Fracture path transitions in peels tests of medium carbon steel spot welds

Fracture path transition, from interfacial fracture to a pulled button, in peel tests of spot welds in SAE 1039 steel was evaluated to determine the controlling material properties. Welds were tested in the as welded condition and after tempering at various temperatures to develop a range of hardness and strength in the weld metal. Two transitions were found, from complete interfacial fracture to partial interfacial and from partial interfacial fracture to a pulled button. Samples tempered at less than 350 °C exhibited complete interfacial fracture while those tempered at 500 °C or higher pulled full buttons. Each transition was accompanied by a large increase in the energy absorbed during fracture. Both partial and complete interfacial fracture occurred by intergranular fracture along prior austenite grain boundaries. Optical microscopy utilizing a tint etch indicated that austenite existed as films on prior austenite grain boundaries of samples tempered at less than 500 °C and TEM confirmed that these films were austenite. Weld metal toughness was found to control the fracture path. If fracture initiation was delayed until the applied load caused plastic deformation of the coupons pulled button fracture occurred. Fracture initiation prior to plastic deformation of the coupons resulted in interfacial or partial interfacial fractures. A small secondary hardening peak was observed in samples tempered at 450 °C. Secondary hardening, which normally results from alloy carbide precipitation, was due to AlN precipitation in this aluminum killed plain carbon steel. / Ph. D.

Abstract Industrial ecology provides the scientific and technological understanding upon which the increased environmental, economic and social efficiencies necessary to progress towards sustainability can be based. Industrial ecosystem is the creation of synergies between various industries, agriculture, and communities to profitably convert waste into valuable products or feedstock. Copper and nickel flash smelters developed by Outokumpu form the heart of the Harjavalta industrial ecosystem, which consists of thirteen different firms. The ideas found in Harjavalta industrial ecosystem consideration can be applied to carbon steelmaking and other related industry sectors to add product efficiency, improve energy utilization and start new local business, when different firms can concentrate to their own core know-how areas. When planning to add the amount of recycled material in steel production the waste oxides from steel industry, pyrite roasting residues and slags from the copper and nickel smelters are rich iron sources. When processing dusts, scales and sludge in the separate treatment plant, the main thing is that the primary production of the steel plant is not disturbed. The big problem when using secondary iron raw materials will be the contamination of steel by tramp elements similar to scrap based steel manufacture. Today's industry is facing significant change from the process related environmental thinking towards product based environmental thinking seen in the EU product policy. This will mean need for the research covering raw material acquisition, production, products, in-use phase, recycling and disposal. Steel has very unique properties, which can be improved, if steel manufacturers can concentrate on their core know-how area. The essential difference between the technical and natural systems is the human control. Based on the experiences of Harjavalta industrial ecosystem the occupational safety and accident security risk prevention should be included into the metaphor of industrial ecology. If we consider the human control in global scale the future development will depend on the ethical decisions made by humankind. / Tiivistelmä Teollisessa ekologiassa pyritään aine- ja energiavirtojen tutkimiseen siten, että jäljitellään luontoa lopullisena tavoitteena jätevirtojen eliminointi tai ainakin minimointi, jolloin se on osa kestävälle kehitykselle välttämätöntä ekologista, taloudellista ja sosiaalista toimintaa. Teollinen ekosysteemi on teollisuuslaitosten ja yhteiskunnan sekä mahdollisesti maatalouden synerginen liittymä, jonka avulla integroidaan tuotannon ja kulutuksen lohkot yhteen tavoitteena vähentää sekä raaka-aineiden kulutusta että ympäristöpäästöjä. Harjavallan teollinen ekosysteemi on syntynyt ja kehittynyt Outokummun kehittämän liekkisulatusmenetelmään perustuvien kupari- ja nikkelisulattojen ympärille. Harjavallan Suurteollisuuspuistosta saatuja ajatuksia ja kokemuksia voidaan soveltaa luovasti hiiliteräksen valmistukseen ja muihin vastaaviin teollisuuden haaroihin. Eri yritysten keskittyessä omalle ydinosaamisalueelleen voidaan parantaa raaka-aine- ja energiatehokkuutta sekä perustaa uutta paikallista teollisuutta. Terästeollisuuden hyödyntämättömät jäteoksidit, pyriitin pasuttamisesta saatavat pasutteet sekä nikkelin ja kuparin valmistuksen kuonat ovat potentiaalisia uusioraaka-aineita. Uusioraaka-aineille on kehitettävä hiiliteräksen valmistuksen pääprosessin viereen omat käsittelyratkaisut, sillä muuten rautapohjaisten poisteiden kierrätyksen ekologiset ja taloudelliset säästöt saatettaisiin menettää pääprosessin tuottavuuden laskuna. Ongelmallista on myös teräksen laatua haittaavien harmeaineiden kumuloituminen teräkseen, mitä tapahtuu myös käytettäessä romua uusioraaka-aineena. Kestävää kehitystä tavoiteltaessa täydennetään EU:n perinteistä prosessi- ja tuotantoyksikköperusteista ympäristölainsäädäntöä tuotelähtöisellä ympäristölainsäädännöllä. Säädöksissä huomioidaan laajemmin koko tuotteen elinkaari, jolloin tutkimuksen on katettava raaka-aineen hankinta, tuotanto, tuotteet, käyttö ja käytöstä poistoon liittyvä kierrätys tai sijoittaminen takaisin luontoon. Teräksen ainutkertaisia ominaisuuksia voidaan entisestään parantaa, jos teräksen valmistajat saavat keskittyä omalle ydinosaamisalueelleen. Teknisen järjestelmän sisältä löytyy aina ihminen suorittamassa tietoisen ohjauksen, mitä ei luonnonjärjestelmissä löydy. Harjavallan Suurteollisuuspuistosta saatujen kokemusten perusteella voidaan todeta, että työturvallisuus ja teollisuusonnettomuuksia ehkäisevä turvallisuustyö on otettava teollisen ekologian viitekehykseen. Jos tarkastellaan ihmisen vaikutusta globaalissa viitekehyksessä, voidaan todeta, että ihmisen vaikutus riippuu tulevaisuudessa tehtävistä eettisistä päätöksistä ja päätösten edellyttämistä toimenpiteistä.

