Convergência compacta de resolvente e o teorema de Trotter Kato para perturbações singulares / Compact convergence of resolvent and Trotter-Kato\'s Theorem for singular pertubations

Cardoso, Cesar Augusto Esteves das Neves 23 March 2012 (has links)
In this work we study a version of Trotter-Katos Theorem that establishes an equivalence between the continuity, with respect to a parameter, of the resolvent operators and the continuity of the associated linear semigroups. The unbounded operators involved (generators of analytic semigroups) are defined spaces that vary with the parameter leading us to introduce methods to compare vectors in different Banach spaces. We apply this theorem to an elliptic boundary value problem with Neumann boundary condition in a highly oscillating thin domain that degenerates to a line segment as the parameter varies. In this application we use the multiple scale method (frequently used in the homogenization theory) to obtain, formally, the limiting problem (see [17]) and, in the sequel, we prove the compact convergence of resolvent operators using the oscillating test functions of Tartar [15] (see also [16] and Cioranescu and Saint Jean Paulin [12]) defined with the aid of an auxiliary problem as well as extension operators

Selective catalytic hydrogenation in a structured compact multifunctional reactor

Fan, Xiaolei January 2010 (has links)
Selective hydrogenation is an important class of chemical reactions for the production of speciality chemicals, pharmaceuticals and petrochemicals. The challenges in this type of reactions are to control selectivity in hydrogenation of poly-functional molecules, and avoid the possible risk of reaction runaway due to the high exothermisity. In this project the fundamentals of liquid-phase hydrogenation reactions in a structured compact multifunctional reactor were investigated. This technology represents an advance over the existing hydrogenation technologies because it exploits the effects of reduced characteristic paths of mass and heat transfer, attained in compact reactor architecture with mm-scale reaction channels and integrated static mixers and micro-heat exchangers. Catalysts based on mesoporous synthetic carbons were developed especially for preparing micro-packed beds in the compact reactor. The investigation resulted in fundamental information on reactor performance for selected model reactions, heat transfer efficiency of the integrated micro-heat exchangers, development of continuous tandem reaction, and evaluation of developed catalysts for hydrogenation and hydrodehalogenation reactions under the continuous flow conditions being used. The results demonstrate that the structured compact multifunctional reactor might be a promising technology to transfer conventional heterogeneous catalysis to flow regime.

The objective of this thesis is to study the fluid oscillation modes in compact stars, understand their properties and infer stellar structures from their frequencies. The first part of the thesis focuses on the Newtonian theory of stellar pulsation and the Cowling approximation (CA), which neglects the change in gravitational potential. We modify the conventional CA, devise a more accurate version of the CA and calculate the first-order correction to the conventional CA. In the second part, we apply the variational approximation method proposed by Chandrasekhar [Astrophys. J. 139,664 (1963)] and δ-perturbation expansion proposed by Bender et. al. [J. Maths. Phys. 30, 1447 (1989)] to explain the universality in the relationships between the fundamental mode frequency and the moment of inertia of neutron stars, which was discovered by Lau et. al. [Astrophys. J. 714, 1234 (2010)]. We reveal that stiff equations of state are the conditions for the observed universality. In the third part, we consider the relativistic pulsation formulation and relativistic CAs for compact stars. We unify several known CAs with a single second-order differential equation. We also extend the modified CA derived from the formalism established by Allen et. al. [Phys. Rev. D 58, 124012 (1998)] to include the effect of buoyancy. Finally, we find the first-order and the second-order post-Newtonian expansions for the nonradial pulsations in quark stars. We derive an analytic formula expressing the fundamental mode frequency in terms of the compactness of quark stars. As a result, we are able to verify the universality mentioned above for quark stars. / Thesis M.Phil. Gravitational Wave Astrophysics with Compact Binary Systems

Addison, Eric 01 May 2014 (has links)
In this dissertation, I present two studies in the field of gravitational wave astrophysics applied to compact binary systems. In the first project, I investigate simulated encounters between a binary system comprised of two stellar mass black holes with a galactic supermassive black hole. It is found that binaries disrupted by the supermassive black hole form extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs), which would begin with very high eccentricity, e ≈ 1 − O(10−2), but circularize dramatically by the emission of gravitational wave radiation. At the time when the stable orbit turns over to a plunge orbit, the EMRIs still have some small residual eccentricity, e ≈ 0.05 on average, which is slightly larger than previous estimates. The surviving binaries are classified based on their final relation with the supermassive black hole. When inspecting the merger lifetime of the surviving binaries, a mean new merger lifetime of ˜ T = 0.8T0 is found. Factoring in this new lifetime with other relevant data, I calculate the merger rate of these systems in the range of the advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory to be about 0.25 yr−1, which represents a small percentage of the current predicted CBC rates. In the second project I propose and explore a new method of estimating the radius of the accretion disc in cataclysmic variable binary systems though the use of coupled electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations. By identifying the angle of the hot spot formed by the impact of the accretion stream with the disc, φHS, the radius of the disc can be recovered. I test the proposed method against fully simulated lightcurve output, as well as the true observed AM CVn lightcurve. In both cases, I find our method capable of estimating the disc radius to high precision. I calculate a disc radius of ˆRD/a ≈ 0.476°”0.025 for the fully simulated data and ˆRD/a ≈ 0.481 °” 0.05 for the true lightcurve data. These estimates agree with the accepted value of RD = 0.478a within the uncertainties, and differ from the accepted value by 0.4% and 0.6%, respectively. Because this method does not rely on eclipses, it will be applicable to a much broader population of binaries.

