<p>The purpose of this study is to examine the theme of destiny in conflict with free will as it is presented in the theatre of Jean Cocteau. The first chapter deals with this theme as it appears in Cocteau's adaptations of Greek myth; the second chapter treats the dramatist!s use of the boulevard tradition in the presentation of this subject in a modern context, and chapter three considers its manifestation in Cocteau's historical plays. <p>The thesis examines in detail the nature of the contes paysans written by Maupassant and the literary techniques which made this section the most successful in his work. The paper indicates and explains Maupassant's particular affection for the Norman peasant, then examines the different aspects of the peasant's character and the role he plays in the stories. An analysis is also made of other features of the peasant tales, such as the language, the decor, and the social events, while illustrating throughout the literary function of these elements. In the Conclusion, a comparison with other writers serves to demonstrate the reasons for the particular success of the contes paysans.</p> / Master of Arts (MA)

<p>The purpose of this paper is to define Sartre's concept of bad faith in L'Etre et le Néant and to apply this definition to Sartre's early plays. It is also hoped that the study will show the relevance of the theory of bad faith to our daily practice. Les Séquestrés d'Altona has been omitted both because of its complexity and because it would entail an examination of the Critique de la Raison Dialectique which is not possible in the scope of this thesis. The point of view in this thesis is considered by some to be biased but it is the opinion of the author that objectivity is not possible and that Marxism, which is the outlook of Sartre himself, is the correct one.</p> / Master of Arts (MA)