Intenzivna plastična deformacija u procesima višefaznog sabijanja materijala / Severe Plastic Deformation in Material Multi-stage Upsetting Processes

<p>Predstavljena je nova metoda intenzivne plastične deformacije &ndash; višefazno sabijanje V-alatom. Koristeći ovu metodu, sabijanjem u osamnaest faza, unapređene su mehaničke osobine niskougljeničnog čelika Č.1221 &ndash; tvrdoća, čvrstoća i deformabilnost. Za ispitivanje mikrostrukture korišćeni su svetlosni, skening i transmisioni mikroskop. Prosečna veličina kristalnog zrna početnog materijala od 19 mikrometara je smanjena na 250 nanometara nakon dvanaest faza sabijanja. Nakon osamnaest faza sabijanja na čelu uzorka ostvarena je ukupna deformacija u iznosu od 3,38.</p> / <p>A new severe plastic deformation method has been presented - multistage upsetting by V-shape dies. By using this method, in eighteen upsetting stages, mechanical propreties (hardness, strenght and formability) of C15E low carbon steel has been improved. For microstructure analysis light, scanning and transmission microscopes have been employed. Initial average grain size of 19 &mu;m has been reduced to 250 nm after twelve upsetting stages. After eighteen upsetting stages, total effective deformation at the sample forehead of 3,38 has been obtained.</p>

