Bus Rapid Transit design parameters and their impact on travel times : A micro-simulation study of boarding and alighting through all doors and bus lanes

Sweden has defined a national transportation objective that aim at making public transportation the most attractive option in more situations. One way of making public transportation mote attractive is to ensure that it is rapid. BRT stands for Bus Rapid Transit and is concept that ensures speed and reliability of public transportation buses through combined priority measures. However, accessibility measures for urban buses are often compromised and not prioritized politically. If the travel time saved for these measures can be estimated, then they are more likely to be implemented. Two components that have been defined for Swedish BRT were tested on a proposed BRT corridor in the city of Södertälje through microsimulation tool VISSIM. The two components that were tested was boarding and alighting through all doors and bus lanes, both median and curb side. The components were tested on a 3,2 km long corridor using the current actuated traffic signal that was currently in use. To test the measures a sensitivity analysis was carried out with three different levels of traffic and five different passenger levels for boarding and alighting. Only the impact on travel time for the bus was studied. The travel time savings from the measure boarding and alighting through all doors was 1 to 3 percent but only significant for the higher levels of boarding with an average of 12 to 15 boarding passengers per stop. The travel time savings of the curb side bus lane with actuated traffic signals was estimated to be up to 5 percent and for the median bus lane up to 11 percent in congested traffic conditions.

Värmdö is a commuter municipality to Stockholm. Road 222 between Värmdö and Stockholm is the main commuter route for both bus and car traffic. Road 222 is a bottleneck at Farstabron in the direction towards Värmdö, where the motorway will go from two to one lane and become a non-meeting motorway. Towards Stockholm, the bridge has two lanes, which is why capacity is not affected as strongly in that direction. The accessibility problems arise mainly in the direction of Värmdö during maximum hours in the afternoon and during weekends and summer time as the municipality also has many holiday homes. Measures to improve accessibility have been raised by both the municipality and the Swedish Transport Administration. Building a new bridge is not relevant as the remaining expected technical life of the bridge is long. The Swedish Transport Administration has an idea for a reversible lane solution on the bridge, which is the proposal studied in this thesis. Data collection and traffic analysis has been performed to study how the travel time effect would be if Farstabron was rebuilt into a reversible 2 + 1 road, with or without a reversible bus lane. The tool used is the microsimulation program PTV VISSIM. The results show that a reversible solution without a bus lane is the alternative that provides by far the largest travel time gains for both car and bus in 2040. The degree project contains a chapter that deals with traffic engineering theory and traffic simulation theory as well as a literature study chapter that summarizes the knowledge about reversible lanes. The information about reversible lanes, even international studies, is poor.Experiences of reversible lanes is good and is mainly to be recommended as the flow in one direction is significantly greater than in the other. The traffic safety risk is primarily linked to unprotected road users. The most common internationally according to what has been identified is to implement reversible lanes on motorways with protective barriers. However, no reversible lane without a barrier have been identified holding 80km/h. Studies have shown that reversible lanes could have a cost-benefit ratio of around 7, which means that the benefit outweighed the costs 7 times in money measured. The weaving dynamics of VISSIM from two to one lane were challenging to calibrate against the reality. Preparatory behavior during lane changes is mainly affected by car-following and lane-changing models in VISSIM. In the simulation the correlation with collected data was slightly more accurate with the car following model for W99 (freeway) rather than W74 (weaving urban rd).

No Brasil os pavimentos novos de rodovias e corredores de ônibus com tráfego pesado tem sido dimensionados empregando-se métodos empíricos e avaliados estruturalmente utilizando a análise mecanicista baseada na teoria da elasticidade. Nestes procedimentos as características de deformabilidade dos revestimentos de misturas asfálticas usualmente são consideradas fixas para uma determinada temperatura e uma velocidade de carregamento. Em campo, os pavimentos estão sujeitos a uma variedade de condições climáticas e operacionais diferentes daquelas preestabelecidas no dimensionamento. Considerando que os revestimentos asfálticos são constituídos de materiais visco-elásticos, dependentes das condições operacionais, o trabalho teve por objetivo, através de estudos paramétricos e utilizando modelos comportamentais constantes na bibliografia existente, verificar a influência da variação da temperatura e da velocidade dos veículos pesados no desempenho dos pavimentos dimensionados através dos procedimentos tradicionalmente adotados pelos principais órgãos rodoviários brasileiros. O trabalho verifica ainda, embasado na análise mecanicista, a adequabilidade estrutural das espessuras mínimas de revestimento asfáltico recomendadas pelos métodos empíricos para cada nível de solicitação do tráfego, em função de eventuais alterações nas condições climáticas e operacionais que possam ocorrer durante a vida útil do pavimento em campo. / In Brazil, the new highways pavements and bus lane with heavy traffics have been dimensioned by empirical methods and structurally evaluated using mechanistic elastic theory. In these procedures the characteristics of deformability of asphalt pavements courses are usually fixed to a specific temperature and loading speed. In the fields, the pavements are exposed to a variety of different climatic and operational conditions from those previous established. Considering that the asphalt layers are made from thermo-visco-elastic and depends on the operational conditions, the aim of this current study was to verify the influence of the temperature variation also the speed of heavy vehicles in the performance of pavements through procedures traditionally adopted by road agencies and parametric studies using behavioral models in existing literature. This academic work also notes, based on mechanistic criteria, structural adequacy of the asphaltic surface course minimum thickness recommended by empirical methods for each traffic demand, due to possible changes in climatic and operational conditions that may occur during the pavement area lifecycle.
