Síntese de estruturas 3D de nanotubos de carbono verticalmente alinhados, dopados e não-dopados, decorados com nanopartículas de óxido de titânio, sua caracterização microestrutural e de propriedades fotocatalíticas e elétricas

Acauan, Luiz Henrique January 2015 (has links)
In this work, we propose an experimental procedure for fabrication of 3D carbon nanotubes structures anchored with titanium oxide particles, on a copper substrate. We correlate three different types of CNTs from this structure (pristine, doped with nitrogen and treated with plasma) with the deposition of TiO2 by ALD. It was yet suggested, three applications for this structure. The synthesis of vertically aligned CNTs, doped and undoped, was optimized among several synthesis parameters such as temperature, oxidizing agent and specially, the catalyst film. The introduction of defects in NTCP by oxidative plasma treatment was evaluated against variables such as pressure, power and exposure time. The association between the defects from these three types of CNTs and the deposition of TiO2 by ALD was assessed by transmission microscopy, Raman, XPS and TGA. The experimental procedure for assembling the 3D structure had been studied step by step by various techniques, from chemical and imaging, up to empirical testing. In the final structure, the photocatalytic properties were evaluated by the organic dye decomposition in an aqueous medium, capacitive properties by cyclic voltammetry and field emission properties through electric field versus emission current curves and F-N diagram. Was obtained high quality NTCs with a height up to 0.5mm with regular diameters and number of walls. On these, it was introduced, in a controllable way, a high amount of defects without jeopardizing the forest structure. The NTCNx forest reach a 0,3nm height with a 2% nitrogen concentration in its typical structure “bamboo-like”. The results show the relation between the type of defect and the deposition of TiO2 by ALD, forming crystalline particles over the NTCP and NTCNx, in this last evenly distributed with uniform size, while on the NTCOx is is formed a dense TiO2 layer shaped by large monocrystalline grains. By process such as heat treatments and CNT transferring was achieved a 3d structure composed by a graphitic carbon layer and VACNTs over a cupper substrate, without disturb the forest assembly. The samples showed electron field emission effect, but its assessment for quantitative analysis was limited to technical issues. The photocatalysis tests showed that immobilization of TiO2 on a dense support prevents the dye degradation in an aqueous medium. The NTCNx shown higher capacitance than NTCP, and the TiO2 was apparently ineffective for improvement of this property.

Characterization of chemical and mechanical properties of polymer based nanocomposites

Wafy, Tamer January 2013 (has links)
One of the most significant issues in nanocomposite performance is improving the dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in thermosetting or thermoplastic polymers in order to gain good mechanical properties. Several studies have investigated the fabrication of nanocomposites based on carbon nanotubes and analysed properties, but there is still insufficient data on their structure-property relationships. This thesis has investigated the central importance of stress transfer Raman studies in epoxy composites reinforced with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to elucidate the reinforcing ability of the CNTs in an epoxy matrix. This project was undertaken to synthesise and characterize MWCNTs and determine the effect of different weight fractions of untreated MWCNTs on the stress transfer efficiency at the MWCNTS / epoxy interface and on the stiffness of the thermomechanical properties of the MWCNTS / epoxy composites. It was undertaken to assess the stress transfer efficiency at the CNT / epoxy interface and at the inter-walls of the CNTs with tensile deformation and with cyclic loading.Optimized conditions of the injection chemical vapour deposition method (CVD), such as long injection times were applied to produce MWCNTs with a high yield, high aspect ratio and well-defined G' Raman peak. The morphology and size of CNTs were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) while their thermal stability was examined by Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Both Raman spectroscopy and mechanical testing (static and dynamic) were utilized in this study. The Raman spectroscopy research consisted of following the G'-band frequency and linewidth as well as the intensity of radial breathing modes (RBMs) during tensile deformation. The stress-induced Raman shifts in the nanocomposites have been shown to be controlled by the number of carbon nanolayers. A theory has been developed to determine and simulate the stress transfer efficiency parameter, (k_i) for MWCNTs. Tensile tests and dynamic mechanical testing were used to assess the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. The most obvious finding to be drawn from the present study is that the reinforcement of the epoxy resin with different loadings of MWCNTs is useful, but the best reinforcement was at low loadings of MWCNTs. One of the more significant findings to emerge from this study is that (k_i) between the inner walls of the DWCNTs and MWCNTs are quite similar (~0.7), which suggest that (k_i) may be similar for all CVD MWCNTs and DWCNTs. The second major finding was that there were RBM intensity variations for the SWCNTs and DWCNTs in the hot-cured epoxy composites and that for the DWCNTs both the inner and outer nanotube walls are stressed during deformation