Flow accelerated preferential weld corrosion of X65 steel in brine

Preferential weld corrosion (PWC) remains a major operational challenge that jeopardizes the integrity of oil and gas production facilities. It is the selective dissolution of metal associated with welds, such that the weld metal (WM) and / or the adjacent heat-affected zone (HAZ) corrode rather than the parent metal (PM). Corrosion inhibition is conventionally used to mitigate this problem however several indications suggest that some corrosion inhibitors may increase PWC. Furthermore, it is not possible to detect systems that are susceptible to PWC and or to understand the apparent ineffectiveness of some corrosion inhibitors at high flow rates. Consequently, the aim of this research is to assess the suitability of submerged jet impingement method to study flow accelerated preferential weld corrosion, which is critical to safe and economic operations of offshore oil and gas facilities. In this research, a submerged jet-impingement flow loop was used to investigate corrosion control of X65 steel weldment in flowing brine, saturated with carbon dioxide at 1 bar, and containing a typical oilfield corrosion inhibitor. A novel jet-impingement target was constructed from samples of parent material, heat affected zone and weld metal, and subjected to flowing brine at velocities up to 10 ms- 1 , to give a range of hydrodynamic conditions from stagnation to high turbulence. The galvanic currents between the electrodes in each hydrodynamic zone were recorded using zero-resistance ammeters and their self-corrosion rates were measured using the linear polarisation technique. At low flow rates, the galvanic currents were small and in some cases the weld metal and heat affected zone were partially protected by the sacrificial corrosion of the parent material. However, at higher flow rates the galvanic currents increased but some current reversals were observed, leading to accelerated corrosion of the weld region. The most severe corrosion occurred when oxygen was deliberately admitted into the flow loop to simulate typical oilfield conditions. The results are explained in terms of the selective removal of the inhibitor film from different regions of the weldment at high flow rates and the corrosion mechanism in the presence of oxygen is discussed.

[pt] O tratamento de águas de resfriamento normalmente é feito com a adição de cloro, porém este produto apresenta algumas desvantagens em sua aplicação. Como alternativa ao cloro, algumas indústrias no Brasil e no exterior estão começando a utilizar outros biocidas, dentre estes o peróxido de hidrogênio, um poderoso oxidante que apresenta forte ação biocida. O objetivo deste trabalho foi comparar a eficiência do cloro e do peróxido de hidrogênio como biocidas em diferentes condições, através de testes em água da torre de resfriamento de uma indústria siderúrgica localizada no Rio de Janeiro. A contaminação microbiológica desta água foi medida sem a adição dos biocidas e com a adição de cloro e peróxido de hidrogênio, permitindo assim comparar o desempenho destas substâncias no combate aos grupos bacterianos presentes na amostra. Foi realizado também um estudo sobre o efeito corrosivo destas substâncias através de testes de corrosão em aço carbono 1020, que permitiram avaliar a taxa de corrosão por perda de massa provocada pela aplicação destes produtos na água. Os resultados mostraram que o peróxido de hidrogênio possui uma ação biocida satisfatória para aplicações em águas de resfriamento. Foi constatado que o efeito biocida do peróxido de hidrogênio é mais limitado do que o cloro e que sua eficiência depende do tempo de contato e pode ser afetada pela presença de impurezas dissolvidas na água. Os ensaios de corrosão revelaram que o peróxido de hidrogênio provoca um efeito corrosivo comparável ao do cloro no material testado. / [en] Cooling water treatment generally is made with the addition of chlorine, although it´s application has some disadvantages. There is an active development in Brazil and other countries to use alternative chemical disinfectants in place of chlorine, such as hydrogen peroxide, a powerful oxidant which is known for its high biocidal efficiency. The aim of this research is to study the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide as a disinfectant compared to chlorine in different operational conditions. The experiments were carried out using an water sample from a cooling water system of a steelmaking plant in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The microbial contamination of this water sample was measured without adding any kind of disinfectant. After that, water sample was treated by adding hydrogen peroxide and chlorine, in order to compare and evaluate the efficiency of the two biocides to control bacterial growth in water. Besides microbiological tests, experiments were conducted to compare the degree of corrosion caused by the addition of hydrogen peroxide and chlorine in water. The experimental methodology employed 1020 carbon steel specimens and corrosion rates were measured by weight loss determination after the period of exposure. The results showed that the application of hydrogen peroxide leads to satisfactory bacterial control. However, compared to chlorine, hydrogen peroxide is a rather poor disinfectant. The efficiency of hydrogen peroxide depends on reaction time and it is affected by dissolved polluants in water. Evaluation of corrosion rates showed that hydrogen peroxide causes basically the same corrosion rates than chlorine.

