The fundamental objective of this Thesis is to analyze the socio-historical process of the institution and the development of the productive/commercial phenomenon called Feira da Sulanca, which was shaped in the Agreste Region of Pernambuco State, located in the Northeast of Brazil, during the years of 1950 and 1960. The research included the fields of Sociology of Development, Sociology of Labor, Rural Sociology and Social Anthropology. In addition, the focus is on the apprehension of the life style, which includes the informal characteristic of the rural family working pattern, migration for income, climate reasons, and the popular northeastern street market typical in the described region, which according to our hypothesis made this institution and development such a phenomenon. The Thesis used mainly, as methodological tools, interviews with the Sulanca “saga” pioneers and descendants who took over the business, declared in their own words, describing their behaviors, practices and experiences, were observed that this rural social group initiative created a petite bourgeoisie that, successfully, “modernized” that market and transformed the socioeconomic relations and customs in the region.