High magnetic field effects in low-dimensional carbon nanostructures

Alexander-Webber, Jack A. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis describes studies of graphene, single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and InSb. Optical and electronic measurements probe the effects of high magnetic fields on these low-dimensional systems. Chapter 1 introduces a theoretical description and background behind the materials and physical phenomena studied in this work. The structure and unique properties of carbon nano-materials are described. The experimental methods used in this thesis are described in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 describes magnetotransport measurements on InSb/AlInSb heterostructures revealing that the large energy gaps, and extremely high mobility, associated with this system leads to exceptionally well defined quantum Hall plateaux for both even (Landau level) and odd (spin-split) filling factors. Even higher cyclotron energy gaps are expected in graphene. Chapter 4 reveals that due to a combination of large cyclotron energy gaps and fast electron-phonon energy loss rates, the quantum Hall effect (QHE) in graphene can be observed to unprecedented current densities (43 A/m) and temperatures (> 45 K). The behaviour of epitaxial graphene grown on silicon carbide in the quantum Hall regime is shown to be characterised by a strongly magnetic field dependent carrier density due to charge transfer from surface donor states in the substrate. Chapter 5 shows that polymer wrapping of SWNTs can achieve high quality purified samples. Individual SWNTs were probed using micro-photoluminescence measurements in magnetic fields up to 30 T. The combination of high magnetic fields and high spectral and spatial resolution allowed a detailed study of exciton fine structure. High intensity laser irradiation is shown to induce bound excitons in pristine tubes. The optical properties of a number of tubes are dominated by defect sites which may be imaged along the tube using the magnetic brightening of dark excitons associated with such defects.

Novel nanocarbon based sensor platforms

Oikonomou, Antonios January 2015 (has links)
In the present thesis, research work to tackle challenges such as large-scale integration, selectivity and low efficiency around different types of nanocarbon based sensors is performed. The findings of these studies are given in the form of peer-reviewed publications and conclusions with future recommendations proposed as a summary. The work focuses on three key sensors types, gas sensors, biosensors and photodetectors. The first key aspect is dielectrophoretic (DEP) deposition of nitrogen doped single-walled carbon nanotubes (N-SWCNTs) and it is used as a route to large-scale assembly of increased reactivity, and thus selectivity, gas sensors. Furthermore, suspended SWCNTs and few layer graphene (FLG) devices are fabricated through a novel process which results in increased surface area transducers and low resistance SWCNTs based devices. Moreover, biosensors face similar challenges to gas sensors with the addition that their selectivity needs to be engineered through the formation of a biomimetic interface due to the nature of the analytes they are destined to investigate. Non-covalent functionalization of graphene using self-assembled phospholipid membranes delivered in a controlled and precise manner by dip-pen nanolithography (DPN) was demonstrated together with a high-speed fabrication process of bioassays onto patterned CVD graphene using a parallel tips system. Lastly, for the case of photodetectors, a SWCNT – nanoplasmonic system is proposed as a solution to the major issue of low quantum efficiency in low dimensionality materials. First, the performance of various geometries and arrangements of Au nanoparticles is explored by transferring a micromechanically exfoliated graphene flake onto them and studying the Raman enhancement that arises due to uncoupled and coupled near-fields. An increase of graphene Raman signal of 103 was observed for the areas suspended between two closely spaced dimers as a result of strong near field coupling when the polarisation of the incident light is parallel to the nanostructures axis. A large-scale integration of SWCNTs positioned in between the dimers using DEP is performed as a demonstration of the scalability of the system.