O processo de conformação de chapas planas, estampagem, consiste na obtenção de peças conforme o projeto do processo e do produto. Faz-se necessária uma margem de segurança para que as variações de processo e do material possam ser absorvidas e o sucesso seja alcançado no processo de produção do componente. O presente trabalho mostra aspectos de estampabilidade de uma chapa de aço de baixo teor de carbono, o material mais utilizado no processo de estampagem. Estes aspectos são descritos e demonstrados como influenciam no processo de estampagem. No caso prático apresentado, evidencia-se que com a aplicação dos conhecimentos científicos de comportamento mecânico do material obtém-se uma melhoria no desempenho do processo e, conseqüentemente, na redução de custos e no aumento de competitividade. Como objetivo principal, tem o presente trabalho estudar a influência da redução a frio de acabamento do processo de relaminação no coeficiente de encruamento e mostrar como este estudo teve participação na solução e aplicação de uma peça-exemplo. Conseqüentemente há como objetivos secundários o estudo da influencia do tamanho de grão no coeficiente de encruamento, o desenvolvimento da textura cristalográfica antes e após a conformação da peça-exemplo e demonstrar a importância da utilização do método de elementos finitos no processo de conformação por estampagem para determinação dos tipos de conformação predominante no processo. Para realização do trabalho foram utilizados dois aços de baixo teor de carbono com composição química semelhantes porem com processos de fabricação diferenciados. Atenção especial foi dada a redução aplicada na laminação de acabamento de ambos os aços, através do uso de medidores de espessura e redução através de raios-X. Os aços foram caracterizados antes da conformação da peça-exemplo quanto a orientação cristalográfica através de difração de raios-X e EBSD, quanto as propriedades mecânicas através de ensaios mecânicos de tração e quanto a microestrutura e tamanho de grão através de metalografia. Foi realizada uma simulação de estampagem da peça-exemplo através de elementos finitos afim de determinar o tipo de conformação predominante na região mais solicitada da peça-exemplo. A peça exemplo foi conformada na pratica e caracterizada a distribuição das deformações através da medições da rede circulo previamente impressa na superfície da chapa na região mais solicitada conforme previamente determinado através da simulação. A orientação cristalográfica da região mais solicitada também foi caracterizada. Os resultados mostram a influencia de uma pequena variação na redução, 0,73% e 0,34%, aplicada na laminação de acabamento no coeficiente de encruamento. Para confirmação de que a redução aplicada foi a principal influenciadora no resultado o coeficiente de encruamento foi calculado através de equações disponíveis na literatura que correlacionam composição e tamanho de grão com o coeficiente de encruamento. A textura preferencial dos dois aços também foi avaliada através de figuras de função de orientação da distribuição e o comportamento dos dois aços foi relativamente semelhante, onde o aço com melhor desempenho demonstrou um aumento na componente {223} também conhecida como &#947;'. O estudo através de elementos finitos mostra que região mais solicitada da peça tem conformação predominada por estiramento. Por fim é mostrada a melhor distribuição das deformações na peça-exemplo produzida com aço de maior coeficiente de encruamento. Concluindo o trabalho permitiu a avaliação da influencia da redução aplicada na laminação de acabamento de aços de baixo teor de carbono nas propriedades mecânicas do aço e também o resultado deste comportamento mecânico na peça-exemplo adotada.Também permitiu avaliar a evolução da textura cristalográfica dos dois aços escolhidos antes e após a conformação da peça-exemplo. / The forming process of plain sheets, stamping, consists on the obtainment of parts according to the project of the process and the product. A safety margin becomes necessary so that the process variations and of the material can be absorbed and the success is reached in the process of production of the component. The present paper shows aspects of formability of a steel sheet of low carbon content, the most used material in the stamping process. These aspects are described and demonstrated how they influence the stamping process. In the presented case, it is proven that with the application of the scientific knowledge of mechanical behavior of the material an improvement in the performance of the process is reached and, consequently, the reduction of costs and the increase of competitiveness. As main objective, the present work study the influence of the cold reduction applied on skin pass of the cold rolling process on the strain hardening coefficient and to show how this study had participated on the solution and application of an part. Consequently it has as secondary objective the study of influences of the size of grain in the coefficient of strain hardening, the development of texture before and after forming of the part and to demonstrate the importance of the use of the method of finite elements in the forming process for determination of the predominant types of forming in the stamping process. For accomplishment of this paper two steel of low carbon content had been used with similar chemical composition but with differentiated rolling processes of manufacture. Special attention was given to the reduction applied in the skin pass of both steel, through the use of measurers of thickness and reduction through x-ray. The steel had been characterized before the stamping of the part above crystallographic texture through x-ray diffraction and EBSD, above mechanical properties through mechanical tensile tests and above microstructure and size of grain through metallography. A simulation of stamping process of the part through finite elements was carried out with the objective of determine the type of predominant forming in the most requested region of the part. The part was formed in mechanical presses and characterized the distribution of the deformations through the measurements circle grids, previously printed in the surface of the sheet, in the region most requested as previously determined through the simulation. The crystallographic orientation of the most requested region was also characterized. The results show influence of a small variation in the rolling reduction, 0.73% and 0.34%, applied in the skin pass on the strain hardening coefficient. For confirmation that the pplied skin pass was the main influence in the strain hardening coefficient result, was calculated hrough available equations in literature that correlate composition and grain size with the strain hardening coefficient. The preferential texture of two steel was also evaluated through figures of orientation function distribution and the behavior of two steel was relatively similar, where the steel with better performance demonstrated an increase in the {223} component also known as &#947;'. The study through finite elements shows that the more requested region of the part has forming predominated for stretching. Finally the best distribution of the deformations in the part produced with steel of higher coefficient of train hardening is shown. Concluding the work allowed the evaluation of influences of the skin pass on the rolling of steel of low carbon content in the mechanical properties of the steel and the result of this mechanical behavior in the adopted part. Also it allowed to evaluate the evolution of the crystallographic texture of two steel chosen before and after.

