (has links)
Heinrich Boll is West Germany's most controversial author of the post-war period, and Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum is probably his most widely contested work. Readers and literary critics alike have generally misunderstood or only partially understood Boll's purpose in writing this Erzahlung . Many have discounted it as the author's personal revenge against press and police for their mutual attacks on his honor. Others have panned it for its "poor German" and its lack of realism. Such reviews tend to examine only selected formal and thematic aspects of Katharina Blum. In order to fully comprehend any of Boll's works, however, one must adopt a synthetic approach; i.e., one must scrutinize and synthesize all major factors which influenced the composition of the narrative. The author's own background and philosophy, the socio-political realities of the Federal Republic of Germany, and the influence of literary tradition are key elements in the interpretation of Katharina Blum.

Die „provinzielle“ Olmützer Opernbühne und Wien

Křupková, Lenka 25 August 2017 (has links)

Passive and Active Strategies for Vibration Control of Lightly Damped Structures

Paknejad Seyedahmadian, Ahmad 18 June 2021 (has links) (PDF)
Lightweight designs in engineering applications give rise to flexible structures with extremely low internal damping. Vibrations of these flexible structures due to an unwanted excitation of system resonances may lead to high cycle fatigue failure and noise propagation. A common method to suppress the vibrations is to increase the damping of the system using one of the classical control techniques i.e. passive, active, and/or hybrid. Passive techniques are those control systems that are simply integrated into the structures with no need of external power source for their operations, like viscoelastic damping, piezoelectric and electromagnetic shunt damping, tuned mass damper, etc. However, the control performance of these systems, in terms of the damping ratio and the robustness to uncertainties, is highly limited to the system properties. For example, viscoelastic damping may not perform well at low frequencies and the performance of shunt damping is dependent on the electromechanical coupling between the structure and the transducer. To overcome the limitations associated with passive controls, it has been proposed to use active control systems, which are less sensitive to the system's parameters, to improve the control performance. It requires an integration of sensors and actuators with a feedback loop containing control laws. However, the high requirement of the external power source is not favorable for engineering applications where energy efficiency is the key parameter. The combination of active and passive strategies, known as hybrid control systems, can provide a fail-safe configuration with a high control performance and low power consumption. The price to pay for such configurations is the complexity of the design. This doctoral thesis first investigates the conceptual designs of all kinds of classical control systems for a simplified mechanical system. They include 1) the passive shunt using an electromagnetic transducer, 2) the active control system using positive and negative feedback, and 3) the hybrid electromagnetic shunt damper using both an active voltage source as well as an active current source. The next part of this thesis is focused on bladed structures as real-life applications which highly require vibration control due to their low internal damping. Because of practical reasons, piezoelectric transducers are used for the application of control systems. The finite element model of the structure is made first without piezoelectric patches to optimize the best locations of piezoelectric patches. Then, the model is updated with the piezoelectric patches to numerically simulate different control strategies. The experiments are performed to validate the numerical designs.

This dissertation presents a quantum permanent compromise attack to the Blum-Micali pseudorandom generator. The security of this generator, classified as cryptographically secure, is based on the hypothesis of intractability of the discrete logarithm problem in Classical Computing. The proposed attack is based on the quantum search algorithm jointly with the quantum discrete logarithm procedure and aims to compromise the unpredictability of the referred generator, recovering all of its past and future outputs. This work also describes generalizations that enables attacks to generators from the Blum-Micali construction and also to generators with multiple hard-core predicates. Such generalizations also allow attacks when the adversary intercepts non-consecutive bits or when there are less bits than required. Compared to its classical counterpart, the proposed algorithm has a quadractic speedup regarding the retrieval of the representant of the generator’s internal state followed by a super polynomial speedup regarding the obtention of the entire generator’sinternalstate. These results represent menaces of the Quantum Computing paradigm against the security of pseudorandom generators adopted in many real-world cryptosystems.

