Recommender Systems for the Conference Paper Assignment Problem

Conry, Donald C. 29 June 2009 (has links)
Conference paper assignment---the task of assigning paper submissions to reviewers---is a key step in the management and smooth functioning of conferences. We study this problem as an application of recommender systems research. Besides the traditional goal of predicting `who likes what?', a conference management system must take into account reviewer capacity constraints, adequate numbers of reviews for papers, expertise modeling, conflicts of interest, and an overall distribution of assignments that balances reviewer preferences with conference objectives. Issues of modeling preferences and tastes in reviewing have traditionally been studied separately from the optimization of assignments. In this thesis, we present an integrated study of both aspects. First, due to the sparsity of data (relative to other recommender systems applications), we integrate multiple sources of information to learn reviewer/paper preference models, using methods commonly associated with merging content-based and collaborative filtering in the study of large recommender systems. Second, our models are evaluated not just in terms of prediction accuracy, but also in terms of end-assignment quality, and considering multiple evaluation criteria. Using a linear programming-based assignment optimization formulation, we show how our approach better explores the space of potential assignments to maximize the overall affinities of papers assigned to reviewers. Finally, we demonstrate encouraging results on real reviewer preference data gathered during the IEEE ICDM 2007 conference, a premier international data mining conference. Our research demonstrates that there are significant advantages to applying recommender system concepts to the conference paper assignment problem. / Master of Science

Understanding conference attendee's experience quality and value perception: the case of academic association conferences

Choi, Young Gin January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of Hospitality and Dietetics / Chihyung Ok and Betsy Barrett / The meeting industry has seen significant growth over the last few decades and has now become truly global. As the number of conferences increases and attendees have so many conferences to choose from, understanding how they evaluate the conference experience is more important than ever. Previous studies have focused on site selection factors, destination perception and image, economic impact, and meeting planner issues, not on the conference experience itself. Annual association conferences are lucrative because of the large number of attendees they bring to the host destination. In marketing and managing association conferences, host destinations and meeting convention organizers are increasingly interested in how attendees evaluate the conference experience. With the first conceptual model, this study sought to reveal the effect of perceived conference quality dimensions on conference experience quality dimensions. Academic association conference was taken as the context, and data were collected to validate the proposed models. A self-reported questionnaire was distributed to faculty members from twenty randomly selected universities in the United States who attended an academic association conference at least once within the past year. The hypotheses included in the conceptual model were examined based on responses from 370 faculty members in the United States. The proposed relationships were analyzed by using PLS-SEM analysis which involves evaluation of measurement model and structural model. The results indicated significant relationships among all conference specific dimensions (i.e., professional education and professional & social networking) and all conference experience quality dimensions (i.e., learning, self-esteem, and excitement). Moreover, all destination specific dimensions (i.e., site attractiveness, travelability, and site environment) had a significant relationship with excitement, but site attractiveness did not have a significant relationship with learning. With the second conceptual model, this study sought to verify the relationships among perceived conference value dimensions, satisfaction, and behavioral intentions. This study found that utilitarian value, hedonic value, and social value had significant effects on satisfaction and behavioral intentions. Given that understanding attendee behavior is critical in the meeting industry, this study benefits meeting planners and host destinations with information that allows them to maximize the conference experience for attendees, and attracting and retaining repeat attendees. The Design and Implementation of a Schedulable Passive SIP-based Conference Call

Hsu, Wei-chih 26 July 2010 (has links)
VoIP technology is one of the important applications of the network. In addition to using traditional PSTN telephone, people can choose favorable VoIP telephone because of the Internet popularization and High speed Internet. Conference is one of the functions of the VoIP, but not every server supported it. Such as OpenSIPS server we use in NSYSU, didn¡¦t supported it. But FreeSWITCH Server has it. Therefore, for solving this problem, I combile two Servers. Then OpenSIPS can use the Conference function. In this paper, we discuss how to combile OpenSIPS and FreeSWITCH. Besides, I have designed a WEB page interface to simplify the procedure to use conference. By this interface, the users can use it to set the timer to start conference. When the timer is up, all of the participants will receive a conference call. After picking up the phone, the users can enter conference.

Development of Internet Video Conference

Jue, Ming-Fai 05 August 2003 (has links)
We implement the ¡§Internet Video Conference System¡¨ based on ITU-T H.323 multimedia communication protocols standard in paper. This part, we discuss the H.323 protocols how to work on the Internet and analysis the network structure on the video conference system. Development of the system will consider network structure restrict, user habits and system integrate problem. We are not development the point-point communication, but also development multipoint communication by the multicast concept. To solve the distance and capacity problem on video conference, we research the ¡§Zone Switching¡¨ and ¡§Multi-MCU¡¨ structure this paper. We analysis the performance of the video conference system by the new structure, it includes ¡§switching structure of the different Zone¡¨ and ¡§switching structure of the same Zone¡¨. Finally, we analysis the performance and work on the Internet by the new structure.
