The rate of decay of the process W -> Wγ is well-defined by the Standard Model, so measured deviation is a strong but indirect indicator of non-Standard Model physics. Deviations of this coupling strength can be parameterized, in a model independent, general sense, into two parameters, Δk and λ.

A simple two scale compactification scheme for the E(8) x E(8) heterotic string is studied. The internal space used is a direct product of two compact spaces, each with its own length scale. Compactification on the smaller 4-dimensional (4d) manifold is carried out to obtain 6d theories with simple supersymmetry (SUSY). Assuming the background torsion vanishes, we show that this manifold must be K3. Compactification on K3 is studied in detail. Also analyzed are the two possible torsion-free compactifications on the orbifold K3$ sp prime$ (the limit of the manifold K3). The compactification from 6d to 4d on the larger scale 2d manifold results in Grand Unified Theories (GUT's) with broken SUSY. We show that it is not possible to generate a realistic theory using our scheme. Strings exclude what is conceivable from the perspective of point field theories: getting a realistic GUT from a 6d theory with simple SUSY.

Compact Dynamical Foliations

According to the work of Dennis Sullivan, there exists a smooth flow on the 5-sphere all of whose orbits are periodic although there is no uniform bound on their periods. The question addressed in this thesis is whether such an example can occur in the partially hyperbolic context. That is, does there exist a partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism of a compact manifold such that all the leaves of its center foliation are compact although there is no uniform bound for their volumes. We will show that the answer to the previous question under the very mild hypothesis of dynamical coherence is no. The thesis is organized as follows. In the first chapter we give the necessary background and results in partially hyperbolic dynamics needed for the rest of the work, studying in particular the geometry of the center foliation. Chapter two is devoted to a general discussion of compact foliations. We give proof or sketches of all the relevant results used. Chapter three is the core of the thesis, where we establish the non existence of Sullivan's type of examples in the partially hyperbolic domain, and generalize to diffeomorphisms whose center foliation has arbitrary dimension. The last chapter is devoted to applications of the results of chapter three, where in particular it is proved that if the center foliation of a dynamically coherent partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism is compact and without holonomy, then it is plaque expansive.

Investigations of a printed circuit heat exchanger for supercritical CO2 and water

Tokuhiro / In the STAR-LM (Secure Transportable Autonomous Reactor-Liquid Metal) reactor concept developed at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), a supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) Brayton cycle is used as the power conversion system because it features advantages such as a higher efficiency due to less compressive work, and competitive cost due to a reduced complexity and size. From the components of the cycle, high performance of both the recuperator and precooler has a large influence on the overall cycle efficiency and plant economy. One attractive option for optimizing the performance of the cycle is to use an high efficiency heat exchanger such as the Printed Circuit Heat Exchanger (PCHE) manufactured by Heatric. The PCHE is a compact heat exchanger with high effectiveness, wide operating range, enhanced safety, and low cost. PCHEs are used in various industrial applications, but are relatively new to the nuclear industry. In this study, performance testing of a PCHE using supercritical CO2 and water as heat transfer media were performed at ANL. The heat transfer characteristics of the PCHE under operating conditions of the STAR_LM precooler were investigated. The S-CO2 , defined the “hot-side”, had its outlet condition near the pseudocritical point at 7.5MPa (~31-32 C). We found that of all the thermophysical properties undergoing rapid change near the critical point, heat transfer for S-CO2 is strongly correlated with the specific heat of CO2. Additional experiments performed with different bulk temperatures and pressures on the hot side also supported this conclusion. We proposed plotting the heat transfer results, (Nu2 + Pr2/3) versus (RePr4/3), based on an order-of-magnitude analysis, to reveal the close proximity of the outlet to pseudocritical conditions. In order to check the experimental results, a nodal model of a segmented PCHE using a traditional log-mean temperature difference method was developed. This approach provided the temperature distribution along the heat exchanger. Additionally a CFD simulation (FLUENT) of a 4-layer, zig-zag channeled PCHE was developed. Comparison of the simulation and LMTD nodal model revealed that indeed specific heat strongly influenced the heat transfer.
