Heavy metal is one of the oldest genres inside of the musical universe of the rock and roll. In elapsing of last the four decades, heavy metal exceeded the strictly musical scope, becoming a worldwide cultural manifestation, around which it was built a specific media chain, that includes, among other elements, specialized publications. One of those publications is the subject of this study, the monthly magazine Rock Brigade, published in São Paulo since 1982. This study searches to understand as the representation of heavy metal produced by the magazine Rock Brigade can take to the formation of an identity for this musical genre and its fans. For this, it is analyzed the meanings produced in the discourses of interviewees, journalists and readers that can be found in the publication. Joined to the constructionist perspective of the journalism, this study uses the British Cultural Studies as theoretic reference to think the questions about the representation and identities. The methodological support of the study is given by the Discourse Analysis of French tradition. In this research, six issues of Rock Brigade magazine were studied, with an intermission of four months between each one, covering a period of time started in June, 2005 and ended in March, 2007, totalizing 198 texts which resulted in 309 discursive sequences. The analysis disclosed that the meanings established in four discursive formations – “the community of the different ones”, “the fighting ones”, “the reverends to the tradition” and “the beings of the darkness” – establishes a representation of heavy metal as absolutely distinct from the others musical genres. This delimitation becomes heavy metal a singular symbolic space with which the members of its community of fans can be identified.

The Civil War DietBrennan, Matthew Philip 27 June 2005 (has links)
The soldier's diet in the Civil War has been known as poor, and a number of illnesses and disorders have been associated with it. However, a nutritional analysis placed within the context of mid-nineteenth century American nutrition has been lacking. Such an approach makes clear the connection between illness and diet during the war for the average soldier and defines the importance of nutrition's role in the war. It also provides a bridge from the American diet to the soldier diet, outlining correlations between the two and examining the influence of physicians, chemists, and health reformers on the Civil War diet. / Master of Arts

The Bakkie Brigade in Cape Town’s urban waste economy: exploring waste mobilities and the precariatGoeiman, Johnathan January 2020 (has links)
Magister Artium - MA / Solid waste management in South Africa is in a phase of transitioning. This transition entails
the valorisation and diversion of recyclable waste away from landfills for the creation of a new
secondary recycling economy. However, reclaimers within the Global South have been
engaged in valorising waste through market-driven pricing. Localised and ‘informal’ as they
are, they remain a significant source of labour for global capital. Their presence runs parallel
to the emergence of green models such as the circular economy, coupled with contentious
initiatives that aim at formalising and integrating reclaimers. Given the revitalised emphasis on
the urban waste economy, inadequate attention has been given to understanding the linkages
between the formal processing companies and informal waste reclaimers operating at the level
of the street and landfill.
