To achieve this goal presented the history of confession since its inception, its historical evolution and its relationship with spiritual counseling. Secondly, presented the sacramental confession to the light of catholic theology, emphasizing the basic attitudes that the confessor should adopt. Then, I tried to understand the spiritual counseling and confession as aid relationship that approximate the relationship between counselor and client proposal by the personcentered approach for psychological counseling. In conclusion, I present the gains that the knowledge developed in the area of counseling can bring to the work of spiritual counselor and confessor / O objetivo desta dissertação foi refletir sobre o aconselhamento espiritual e a confissão sacramental na perspectiva do aconselhamento psicológico desenvolvido na abordagem centrada na pessoa. Para atingir essa meta apresentei a história da confissão desde seu surgimento, sua evolução histórica e sua relação com o aconselhamento espiritual. Num segundo momento, abordei a confissão sacramental à luz da teologia católica, salientando as atitudes básicas que o confessor deve adotar. Em seguida, busquei compreender o aconselhamento espiritual e a confissão como relações de ajuda que se aproximam à relação entre conselheiro e cliente, proposta pela abordagem centrada na pessoa para o aconselhamento psicológico. Na conclusão, apresento os ganhos que os conhecimentos desenvolvidos na área do aconselhamento psicológico podem trazer para o trabalho do conselheiro espiritual e do confessor

Le modèle du couple actuel, uni par l’amour et désireux d’avoir des enfants, qu’il soit marié ou non, devient pour nos contemporains un vrai « lieu spirituel ». Comment, en chrétien, penser et accompagner le nouveau paradigme du « couple électif », quand les notions ainsi associées évoluent ? La spiritualité en Occident repose sur des héritages croisés et combinés : le dualisme gréco-romain ; une certaine focalisation sur la rédemption, et le péché de la chair ; une quête moderne visant à être soi, vrai, équilibré ; et la vision incarnée, communautaire et trinitaire de Vatican II, trop peu connue. La construction de la conjugalité entre amour, mariage, voire unions moins formelles, inspire vers 1930 une spiritualité conjugale » catholique, reconnue dans Gaudium et Spes. Or, la spiritualité, au sens large du terme, aide tout couple à tenir bon : d’où la relance d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire. Comment, donc, définir la « spiritualité coélective » qui anime les « couples électifs », en prenant en compte à la fois le pluralisme moderne et le cadre chrétien ? Aider l’amour fécond à s’accomplir contribue à humaniser la société, jusqu’à l’ouvrir davantage aux enjeux planétaires. / Based on the partners’ choice for each other, their loving commitment and desire to start a family, the couple relationship, whether in formal marriage or not, has become for many of our contemporaries a real locus spiritualis, the seat and source of a spirituality. How to understand, from a Christian point of view, this new paradigm and foster it while the concepts associated with it are continuously evolving? Spirituality in Occidental history has a diverse and layered heritage: Greco-Roman dualism; a strong focus on the ‘sin of the flesh’; a modern quest for self-realisation and authenticity; and, although less known, an understanding of spirituality since Vatican II which is strongly incarnational, community-oriented and Trinitarian.Shaping a model of conjugal life in between intimate love and institutional marriage, couples in the 1930’s start referring to a Catholic “marital spirituality” which will be fully acknowledged only by Gaudium et Spes. Later generations will realize that spirituality, understood in a broad sense, helps couples to become resilient – an insight which will be at the basis of multi-disciplinary research. But how to conceive in today’s pluralistic society of a spirituality of couple life, or ‘co-elective spirituality’, that at the same time enhances the flourishing of contemporary couples and yet does not forsake its Christian frame of reference? The universal “law of giving” and the concepts of “promise” and “covenant” which equip for a “shared intimacy” appear to be central concepts which both help to shape the communion of ‘elective couples’ and lend themselves to be lived in a specifically Christian way. Here a pneumatology takes shape which is to be understood as a “circulation of gifts”. Helping fruitful love to flourish thus contributes not only to humanizing society but also to raise awareness for global challenges.

