Rodriguez, Edgar Fernando Cortés January 2014 (has links)
Orientadora: Profa. Dra. / This work shows the efficiency analysis of sugar cane bagasse boilers, analyzed through the first and second law of thermodynamics. The calculation methodology for the first law applies the losses method, based in the Efficiency Energy Balance Method established in the most recent standards ASME PTC 4-2008 and EN 12952-15:2003. The efficiency analysis through the second law is made taking into account the information obtained from the analysis of the first law. Experimental data are obtained and presented, of some Brazilian manufacturing boilers installed in industrial plants in the State of São Paulo. The heat losses calculation through the walls of the boiler is presented in detail and compared with a previous calculation method, recommended in the standard: ASME PTC 4.1-1975. Moreover, the calculation of the uncertainty of the efficiency determination made is presented and discussed. On the basis of the results obtained, the main causes of heat loss are identified, and suggestions are made to improve the efficiency.

Investigation into ash related issues during co-combustion of coal and biomass: Development of a co-firing advisory tool

Arun Kumar Doshi, Veena A Doshi January 2007 (has links)
The co-firing technology of coal with biomass has been implemented to enhance the usage of biomass in power generation, thus reducing the release of greenhouse gas emissions. This study deals with the fireside issues, namely ash-related issues that arise during co-combustion of coal and biomass takes place. Ash release from biomass can lead to ash deposition problems such as fouling and slagging on surfacesof power generation boilers. The scope of this work includes the development of a conceptual model that predicts the ash release behaviour and chemical composition of inorganics in coal and biomass when combusted. An advanced analytical method was developed and introduced in this work to determine the speciation of biomass. The method known as pH extraction analysis was used to determine the inorganic speciation in three biomass samples, namely wood chips, wood bark and straw. The speciation of biomass and coal was used as an input to the model to predict the behaviour and release of ash. It was found that the main gas phases during the combustion of biomass are KCl, NaCl, K2SO4 and Na2SO4. Gas-to-particle formation calculations were carried out to determine the chemical composition of coal andbiomass when cooling takes place in the boiler. The results obtained in this work can be used in future work to determine the ash deposition of coal and biomass in boilers.

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses

Chen, Qiang 29 August 2005 (has links)
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied.

Ersättning av fossilt bränsle i värmeproduktion: Pulverbrännare till befintliga oljepannor / Replacement of fossil fuels in heat production: Powder burner to existing oil boilers

Bengtsson, Conny January 2013 (has links)
We are facing a change, to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels in favor of increased use of renewable energy. Incentives in the form of increased excise taxes on fossil fuels for companies accelerate the conversion to renewable energy or energy efficiency of its production. The consequence is a progressively more expensive cost for district heating with fuel oil to manufacturing industry. Excise tax on fuel oil rises by 41 percent, from 2010 to 2015 for those companies. To convert existing oil boilers with woodpowderburner is a solution to keep production costs down and remain competitive. In this thesis studied the possibility of converting oil boilers in the size range of 5 to 10 MW. The study takes a holistic approach to RMT's district heating to search the answer, if it is possible to do a conversion from a technical, sustainability and economic perspective. The felt need for peak load from oil boilers at -3° C appeared not to sue; it ended up at -6° C. The results indicate that a 10 MW oil boiler can be converted to 5 MW wood powder and while retaining its original power through a combination burner. Previously problems with woodpowderplant are taken care of and reference facilities in the current magnitude are in operation. An inquiry was sent out to get budget prices at a conversion of 5 and 10 MW oil boilers for evaluation. Even though all the suppliers was given the same opportunities so varied budget prices very much. A big surprise was the short payoff time on conversions of small oil boilers. The conversion of a 10 MW OP has a payback period of 20 months and that was rather unlikely before the study was performed. This study can also be seen as a source of inspiration to other companies that have small peak load boilers and want to phase out their fossil fuel dependence with renewable energy, and retain their competitiveness. In the district heating sector, these 5 and 10 MW oil boilers are ordinary peak load boilers. There are about 1000 oil boilers in the size from 5 to 10 MW in Sweden so it should be a large potential in converting oil boilers to wood powder

Alkaline pulping : deadload reduction studies in chemical recovery system

Chandra, Yusup 02 December 2004 (has links)
The kraft pulping process has been known for decades. The focus in kraft pulping has always been on better operation of the chemical recovery system. One of the targets is on deadload (sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3)) reduction in white liquor. A model based on several literature references was developed to study the effect of deadload reduction. A base model was developed based on current mill operation. This base model was compared to the deadload reduction model. Overall improvement, such as operating cost saving and revenue generation was achieved from deadload reduction. Operating cost saving involves less deadload chemical in chemical recovery system, and less water that was associated with the deadload itself. Revenue generation involves generating more steam and heat from the recovery boiler that can be used for mill purposes or energy revenue. Two important variables to achieve deadload reduction are causticizing efficiency and reduction efficiency.
