This prelate stood out in the religious and political stages of Brazil and Latin America during middle and late 20th century. The archbishop was active during Brazilian Military Dictatorship (1964-1985). Even in this radicalization period, he managed to dialogue with many sections of society and Catholic Church, becoming a moderator of social and political conflicts. He also stimulated the changes that Catholic Church was passing through during 1950's; these changes were legitimated by Second Vatican Ecumenical Council (1962-1965). D. Avelar was an important Latin American moderniser bishop and presided the Conference of Latin American Bishops, held in 1968, that marked Latin American Catholic Church history / Esta tese é uma biografia do Cardeal Dom Avelar Brandão Vilela (1912-1986). Este prelado se destacou no cenário religioso e político do Brasil e da América Latina durante a segunda metade do século XX. O arcebispo atuou muito tempo durante uma Ditadura Militar (1964-1985). Mesmo neste momento de radicalização, ele procurou dialogar com os vários setores da sociedade e da Igreja Católica se tornando um moderador dos conflitos sociais e políticos. Ele também estimulou as mudanças que a Igreja Católica estava passando durante a década de 1950, que foram legitimadas pelo Concílio Ecumênico do Vaticano II (1962-1965). D. Avelar foi um importante bispo modernizador latino-americano e presidiu a II Conferência Episcopal Latino Americana, em 1968, que marcou a história da Igreja Católica Latino-americana
