A Thermodynamic Investigation of the PVT, Solubility and Surface Tension of Polylactic Acid (PLA)/CO2 Mixtures

Mahmood, Syed 22 November 2012 (has links)
This thesis illustrates a comprehensive study on the PVT, solubility and surface tension properties of polylactic acid (PLA) with dissolved CO2 based on thermodynamic models. The solubility of CO2 in PLA melt was calculated by means of a gravimetric method, using a Magnetic Suspension Balance (MSB). The swelling volume of the polymer/gas mixture due to dissolution of gas was compensated for by direct measurement through a view cell or by theoretical models such as Simha Somcynsky (SS) - Equation of State (EOS) and Sanchez Lacombe (SL) - Equation of State (EOS). Three grades of PLA (i.e., PLA3001D, PLA8051D, and PLA4060D) were chosen. It was observed that the pressure, temperature, D-content and Molecular weight variance had an effect on the swelling and solubility. The surface Tension of PLA/CO₂ mixture was also calculated from the captured image using the Axsymmetric Drop Shape Analysis (ADSA). The effects of varying the pressure, temperature, and molecular weight on surface tension were investigated.

A Comparative Study of the Ethics of Christine M. Korsgaard and Jean-Paul Sartre

Zander, Michael Christopher 18 July 2008 (has links)
Christine M. Korsgaard and Jean-Paul Sartre both locate the source of ethical normativity in human reflective consciousness. Korsgaard’s claims that human beings are essentially rational, and that our rational nature is an adequate source of ethical content. Sartre argues that a conception of human nature this minimal is insufficient to provide ethical content, and that we must look to our particular projects and identities to provide moral content. I will argue that Sartre is correct that a view of human nature this minimal is inadequate to generate moral content, but that because Sartre is unable to demonstrate how norms based contingent projects and identities can produce universally binding ethical norms, his theory also fails. The failure of both projects illustrates the weakness of a conception of ethics as universal obligation because it fails by its own standard to produce it goal of universally binding ethical norms with content.

Trends in the creativity literature from 2000 to 2011

Chan, Chi-Te 31 July 2012 (has links)
Since 1950 Guilford promoted creativity research, the quality and quantity of creativity studies have increased substantially. Several programs have been designed for such purpose worldwide. The competitiveness of nations assesses innovation status among different countries as well. However, no study aims to analyze the recent research trends in creativity academic journal since 2000; therefore, this study analyzed three major creativity journals from 2000 to 2011 using the content analysis. This study employed Mayer (1999)¡¦s approach, and integrated the Runco (2004)¡¦s research topics for coding foundation. The uniqueness of this study was to provide the research trend from 760 creativity research literature in the past 11 years, and directions for future development. Results showed that the first three research approaches adopted were psychometric, experimental and contextual approach respectively. As for research topics, most of the articles elaborated on cognitive process, and then on personality. After 2006, however, the topics of personality shifted to education. The participants were mainly from higher education stage but rarely from preschool or retirees. Regarding international comparisons, the USA was the major output country. The rank of publish number in different countries was correlated with the rank of the innovation scores in the Global Competitiveness Report (GCR) of World Economic Forum (WEF). More journals and further investigations are needed for future studies. And also develop the creativity research area in different methodology and cultural system.

Impact of Cotton Harvesting and Storage Methods on Seed and Fiber Quality

Hamann, Mark Thomas 2011 December 1900 (has links)
There are currently two main types of machinery used for harvesting cotton in the United States, cotton pickers and cotton strippers with or without field cleaners. These different machine types package seed cotton with varying amounts of burrs, sticks, and leaves. Harvested cotton is placed in modules for storage prior to ginning. Recent developments in the industry include on-board module builders that package seed cotton as they harvest. This leads to three methods of storage: 1) traditional seed cotton modules, 2) half-modules, and 3) round modules utilized by harvesters with on-board module builders; all of these have different levels of packaging density. Cotton is harvested under widely varying conditions throughout the country and the moisture content of seed cotton at the point of containerization can be an important factor in the final quality of the crop. Seed cotton is being stored for increasing periods of time before being processed by cotton gins. The number of cotton gins in the U.S. has decreased while the production of cotton has increased. All cotton is harvested as it matures and the harvesting rate greatly exceeds the ginning rate. As a consequence of fewer gins, increased harvesting rates and increased quantities of cotton, the storage time of seed cotton prior to ginning has increased. It is hypothesized that the impact of varying densities, varying trash contents, and increased storage times prior to ginning is impacting the quality of the cotton lint and seed. The goal of this research is to quantify the impacts of these factors. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the effects of packaging seed cotton from any of the three different harvesting methods into varying types of storage as a function of differing moisture content and increased storage time. Results are indicated in terms of quality of both the fiber and the seed of ginned samples, as well as how the quality changes affect the value of the processed cotton. Samples of seed cotton are sealed in plastic containers for up to three months at varying levels of moisture, density, and trash content. Temperature and oxygen levels are monitored during storage. Samples are ginned and cottonseed and fiber are analyzed. The results of this research indicate that density does not affect the final quality of the lint and seed harvested. Increased moisture contents have a negative effect on both the quality and the value of the seed cotton, and this effect becomes more pronounced as the length of storage increases.

Time trends and advertising presentation of information security advertisement

Weng, Wen-di 08 October 2004 (has links)
There are many studies about information security, but merely limited in the technologic and managerial fields. The purpose of this research is to discover information security advertisement in two ways ¡V the time trends and the advertising presentation. The research uses the content analysis with four variances ¡V time, category of products, type of enterprises, and targeted customers to analyze information security advertisement on computer magazines in the past ten years (1994~2003). According to research findings, there are some obvious changes in category of product, appeal strategy, amount of advertising message, topic reply and brand image in time trends. On the other hand, picture-headline effect, proportion structure, appeal strategy, presentation type, and brand image have apparent differences in advertising presentation. It can be concluded to eight findings from research results: 1.¡¨product¡¨ is always the main marketing objective; 2.advertising presentation is from ration to emotion; 3.follow the ¡§product life period¡¨ and ¡§advertising strategy¡¨ rule; 4.the amount of topic reply has gradually decreased; 5.different advertising purposes have different advertising presentation; 6.¡§expression of safety¡¨ is primary objective; 7.huge amounts of image usage; 8.the amount of advertising messages in information security advertisement is more than other types of advertisements.

The Content Analysis of Journal of Human Resource Management and Determinants of Acceptance of an Article

Chang, Po-Chien 23 August 2005 (has links)
This study includes six dimensions: article¡¦s attributions, author¡¦s traits, the identities of censors, the opinions of censors, the results of judgment and the processes of publication; uses content analysis to describe the present editorial situation of Journal of Human Resource Management (JHRM) and constructs the regression model by the logistic regression using four dimensions except the results of judgment and the processes of publication. The findings indicate two sides, the first one is on the content analysis: it has a significant difference between the year of contribution and references, article¡¦s issue, total pages, number of authors, days from submission to acceptance, days from submission to publication; and different academic title also affect the article¡¦s research method. The second one is on the effect factor of the article is published or not: article¡¦s attributions and author¡¦s traits, including 16 variables, have no any effects on the acceptance of an article, but the identities of censors and the opinions of censors, including 8 variables, do have significant effects on it. The important factors to the article are the number of censors, the application of entirety, the innovation of deliverance and the completeness of viewpoint and as the order for influencing the acceptance of an article.
