Traduire la métafiction dans Dressing Up for the Carnival de Carol Shields

Fournier-Lévêque, Élise 27 March 2014 (has links)

Writing (fictional) lives: the relationship between biography and fiction in the work of Carol Shields

Stafford, Amy 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the intersections between biography and fiction in three novels and one biography by Carol Shields: Small Ceremonies, Swann, The Stone Diaries, and Jane Austen. By writing about biography and biographers in each novel, Carol Shields foregrounds the subject of biography and emphasizes its reliance on imagination and creative interpretation. At the same time, she stresses the deficiencies in the factual records of Jane Austen's life in her biography. Although biography is considered to be the more factual of the two genres, Shields establishes that only fiction has the power to portray people's inner lives, and that certain truths are therefore accessible only through fiction. Shields is especially interested in using fiction to recover the life stories of women, which have often been lost from historical record. / English

Creating absence to acknowledge presence : relational subjectivity and postmodernism in Carol Shieldss 'The Stone Diaries'

Winquist, Martin Edward 24 August 2009
This paper explores the relationship between postmodernist discourses and feminist discourses, asking, firstly, whether or not feminist political action is possible within a postmodernist theoretical climate that scrutinizes the construction of universalizing group identities, and, secondly, how political action might be undertaken in such a theoretical climate. I contend that Carol Shields, reflecting the postmodernist ideology of Jean-François Lyotard and Patricia Waugh, creates Daisy Goodwill Fletts absence in The Stone Diaries. This absence, in turn, acts to acknowledge the gaps in knowledge that exist within self-legitimating grand narratives. It demonstrates that Daisys performance of these grand narratives, particularly heteronormativity, necessarily obstructs her voice and, thereby, marginalizes her ability to act politically within that narrative. The Stone Diaries, then, calls for a plural public space by exposing what remains unknownwomens lives and narrativeswithin the current public space.

Out of the realm of immanence : women's work and transcendence in the novels of Carol Shields

Guenther, Bethany Ruth 25 September 2008
Carol Shields has not always been acknowledged as a feminist thinker by scholars, but an examination of womens work and art in her novels shows how her novels employ the feminist theories of Simon de Beauvoir and Betty Friedan in the creation of her own feminist philosophy. De Beauvoirs ideas on transcendence and immanence find expression in Shieldss novels, A Fairly Conventional Woman, The Stone Diaries, and Unless, as her female characters use work (both domestic and artistic) to transcend powerlessness.
