No último capítulo, valemo-nos em grande parte das teorias freudianas para demonstrar qual o resultado do jogo góticomelancólico entre Eros e Tânatos na poesia romântico-simbolista desses artistas. / The intent of this study is to draw analogies and contrasts between Edgar Allan Poe and Alphonsus de Guimaraens vis-à-vis the aesthetic principles they decided to impress upon their poetic work, chiefly as far as the themes of love (Eros) and death (Thanatos) are concerned. We have endeavored to describe that these poetic overtones are addressed from a gothic-melancholic angle in order to reach the sublime. In the first four chapters, we theorize on how the gothic, melancholy and the sublime can be intertwined poetically. In the fifth and sixth chapters, we discuss the modi operandi that Poe and Alphonsus employ in this tripartite relationship of gothic motifs, melancholy and the sublime. In the last chapter, we make use of Freudian theories to a large extent so as to demonstrate the outcome of this gothicmelancholic interplay between Eros and Thanatos in the romantic-symbolist poetry of these artists.

Machado engajou-se no modernismo brasileiro e inovou a narrativa do conto. Já Rockwell representou a cultura norte-americana por quase todo o século XX, sem utilizar, contudo, formas tão inovadoras como fez Alcântara. Esta dissertação de mestrado pretende analisar a existência de relações formais e temáticas entre os autores, ainda que haja poucas ligações artísticas, sociais ou econômicas entre eles. Valendo-se da teoria da intermidialidade e das funções da linguagem de Jakobson, busca-se estruturar um quadro comparativo e aumentar as possibilidades de leituras relativas a cultura e literatura expostas em parte da obra de Alcântara Machado e da de Norman Rockwell / Abstract: Antônio de Alcântara Machado and Norman Rockwell were representative figures when we think about Brazilian and American artistic production. Machado was engaged in the Brazilian modernism and innovated the narrative structure of short-stories. Rockwell, on the other hand, represented the American culture on his canvases for almost the entire twentieth century, without using, however, the same innovative way of production as Alcântara did. This dissertation aims to analyze the existence of formal and thematic links between those artists, even with few artistic, social or economic connection between them. Drawing on the theories about Intermidiality and Jakobson's functions of language, our intent is to structure a comparative panel and to increase the possibilities of readings related to culture and literature exhibited in the artistic production by Alcântara Machado and Normal Rockwell / Mestre

CAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / A presente pesquisa analisa e interpreta as peças Death of salesman [A morte do caixeiro viajante] (1949), do dramaturgo norte-americano Arthur Miller (1915 - 2005), e A Moratória (1955), do dramaturgo brasileiro Jorge Andrade (1922 - 1984), apoiando-se na forma da tragédia moderna, e baseando-se em ambos enredos, isto é, nos textos teatrais e nos seus respectivos conteúdos dramáticos reflexivos. Tais dramas mostram que tanto Miller quanto Andrade dividiram a mesma inquietude, propondo conflitos baseados em crises históricas, com o objetivo de evidenciar a luta do homem comum contra a sociedade, através do cotidiano de dois patriarcas e suas famílias, os quais estão deslocados com o desenvolvimento social e econômico de meados do século XX. Para entender esses e outros conflitos e como estão inseridos dramaturgicamente, este estudo está organizado da seguinte forma: o primeiro capítulo contextualiza historicamente a tragédia até sua condição moderna, após a influência do drama e de sua crise, com o propósito de se chegar à discussão sobre a tragédia e sua condição liberal adquirida na contemporaneidade. O segundo capítulo, apresenta a vida e a obra de ambos os dramaturgos, seguida das considerações iniciais acerca das peças em questão e de seus respectivos conteúdos históricos. E o terceiro capítulo, compara e analisa os aspectos relevantes de ambos os enredos, tais como: o conflito entre pais e filhos, a representação das mulheres, dos protagonistas como heróis modernos, das casas como plano de fundo das ações dramáticas e dos recursos formais cênicos que ajudam a dar expressividade às inquietações e à realidade subjetiva vivida pelos personagens. / Basead on the form of modern tragedy, the present research is devoted to analyzing the plays of Death of Salesman (1949), the american playwright Arthur Miller (1915 - 2005), and A Moratória (1955) by brazilian playwright Jorge Andrade (1922 – 1984), relying on the form of modern tragedy, and based on both texts, that is, on theatrical texts and their respective dramatic reflective content. These dramas demonstrate that both Miller and Andrade shared the same concern, proposing conflicts based on historical crises, in order to highlight the struggle of the common man against society, through the daily lives of two patriarchs and their families, who are displaced with the social and economic expansion of the mid-twentieth century. To understand these and other issues and how they are inserted dramaturgically, this study is organized as follows: the first chapter contextualizes historically the tragedy to its modern condition, after the influence of the drama and its crisis, with the purpose of arriving at the discussion about the tragedy and its liberal condition acquired in contemporaneity. The second chapter presents the life and work of both playwrights, followed by initial considerations about the plays in question and their respective historical contexts. The third and last chapter, however, compares and analyzes relevant aspects of both texts, such as: father-son conflict, representation of women, protagonists as modern heroes, of the houses as the background of dramatic actions and formal scenic resources that give expressiveness to the concerns and subjective reality experienced by the characters. / Dissertação (Mestrado)

ECO, 1969; HASSAN, 1987) e a fragmentação (cf. CURRIE, 1987; RUBENSTEIN, 1994; CALABRESE, 1999, p.84-90) em contos publicados nos livros Great Dream of Heaven (2002), do autor norte-americano Sam Shepard, e Mínimos, múltiplos, comuns (2003), do escritor brasileiro João Gilberto Noll. Com base em teorias associadas ao pós-modernismo (HASSAN, 1987; McHALE, 1987; JAMESON, 1991; VATTIMO, 2007), analisamos os procedimentos artístico-formais mobilizados pelos escritores como, por exemplo, usos criativos de processos paratáticos, indeterminações narrativas, desordens espaçotemporais e dissociações de imagens e ideias. As análises empreendidas orientam-se no sentido de demonstrar como as narrativas atípicas de Noll e Shepard instalam e subvertem expectativas e convenções do gênero conto. Além disso, esse estudo objetiva não apenas refletir sobre uma possível emergência do conto pós-moderno, mas também examinar como as estratégias narrativas mobilizadas pelos autores sugerem a fragmentação e a multiplicação de identidades (cf. HALL, 1987, 1992; BAUMAN, 2004) do sujeito ficcional no âmbito da contemporaneidade. / Abstract: This dissertation presents a study of narrative techniques such as indeterminacy (cf. ECO, 1969; HASSAN, 1987) and fragmentation (cf. CURRIE, 1987; RUBENSTEIN, 1994; CALABRESE, 1999, p.84-90) in short stories published in the books Great Dream of Heaven (2002), by the American author Sam Shepard, and Mínimos, múltiplos, comuns (2003), by the Brazilian writer João Gilberto Noll. Based on theories on postmodernism (HASSAN, 1987; McHALE, 1987; JAMESON, 1991; VATTIMO, 2007), this work analyzes artistic and formal procedures employed by the authors such as, for instance, their creative use of paratatic processes, narrative indeterminacies, space-time disorders, and dissociations of images and ideas. These analyses aim at showing how the atypical narratives of Noll and Shepard both use and subvert expectancies and conventions of the short story as a genre. Besides, the objective of the present study is not only to reflect upon a possible emergence of postmodern short story, but also to examine how the narrative strategies deployed by the authors suggest fragmentation and multiplication of identities (cf. HALL, 1987, 1992; BAUMAN, 2004) of the fictional subject in the contemporary world. / Doutor
