Entrepreneurial activity under market regulations : A qualitative study about entrepreneurship in the Swedish brewery industry

Kronholm, Thomas January 2009 (has links)

Sweden has a long tradition of strict alcohol policies and market regulations have been used in order to keep down the consumption among the population. The state has controlled the market through monopolies and high alcohol taxes. When Sweden entered the European Union four of the five monopolies were abandoned. At the same time entrepreneurial micro-breweries started to enter the market. The market is regulated by a retail monopoly (Systembolaget) and regulation considering marketing and production of alcohol products. The aim of the study was to investigate how the regulations have affected the entrepreneurs in the industry and which strategies they are using in order to compete with the big breweries which are dominating the market. Further, because it is an industry still under development, the issue of legitimacy for new industries is also included in the study.

In order to develop the understanding of how the entrepreneurial process might look like and which strategies that are available at an early stage in the process a theoretical framework was constructed. This includes theories about opportunity discovery and creation, market driven or market driving entrepreneurship, branding, and industry legitimacy.

The study has been done through a qualitative method based on interviews with three entrepreneurs who are founders of micro-breweries. The results of this study shows that the market regulations act both as a support and as a hinder for the entrepreneurial activity in the industry. Due to Systembolaget's formal procedures for selecting products to their assortment, the small companies are able to compete at same condition as the bigger players in the process. However, there are regulations which hinder an effective marketing of the companies, especially when potential customers are visiting the breweries and do not have the possibility to buy the product on site.

The lack of understanding among politicians for the values which guide the micro-breweries work is one reason to why the industry still struggles to gain legitimacy. A micro-brewers association has recently been founded in order to organize the entrepreneurs in a better way. This might lead to increased knowledge about their work in the future.

Om du inte verkligen gillar öl, köp något annat : En studie om hur den svenska mikrobryggeribranschen arbetar för att knyta autenticitet till sina varumärken

Flink, Mathias, van Huisstede, Johan January 2014 (has links)

Creating and retaining authenticity among craft breweries: a case study of local breweries in Boston, Massachusetts

Duggan, Claire 08 April 2016 (has links)
Brewing has a long history in this country--first making an appearance in 1620 with the landing of the Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts. Today, beers can be easily categorized into one of two types: 1) industrial, and 2) craft. The focus of this paper is on this second type, the "craft beer" and the so-called "renaissance" it experienced during the 1980s. In 1983, there were only 43 operating breweries in the United States--today there are over 3,000 (Brewers Association, 2014). The resource- partitioning model, established within the organizational ecology field, has been used to explain this rapid growth (Carol & Swaminathan, 2000). However, of particular interest to me, are the reasons for why craft breweries are so appealing to consumers. Pulling from literatures in Urban, Cultural, and Economic Sociology, I argue that the key characteristic that has allowed craft breweries to experience such success is their apparent "authenticity" (Zukin, 2010; Brown-Saracino, 2007; Peterson & Anand, 2004; Sherman, 2007). To date, the majority of analyses focused on "authenticity" have centered its creation within the realm of production (Johnston & Baumann, 2007). It is true that craft breweries cultivate a sense of "authenticity" based on their location, as well as the well curated image they project within their own space. However, I argue that it is through the consumption experience, in which both producers and consumers play a crucial role, that craft breweries are able to further cultivate this "authentic" image, as well as hold onto it (Jones et al., 2005; Sherman, 2007). The idea that "authenticity" is not only found within the realm of production, but also consumption (such as at coffee shops and restaurants), has been explored by sociologists such as Richard Lloyd and Sharon Zukin (Lloyd, 2006; Zukin, 2011). It is my intent to explore the ways in which this is the case at breweries, as well as the variables, such as space and place, that contribute to the experience of "authenticity."

Pivovar v meste – konverzia priemyselného areálu / Brewery in city – conversion of indrustrial area

Balciarová, Jana January 2018 (has links)
The main aim of the work is the conversion of the non-functional industrial site of the former canning factory and re-engagement of unused and unattractive territory into life city cycle - new life - new energy. The conversion consists of restoring a former canning factory building to the city brewery and restoring a former administrative building to a kindergarten. The brewery is complemented by services such as a beer bath, a beer museum, a beer restaurant and a hotel. The aim of the brewery is to revive the tradition of brewing in the region and to restore its industrial and cultural heritage. To connect it with the city not only physically but also socially, while supporting the untapped potential of tourism development. The region has long been struggling with a shortage of nursery schools. The original administrative building from 1902, which is currently almost unused and depreciated, has a favorable location in terms of availability and environment for primary education of children - connection with the park and the football field, which is also closely cooperating with kindergartens. The concept supports and benefits from the urban design of the city's revitalization of the adjacent sports and recreation zone, which is already under way. I see the site conversion as a stage of completing this section of the city.
