Upper floor housing in downtown Burlington, Iowa

Goehring, Alicia L. January 1992 (has links)
This thesis has evaluated if housing is a feasible alternative for vacant upper floor space in the central business district of small towns in general and in downtown Burlington, Iowa, specifically. The study required discussing the issue of housing in vacant upper floor spaces in general, establishing if there was a need for additional multi-use housing in the Burlington, Iowa housing market, and finally determining if there was vacant upper floor space that would fulfill this need. The analysis determined that housing was indeed a feasible and practical use for vacant upper floor space in downtown areas in general and in Burlington, Iowa specifically. The study provided a method that could be used to ascertain the feasibility of this type of housing in other towns as well. / Department of Urban Planning

Conveying Portland's History in Modern Use: The Role of Industrial and Cultural Heritage in Adaptive Reuse / Role of Industrial and Cultural Heritage in Adaptive Reuse

Churchward, Patience, 1981- 06 1900 (has links)
xvii, 146 p. : ill. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / This thesis examines the role of cultural heritage in adaptively reused historic industrial buildings in Portland, Oregon. While it has been argued that adaptive reuse contributes to the ecological and economic initiatives of sustainability, this research explores how adapting historic industrial buildings for modern reuse can also be socially and culturally sustainable for communities. Industrial buildings provide physical evidence of a rich cultural and industrial past and there are opportunities to share this heritage with a building's new users and/or the surrounding community. Case studies include selectively chosen National Register nominated buildings that meet specific criteria, share a common regulatory framework, and provide insightful information regarding the relationship between history and new use. Strengths and challenges of conveying industrial heritage in modern use as well as opportunities for developers of historic properties to highlight and improve upon this process are identified. / Committee in Charge: Robert Z. Extending the life of historic worship spaces in Indianapolis and Zionsville

Loukianoff, Natalie S. January 2007 (has links)
This thesis examines the adaptive use of historic churches in Indianapolis and Zionsville. It looks at the decline and revitalization of urban neighborhoods which led to the adaptive use of historic churches. It examines seven case studies in Indianapolis and Zionsville, Indiana representing the new use by different congregations, use of historic churches by a not-for-profit organizations, and for-profit uses of historic churches. These case studies typify a national trend toward adaptively using historic churches and retaining them as anchors for the neighborhoods in which they exist. This thesis also makes conclusions about which of the adaptive uses is most desirable and which is lest desirable. / Department of Architecture

A corporate fitness center : an example for the reuse of the Empire Stores, Brooklyn, N.Y.

Georgopulos, Diane Theodora January 1982 (has links)
Thesis (M. Arch.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1982. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Includes bibliographical references. / The proliferation of over 500 fitness programs for the employees of American corporations marks a turning point for the way American corporations regard employee and corporate health. Typically, sports facilities were the province of recreation or education facility planners. A category of sports activities has been isolated, however, for its cardiovascular characteristics and is the basic component of a fitness program The physiological characteristic which are of concern are those activities which contribute to the "training effect" of the heart or the ability of the heart to pump blood and oxygen to the body. The benefits of this conditioning are manifold. Longitudinal medical studies indicate that there are positive relationships across a large population for aerobic exercises or exercises which demand oxygen and decreased risk of heart attack in later life. While the correlation between exercise and good health seems merely the confirmation of good sense, it is a recent occurrence that this relationship has been quantified by corporations and utilized to increase "corporate health," through the construction of fitness facilities for employees. The intention behind this thesis is to explore the existing information about fitness centers and design a facility as the reuse of an historic building in Brooklyn, New York. / by Diane Theodora Georgopulos. / M.Arch.
