The Theme of Victim in the Works of Eugène IonescoDeverson, Myrna January 1978 (has links)

The reality of man's existence became a great source of inspiration in Eugène Ionesco's theatre. The aim of this thesis is to examine Ionesco's ideas on the victimization of man in his universe. In our presentation of his concepts, examples will be shown from various works (La Leçon, La Cantatrice Chauve, Les Chaises, Jacques ou La Soumission, Rhinocéros, Victimes du Devoir, Amédeé ou Comment - s'en débarrasser, and Jeux de Massacre) in order to fully examine his particular vision of life. Such a study aims at bringing about a realization and understanding of the conditions man is exposed to in the universe.
/ Master of Arts (MA)

Priscian's De laude Anastasii imperatorisCoyne, Patricia 04 1900 (has links)

Imperil panegyrics have often been dismissed as mere flattery of no literary merit and limited historical value. In recent years, increasing interest in the study if the history of the later Roman empire has led scholars and to take a fresh look at panegyrics and to examine their role in the society of the late antique world. Detailed studies of individual works are necessary for this examination and reevaluation of imperial panegyric. This thesis, consisting of translation and commentary, provides such a study, the first in English, of the Delaude Anastasii impreratoris, a verse panegyric of the emperor Anastasius (491-518) written in Constantinople by the sixth century author Priscian, best known for his work on Latin grammar.

Set in its literary context, the panegyric illustrates one stage in the Christianization of a secular literary genre. To praise his Christian emperor and justify his rule in terms of Christian political theory, the poet abandons the epic style and mythological allusions used by his predecessors in Latin verse panegyric. Instead, Priscian versifies the outline for imperial panegyric provided in rhetorical handbooks. Literary traditions, however, dictates that his language and poetic adornment be neutral, acceptable to both pagan and Christian, and as a result there are few overtly Christian elements in the poem.

In the panegyric; Priscian creates the image of an emperor chosen by God and protected by His might. The skillful development of and emphasis on such an image suggest that historically the poem should be dates to the later part of Anastasius' reign when religious controversy and armed rebellion threatened his throne. More specifically the panegyrist's portrait of the emperor, combined with reference to historical events, indicates that the poem may date to the year 513, the first year of the rebellion of Vitalian. Set in this context, the poem was probably aimed at dissident elements within Anastasius' court and administration.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Fracture and fermentation: a journey in clay - two paths, two identities, one individualHan, Joo Young (Grace) 29 July 2016 (has links)
My Master of Fine Art research explores the fracturing and fermentation that occurs when two cultural identities first collide, then begin to merge, one traditionally steeped in collective thinking and community – Korea, and the other with a focus on the individual and autonomy – Canada. I was trained as an artist in South Korea and learned from masters who had decades of experience in the field of traditional ceramics. Until I moved to Canada, my work focused on Korean traditional ceramics and its history. However, my desire to be recognized as an individual artist instead of another anonymous traditional ceramic artist has grown tremendously since I restarted my journey as a ceramic artist here in Canada. After practicing in the ceramics field in North America for two years, I am starting to understand what the differences are between Korea, where I received my initial education, and Canada, my adopted culture. The struggles I have experienced as an artist from outside of this new culture made me think about myself as an individual. I am now starting to discover my own unique voice in my work with clay. / October 2016

A large discourse concerning algebra : John Wallis's 1685 'Treatise of algebra'Stedall, Jacqueline Anne January 2000 (has links)
'A treatise of algebra historical and practical' (London 1685) by John Wallis (1616-1703) was the first full length history of algebra. In four hundred pages Wallis explored the development of algebra from its appearances in Classical, Islamic and medieval cultures to the modern forms that had evolved by the end of the seventeenth century. Wallis dwelt especially on the work of his countrymen and contemporaries, Oughtred, Harriot, Pell, Brouncker and Newton, and on his own contribution to the emergence of algebra as the common language of mathematics. This thesis explores why and how A treatise of algebra was written, and the sources Wallis used. It begins by analysing Wallis's account of mathematical learning in medieval England, never previously investigated. In his researches on the origins and spread of the numeral system Wallis was at his best as a historian, and initiated many modern historiographical techniques. His summary of algebra in Renaissance Europe was less detailed, but for Wallis this part of the story set the scene for the English flowering that was to be his main theme. The influence of Oughtred's Clavis on Wallis and his contemporaries, and Wallis's efforts to promote the book, are explored in detail. Wallis's controversial account of Harriot's algebra is also examined and it is argued that it was better founded than has sometimes been supposed and that Wallis had direct access to Harriot's algebra through Pell. Many other chapters of A treatise of algebra contain mathematics that can be linked or traced to Pell, a hitherto unsuspected secret of the book. The later chapters of the thesis, like the final part of A treatise of algebra, explore Wallis's Arithmetica infinitorum and the work which arose from it up to Newton's foundation of modern analysis, and include a discussion of Brouncker's treatment of the number challenges set by Fermat. The thesis ends with a summary of contemporary and later reactions to A treatise of algebra and an assessment of Wallis's view of algebra and its history.

Cultural Evolution and Advertising Strategies : Which future for TV commercials?Bonesire, Thomas, Bouvy, François January 2009 (has links)

This thesis deals with TV advertising strategies, namely adaptation and standardization, and with the impact of cultural homogenization on these strategies. Indeed, globalization generates the convergence of world cultures and especially of young Europeans’ cultures. This relative convergence in people’s habits, behaviour and values could allow advertisers to use more standardized advertisements without losing too much impact on the consumer. The use of standardized advertisements is interesting to create a uniform brand image, appeal to cross-border segments and, of course, make economies of scale. This thesis surveys young Europeans, represented by Swedes and Belgians, to examine their degree of cultural homogenization, i.e., if they are culturally similar enough for standardization to be effective on this group. Moreover, it compares the impact of both adapted and standardized commercials on this young European audience. This study comes to two main findings. First, the young Swedish and Belgian cultures have similarities, which standardized commercials can exploit, but also differences. This shows that we can speak about cultures’ convergence but not about a complete homogenization. Second, standardization seems to be effective - as effective as adaptation - in its appeal to young Swedes and Belgians. This shows that, given its advantages, standardization is certainly the most adequate method for targeting a young European audience. The findings for Sweden and Belgium should be valid for the whole EU. The thesis also discusses the generalization of the findings to the rest of the world and other age ranges as well as the future of commercials.
