"The Verdict of History": Defining and Defending James Buchanan through Public MemorializationO'Hara, Stephen Patrick 05 June 2012 (has links)
Throughout the first half of the nineteenth century, decorum called for the veneration of past presidents as devoted patriots. The terms "sage" and "statesman," which became synonymous with patriotism, riddled the remembrances of every president during this period. The Civil War, however, marked a significant shift in national meanings of patriotism. Civic virtue and morality gave way to post-Civil War ideals of warrior heroism. No longer would presidents simply be expected to maintain virtue and character; rather, they were to exhibit the heroism of Civil War soldiers. For those presidents who did not meet the public's new patriotic criteria, their once untouchable legacies became contested terrain.
This thesis explores how changing definitions of patriotism influenced the public's consideration of and relationship with presidents, and how the former leaders — as well as their families and supporters — manipulated the nation's collective memory of their lives and administrations. It specifically focuses on James Buchanan (d. 1 June 1868), whose administration not only preceded the Civil War but also bore the brunt of post-Civil War opprobrium. Buchanan and his descendents repeatedly sought to refute the public's disparaging "verdict of history," which criticized the former president's passivity in response to secession as evidence of his lack of patriotism. Over time, various forms of monuments and memorials arose in an attempt to counteract this criticism. This thesis demonstrates that as the Civil War influenced meanings of patriotism, presidents and their descendants took measures to control public memory via increasingly innovative and elaborate forms of memorialization. / Master of Arts

A cidade e a mobilidade na era do automóvel: a obra de Colin Buchanan (1958-1966) / The city and mobility in the automobile age: the work of Colin Buchanan (1958-1966)Seixas, Alexandre Rodrigues 26 August 2010 (has links)
The object of this thesis is to provide subsidies for understanding the complex relationship between the city and its circulation systems, especially from the several urban transformations that have occurred over the twentieth century. It is our hypothesis that the work of the British engineer-planner Colin Buchanan, drafted between 1958 and 1966, constitutes an important contribution to the debate about this relationship, mainly by shifting the focus of concerns about traffic issues for the city. In this movement, Buchanan makes a strong point of view against some hegemonic currents of transportation planning that emphasized the issues favored constructive or economic analysis. This work identifies a clear option for the car as a mode of transportation and discusses four key urban issues: 1) urban mobility as a political issue, 2) the movement as urban phenomenon, 3) the local urban scale, 4) urban structure and regional traffic. These four dimensions, as named in this work, support what we consider his proposal to the city for the automobile age.

Investigation of coal bumps in the Pocahontas No. 3 seam, Buchanan County, VirginiaLessley, John C. January 1983 (has links)
Attempts to recover reserves of coal situated within barrier pillars in the Beatrice Mine using the room and pillar method have thus far been largely frustrated due to magnitude, in or near the working places shortly after commencement of retreat mining in a given area. Since pillar mining offers the opportunity for achieving relatively high production at a low cost per ton the development of methods for the detection and distressing of areas of high bump probability in advance of mining would significantly improve the competitive position of the deep mines operating in the Pocahontas No. 3 seam in Buchanan County, Virginia.
Unstable ground movements occurring within a panel of pillars removed using continuous mining equipment were detected using the microseismic monitoring system developed by the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Areas of high stress occurring within the panel were detected by a series of convergence points installed by the mine operator and by small diameter auger holes drilled into individual pillars. The highest levels of seismic activity were recorded during the mining of pillars which, though themselves suffering convergence to some extent, were situated inby areas in which greater amounts of closure had occurred. The presence of anomalous geologic structures in the roof strata outby, as well as the presence of pillars of irregular geometry, in close proximity to areas of high seismic occurrence was also noted.
Of the pillars probed using auger drilling it was determined, using criteria developed in Poland for evaluation of bump prone pillars, that two pillars in the next panel to be mined presented an extreme hazard, while several others were of intermediate hazard potential. The practice of injecting water into pillars through holes drilled well in advance of mining was found to be largely ineffective, though injection carried out immediately following drilling of the hole in a highly stressed pillar did induce rapid convergence for a period of approximately two weeks. / M. Abel Souris et Jean Rose à l'école du théâtre antique : édition, traduction et commentaire de deux tragédies latines issues du Collège de Navarre (1557-1558) / Abel souris and Jean Rose at the school of ancient theatre : editing, translation and study of two latin tragedies from the College of Navarre (1557-1558)Syssau, Éric 12 November 2010 (has links)
This work contributes to knowledge of theatrical performances in Parisian colleges in the sixteenth century through the editing, translation and analysis of two Latin tragedies written by students at the College of Navarre. The manuscript plays were almost contemporary and were both inspired by French secular history. The Dire Fate of the French in the Vermandois Region and the Distressing Fall of the Most Valiant Duke of Estouteville and Count of Enghien (Paris, 1557, Bibl. nat. ms fonds latin 8136) was written by a teacher from Rouen, Abel Souris, and laments the tragic fall of Jean de Bourbon, recently killed in the battle of Saint-Quentin. Chilperic (Paris, [1558], bibl. mun. Chaumont ms 213 (3-I-5 k)) was the work of Jean Rose, a fifteen-years-old student from Chaumont, who was familiar with Paolo¡Emili s and Robert Gaguin s History of the Franks. It stages the cruelty of the Merovingian king and his murder instigated by his adulterous wife Fredegund. A study of the literary sources of both plays reveals a sound knowledge of Seneca, of course, but also of the work of contemporary neo-Latin dramatists, Buchanan, Muret and Roillet. Special attention has been paid to the scholastic context (research into the college, its students and its library of the humanities in 1557-1558) and to accounts of theatrical activity at the College of Navarre (performances in 1533 and 1572). The authors later lives one became an ecclesiastic and the other a magistrate have been carefully reconstructed through archival research