Compact Group Actions and Harmonic Analysis

Chung, Kin Hoong, School of Mathematics, UNSW January 2000 (has links)
A large part of the structure of the objects in the theory of Dooley and Wildberger [Funktsional. Anal. I Prilozhen. 27 (1993), no. 1, 25-32] and that of Rouviere [Compositio Math. 73 (1990), no. 3, 241-270] can be described by considering a connected, finite-dimentional symmetric space G/H (as defined by Rouviere), with ???exponential map???, Exp, from L G/L H to G/H, an action, ???: K ??? Aut??(G) (where Aut?? (G) is the projection onto G/H of all the automorphisms of G which leave H invariant), of a Lie group, K, on G/H and the corresponding action, ???# , of K on L G/L H defined by g ??? L (???g), along with a quadruple (s, E, j, E#), where s is a ???# - invariant, open neighbourhood of 0 in L G/L H, E is a test-function subspace of C??? (Exp s), j ?? C??? (s), and E# is a test-function subspace of C??? (s) which contains { j.f Exp: f ?? E }. Of interest is the question: Is the function ???: ?? ??? ????, where ??: f ??? j.f Exp, a local associative algebra homomorphism from F# with multiplication defined via convolution with respect to a function e: s x s ??? C, to F, with the usual convolution for its multiplication (where F is the space of all ??? - invariant distributions of E and F# is the space of all ???# - invariant distributions of E#)? For this system of objects, we can show that, to some extent, the choice of the function j is not critical, for it can be ???absorbed??? into the function e. Also, when K is compact, we can show that ??? ker ?? = { f ?? E : ???k f (???g) dg = 0}. These results turn out to be very useful for calculations on s2 ??? G/H, where G = SO(3) and H??? SO(3) with H ??? SO(2) with ??? : h ??? Lh, as we can use these results to show that there is no quadruple (s, E, j, E#) for SO(3)/H with j analytic in some neighbourhood of 0 such that ??? is a local homomorphism from F# to F. Moreover, we can show that there is more than one solution for the case where s, E and E# are as chosen by Rouviere, if e is does not have to satisfy e(??,??) = e(??,??).

CSR : Företagens motiv och effekten på anseendet

Pekkarinen, Topi, Ålund, Rickard January 2009 (has links)

GRI and Global Compact : For what?

Carlsson, Maria, Lindqvist, Lois January 2007 (has links)
<p>With sustainability means taking responsibility for the reality that you live and operate in. The concept sustainable development is defined as “development that meets the needs of the present world without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Elkington, 1999, p, 55).</p><p>Sustainable reporting means to extend the ordinary financial reporting to include both the environmental and social/ethical impacts that the organisation have, so called triple bottom line. We are in our essay discussing the element of sustainability reporting and how to perform one. Today there are an increased pressure from stakeholders on companies to express their values and ethical responsibility. This forces the organisations to extend their ordinary financial reporting to include environmental and social impacts that their operations have.</p><p>We have in our essay looked at the global ethical guidelines for sustainability reporting, the Global Compact and the Global Reporting Initiative and from these tried to examine how companies can establish a sustainability report. Global Compact and the Global Reporting Initiative are two voluntary codes that companies can draw inspire from when creating a sustainability report.</p><p>Our purpose with this essay is to examine the concept of sustainability reporting on the basis of observing three financial institutions and their sustainability reports. We have chosen to look at the three different banks, Rabobank Group, the Co-operative Financial Services and Swedbank, to compare how they have constructed their sustainability reports, and to see how they have drawn inspiration from the Global Compact and the Global Reporting Initiative.</p><p>The investigation is of a qualitative approach where the examined source is the companies’ sustainability reports. The reports have been analyzed and from the analysis have conclusions been drawn to try and interpret how the companies have acted towards the guidelines. Mainly we have been looking at the organisations and the existing balance between the economical, social and environmental aspects. Further we have also been looking at the organisational structure and the management’s attitude towards Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR, and the progress to implement it within the organisations. Finally we have tried to observe the relationship between the organisations and stakeholders and the transparency in communicating about the measures being taken.</p><p>We have come to the conclusion that both Rabobank and Co-operative Financial Services, CFS, have a more developed sustainability report compared to Swedbank.</p><p>We believe the reason why can be found in many different aspects, since there is not just one component that makes a sustainability report. Both Rabobank and CFS are co-operative organisations that are being owned and controlled by its members, compared to Swedbank who is a public company that have obligations towards its shareholders. The managements’ attitude towards sustainability also has an effect of the outcome of the reports as well as attitudes from the society in which the company is operating.</p>

Stellar Models in General Relativity

Samuelsson, Lars January 2003 (has links)
Neutron stars are some of the most fascinating objects in Nature. Essentially all aspects of physics seems to be represented inside them. Their cores are likely to contain deconfined quarks, hyperons and other exotic phases of matter in which the strong interaction is the dominant force. The inner region of their solid crust is penetrated by superfluid neutrons and their magnetic fields may reach well over 1012 Gauss. Moreover, their extreme mean densities, well above the densities of nuclei, and their rapid rotation rates makes them truly relativistic both in the special as well as in the general sense. This thesis deals with a small subset of these phenomena. In particular the exciting possibility of trapping of gravita-tional waves is examined from a theoretical point of view. It is shown that the standard condition R &lt; 3M is not essential to the trapping mechanism. This point is illustrated using the elegant tool provided by the optical geometry. It is also shown that a realistic equation of state proposed in the literature allows stable neutron star models with closed circular null orbits, something which is closely related to trapped gravitational waves. Furthermore, the general relativistic theory of elasticity is reviewed and applied to stellar models. Both static equilibrium as well as radially oscillating configurations with elasticsources are examined. Finally, Killing tensors are considered and their applicability to modeling of stars is discussed