Considerações sobre o atrito para processos de forjamento a frio através do ensaio de compressão do anel

São realizadas análises teóricas e experimentais do atrito nos processos de forjamento a frio, através do ensaio de compressão do anel. Os modelos de atrito de Amonton-Coulomb (μ), atrito interfacial (m) e de Levanov (f) são investigados com auxílio de softwares comerciais de simulação de processos de forjamento. Diferentes condições de lubrificação foram aplicadas para o aço baixa liga 16MnCr5 e a liga de alumínio AA6351 nas condições recozido e encruado. O atrito foi analisado, utilizando os softwares MSC.Superforge e Qform, em função dos resultados obtidos e as condições de lubrificação e estado do material. Valores paramétricos do atrito adquiridos através de correlação teórico-experimental são condizentes com a literatura, indicando a relação do atrito com o material de trabalho, inclusive com seu grau de encruamento. Os modelos de atrito m e f apresentaram maior sensibilidade com relação ao estado do material. / Experimental and theoretical analyses of friction in cold forging process are evaluated by means of the ring compression test. Friction models from Amonton- Coulomb (μ), interfacial friction (m) and Levanov’s model (f) are investigated by aid of numerical simulation software. Different lubricants are applied for low carbon steel alloy 16MnCr5 under annealed and work-hardened conditions. Friction is analyzed by means of lubricant and material conditions using MSC.Superforge and Qform numerical simulation softwares. Acquired frictional parameter values obtained by theoretical-experimental correlation agree with literature, showing friction’s relationship with workpiece material and its hardening level. Friction models m and f presented better sensitivity when concerning the material’s hardening level.

