In 1994 the U.S. Navy resurrected a base in Everett, Washington and commissioned it as Naval Station Everett (NS Everett), the new homeport for six Naval vessels. Prior to 1994 the base had seen primary use as the homeport for a number of vessels during World War II. In the early 1940s Piers Delta and Echo were constructed to berth aircraft carriers and other warships. Piers Delta and Echo are 560 feet and 578 feet, respectively, and 46 feet wide. They are constructed out of pier decking and pile caps on timber piles. Naval vessels currently assigned to NS Everett berth at new piers on the base, while Piers Delta and Echo berth the small craft that support the larger vessels. Electo-optic characterization of ZnS:Tb ACTFEL devices for probing the hot electron distributionStreicher, Keone R. 12 July 1994 (has links)
In this report, the optical characteristics of ZnS:Tb AC driven thin-film
electroluminescent devices are evaluated. Luminescence at low and room temperature
under a constant phosphor field is recorded in order to probe the hot electron energy
distribution. Samples fabricated by atomic layer epitaxy and by sputter deposition are
investigated and their differences and similarities evaluated. The ALE sample exhibits a
drastic increase in luminescence at low temperature, while the sputtered sample displays a
decrease in luminescence at low temperature. The reduction of optical phonon scattering
and nonradiative transition rates at low temperature are believed to be responsible for
these changes. Differences between ALE and sputtered samples are due to the different
fabrication methods. The approach suggested by Krupka in 1972 of determining the hot
electron energy distribution by taking the ratio intensities of two luminescent transitions
from different upper states in Tb�����, is shown to be inaccurate due to the possible
nonradiative transitions taking place. The Tb����� impact excitation quantum yield at a
wavelength of 489 nm is measured and is shown to agree with Monte Carlo simulations.
Saturation occurs due to the increase in band-to-band impact ionization at high phosphor

United States navy fleet problems and the development of carrier aviation, 1929-1933Wadle, Ryan David 01 November 2005 (has links)
The U.S. Navy first took official notice of aviation in 1910, but its development
of carrier aviation lagged behind Great Britain??s until the 1920s. The first American
aircraft carrier, the Langley, commissioned in 1919, provided the Navy with a valuable
platform to explore the potential uses of carrier aviation, but was usually limited to
scouting and fleet air defense in the U.S. Navy??s annual interwar exercises called fleet
problems.
This began to change in 1929 with the introduction of the carriers Lexington and
Saratoga in Fleet Problem IX. After this exercise, which included a raid by aircraft from
the Saratoga that ??destroyed?? the Pacific side of the Panama Canal, the carriers were
assigned a wider variety of roles over the next five years of exercises. During this time,
the carriers gained their independence from the battle line, which the smaller and slower
Langley had been unable to do. Reflecting the advanced capabilities of the new carriers,
the fleet problems conducted during Admiral William Veazie Pratt??s tenure as Chief of
Naval Operations, 1930-1933, began to test the employment of the new carriers as the
centerpiece of one of the opposing fleets within the exercises. The Lexington and
Saratoga were used offensively during these exercises, employing their aircraft to sink surface ships, though not battleships, and successfully strike targets ashore. The carriers
became successful in spite of the unreliability of early 1930s carrier aircraft, particularly
the torpedo bombers, that could carry heavy payloads.
Lessons learned from the Lexington and Saratoga Fleet Problems IX through XIV
influenced the design of the next generation of American aircraft carriers, the Yorktownclass,
which were authorized in 1933. These new carriers were faster and much larger
than the carrier Ranger, commissioned in 1934 and designed before the Lexington and
Saratoga began participating in the exercises. Features incorporated into the Yorktownclass
based on operational experience included the reduced need for large surface
batteries because of the use of escort vessels, the emphasis of armoring against shellfire
over aerial bombs and torpedoes, and the capability to launch large numbers of aircraft
quickly.

Liposomes are small phospholipid vesicles that have been widely investigated as drug carriers for the delivery of therapeutic agents. A variety of liposome formulations are presently under clinical trial exploration, while others have already been approved for clinical use. The aim of this study was to optimize liposome uptake into bacterial cells. Both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria were used in the study as well as Candida albicans.Response surface methodology (RSM) using a central composite design (CCD) model was used to optimize liposomal formulations of carboxyfluorescien (CF) for each of the three microbes, and also the three microbes in combination namely; Staphylococcus aureus (Sa), Escherichia coli (Ec) and Candida albicans (Ca). Percentage of CF encapsulated and CF increase in Uptake were investigated with respect to two independent variables that were, cholesterol (CHOL) and stearylamine (SA) content. Design Expert 8 was used for the purpose of finding the combination of independent variables that would yield an optimal formulation for each microbe and the three microbes in combination. The model selected by the software managed to reasonably correlate the predicted models to the experimental data. Encapsulation of carboxyfluorescien (CF) into a liposome formulation enhanced its uptake by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli as well as Candida albicans. This was evident in the increase in CF uptake when the uptake rate of free CF was compared with that of liposomal CF.

Statistics South Africa’s (SSA) research focuses on road freight carriers for reward and excludes the data on private (not for reward) carriers. The CSIR in 2004 published a report entitled Second Annual State of Logistics Survey for South Africa. The focus of this study was on land freight transport, i.e. road and rail. Maritime, air and pipeline volumes were not included in this study’s scope. Therefore, the number of studies investigating the private (not for reward) road freight market and even the total freight market in South Africa is limited to the above-mentioned two sources and the Rand Afrikaans University’s (RAU) 1991-study (published in 1993), entitled Freight Transport Survey. / Prof. J.