Lesser Evil : A case evaluation on operational level

Fabian, Cornils January 2021 (has links)
In war military necessity to some extent justifies breaches to some international humanitarian law rules. However, there is no justifiable causes for breaching rules with the objective to reduce humanitarian suffering. Professor Gabriella Blum is the creator of the humanitarian necessity theory which investigates the possibility for humanitarian necessity as a ground for freedom from responsibility in armed conflicts. By applying the humanitarian necessity theory to the Moscow Theater Hostage Crisis case this thesis strives to investigate how a humanitarian necessity theory would affect international humanitarian law on an operational level of war. The result of the analysis shows that the theory would weaken existing international humanitarian law and have high risks of blurring the limits between legitimate targets and protected persons. The implementation of the theory could result in creating an even more complex environment where the humanitarian necessity theory causes negative humanitarian effects instead of decreasing humanitarian suffering.

Russ, Tyler Robert 01 January 2010 (has links)
In his 1974 novella The lost Honor of Katharina Blum Heinrich Böll argues for the constitutional guarantee of presumption of innocence. He states that this principle is violated when defamatory media headlines make unwarranted accusations against a private citizen destroying their reputation as part of a targeted smear campaign. The novella characterizes such intentional campaigns as both criminalizing and dehumanizing. Böll argues that the government should influence the press to conform to the limits implied in the institution of freedom of press. He shows the helplessness of a private citizen under attack from a smear campaign when the government takes a laissez-faire attitude toward sensationalized media. This thesis, "Neither citizen nor human: Prisoner of the media and the state: systematically linked dehumanization and radicalization: Two Interpretations of Heinrich Böll's: The Lost Honor of Katharina Blum," evaluates the sympathetic role that media and government play in the radicalization of the private citizen. This thesis establishes a direct relation between smear campaigns and radical or extremist behavior. This thesis shows that the victim of the media acts out erratically in a state of panic and terror brought on by feelings of helplessness. This thesis supports Boell's position that this erratic behavior leads to suicide or violence against perceived oppressors or others. This thesis argues for the habitualization of violence as a precise definition of the radicalization of the individual to violence. This thesis utilizes Böll's fictionalized account of Katharina Blum. This thesis makes comparisons between targeted smear campaigns in the BRD in the period 1967-1974, roughly the period of the Brandt Administration, and the case of Katharina Blum. This thesis demonstrates the systematically linked oppression of oppositional voices by the West German government with media-driven smear campaigns. Böll's essays on topics including human rights and the potential benefits of political radicals help inform this study. Böll's novella demonstrates the vulnerability of all citizens to victimization of the press. Boell shows that violent radical behavior results from smear campaigns against private citizens. Boell argues that this radicalization is clearly rooted in a sales-driven media sympathetic to the state's abuses of power.

Not available

Piezoelectric shunt damping of rotationally periodic structures

Mokrani, Bilal 16 January 2015 (has links)
New materials and new fabrication techniques in turbomachinery lead to monolithic
structures with extremely low damping which may be responsible for severe vibrations
and possible high-cycle fatigue problems. To solve this, various techniques
of damping enhancement are under investigation. The present work is focused on
piezoelectric shunt damping.
This thesis considers the RL shunt damping of rotationally periodic structures using
an array of piezoelectric patches, with an application to a bladed drum representative
of those used in turbomachinery. Due to the periodicity and the cyclic symmetry of
the structure, the blade modes occur by families with very close resonance frequencies,
and harmonic shape in the circumferential direction; the proposed RL shunt
approaches take advantage of these two features.
When a family of modes is targeted for damping, the piezoelectric patches are
shunted independently on identical RL circuits, and tuned roughly on the average
value of the resonance frequencies of the targeted modes. This independent
configuration offers a damping solution effective on the whole family of modes, but
it requires the use of synthetic inductors, which is a serious drawback for rotating
machines.
When a specific mode with n nodal diameters has been identified as critical and
is targeted for damping, one can take advantage of its harmonic shape to organize
the piezoelectric patches in two parallel loops. This parallel approach reduces considerably
the demand on the inductors of the tuned inductive shunt, as compared
to independent loops, and offers a practical solution for a fully passive integration
of the inductive shunt in a rotating structure.
Various methods are investigated numerically and experimentally on a cantilever
beam, a bladed rail, a circular plate, and a bladed drum. The influence of blade
mistuning is also investigated.