Surface Modifications of Steels to Improve Corrosion Resistance in Sulfidizing-Oxidizing Environments

Industrial and power generation processes employ units like boilers and gasifiers to burn sulfur containing fuels to produce steam and syn gas (H2 and CO), which can generate electricity using turbines and fuel cells. These units often operate under environments containing gases such as H2S, SO2, O2 etc, which can attack the metallic structure and impose serious problems of corrosion. Corrosion control in high temperature sulfur bearing environments is a challenging problem requiring information on local gaseous species at the surface of alloy and mechanisms of degradation in these environments. Coatings have proved to be a better alternative for improving corrosion resistance without compromising the bulk mechanical properties. Changes in process conditions may result in thermal and/or environment cycling between oxidizing and sulfidizing environments at the alloy surface, which can damage the protective scale formed on the alloy surface, leading to increase in corrosion rates. Objective of this study was to understand the effect of fluctuating environments on corrosion kinetics of carbon steels and develop diffusion based coatings to mitigate the high temperatures corrosion under these conditions. More specifically, the focus was : (1) to characterize the local gaseous environments at the surface of alloys in boilers; (2) optimizing diffusion coatings parameters for carbon steel; (3)understand the underlying failure mechanisms in cyclic environments; (4) to improve aluminide coating behavior by co-deposition of reactive elements such as Yttrium and Hafnium; (5) to formulate a plausible mechanism of coating growth and effects of alloying elements on corrosion; and (6) to understand the spallation behavior of scale by measuring stresses in the scales. The understanding of coating mechanism and effects of fluctuating gaseous environments provides information for designing materials with more reliable performance. The study also investigates the mechanism behind the effect of REs on scale adhesion and sulfidation behavior. Thus, the present work will have a broad impact on the field of materials and coatings selection for high temperature industrial environments such as boilers and gasifiers, and provides information on RE-modified aluminized coatings on carbon steel as an alternative for the use of bulk superalloys under high temperature sulfur bearing environments.

Analysis Of Warm Forging Process

Forging is a metal forming process commonly used in industry. Forging process is strongly affected by the process temperature. In hot forging process, a wide range of materials can be used and even complex geometries can be formed. However in cold forging, only low carbon steels as ferrous material with simple geometries can be forged and high capacity forging machinery is required. Warm forging compromise the advantages and disadvantages of hot and cold forging processes. In warm forging process, a product having better tolerances can be produced compared to hot forging process and a large range of materials can be forged compared to cold forging process. In this study, forging of a particular part which is being produced by hot forging at 1200&deg / C for automotive industry and have been made of 1020 carbon steel, is analyzed by the finite volume analysis software for a temperature range of 850-1200&deg / C. Experimental study has been conducted for the same temperature range in a forging company. A good agreement for the results has been observed.

Friction models from Amonton- Coulomb (μ), interfacial friction (m) and Levanov’s model (f) are investigated by aid of numerical simulation software. Different lubricants are applied for low carbon steel alloy 16MnCr5 under annealed and work-hardened conditions. Friction is analyzed by means of lubricant and material conditions using MSC.Superforge and Qform numerical simulation softwares. Acquired frictional parameter values obtained by theoretical-experimental correlation agree with literature, showing friction’s relationship with workpiece material and its hardening level. Friction models m and f presented better sensitivity when concerning the material’s hardening level.