The aim of the thesis is to present the portait of forming, development and forms of the Czech catholic liturgics from the standpoint of original works written in the Czech language by Czech authors in the territory of the Czech lands prior to the Second Vatican Council. On the basis of the bibliography of Czech liturgics (licentiate thesis), the project of the developmental tendency of this theological discipline is demonstrated, specifically in two independent courses - clerical liturgics and lay liturgics. The thesis further focuses on educational institutions and the position of liturgics within the study curriculum. It presents the history of the Czech catholic liturgics as a component of the history of the Czech catholic theology and in the context of general and Czech ecclesiastical history. An avant-garde theological generation : the Fourviere Jesuits from 1920 to 1950 and the 'Crise Entre-Deux-Guerres'

This thesis seeks to offer a clearer understanding of the Jesuit theologians and philosophers who comprised the group known the 'Fourvière Jesuits'. Led by Henri de Lubac and Jean Daniélou, they formed part of the nouvelle théologie, an influential French reform movement that flourished from the 1930s until its suppression in 1950. After identifying a certain lacuna in the secondary literature, this thesis attempts to remedy certain historical deficiencies by constructing a history both sensitive to the wider intellectual, political, economic, and cultural milieu of the French interwar crisis, and that establishes continuity with the Modernist crisis and the First World War. Chapter One examines the modern French avant-garde generations that have shaped intellectual and political thought in France, providing context for a historical narrative of the Fourvière Jesuits more sensitive to the wider influences of French culture. This historical narrative of the Fourvière Jesuits follows four stages. Chapter Two examines the influential older generations that flourished from 1893 to 1914, such as the Dreyfus generation, the generation of Catholic Modernists, and two generations of older Jesuits, which were instrumental in the Fourvière Jesuits' development. Chapter Three explores the influence of the First World War and the years of the 1920s, during which the Jesuits were in religious and intellectual formation, relying heavily on unpublished letters and documents from the Jesuits archives in Paris (Vanves). Chapter Four analyses the crises of the 1930s, the emergence of the Fourvière Jesuits' wider generation, and their participation in the intellectual thirst for revolution. Chapter Five examines the decade of the 1940s, which saw the rise to prominence of the members of the generation of 1930, who, thanks to their participation in the resistance, emerged from the Second World War, with significant influence on the postwar French intellectual milieu.

Bible and theology at work : the creative energy of Dorothy L. Sayers' 'The Man Born to be King'

This study centres on the biblical and theological work behind Dorothy L. Sayers' 12-part play-cycle, The Man Born to be King, aired on the BBC between 1941-42. Investigation begins by testing various unsubstantiated statements by biographers and scholars through a line-by-line analysis of the scripts, the results of which can be found in two large tables of information about how Sayers used each pericope in the Gospels (Appendix A) and a list of every known biblical reference within the play-cycle (Appendix C). Sayers' reported privileging of the Gospel of John gives way to evidence that Synoptic content outweighs Johannine by sheer bulk of material while preference is clearly given to stories that appear in both John and the Synoptics. Sayers' reported avoidance of the Authorized Version gives way to limited but consistent use of the AV for the narrator, for Old Testament quotations, and a special use of the Coverdale Psalms from the Book of Common Prayer. A study of Sayers' six secondary sources shows significant influence upon historic details and characterisation. By covering new ground through in-depth script and source analysis, these studies reveal, expand upon, and often contradict previous assumptions regarding Sayers' sources and working process. In the area of theological studies, investigation begins with Sayers' own claim that she had no original theology—that she merely re-stated the Church's teaching. First, Sayers' identity as an Anglo-Catholic is explored to understand what she means by ‘Catholic' and ‘the Church'. Having thus located Sayers within a particular tradition, Sayers' Christology (building upon her emphasis on the Creed) and Eschatology (building upon her chosen theme of the Kingship of Christ) within the plays are considered within their broader context of early twentieth-century Anglo-Catholic and wider theology. Sayers' theological originality is then proposed in relation to how she brought theology to life in dramatic form.

The Trinity and the religions : an assessment of Gavin D'Costa's Trinitarian theology of religions with reference to the patristic Trinitarianism of Basil of Caesarea

As a key contributor to the current discussion of the Catholic theology of religions, Gavin D'Costa's writings represent a consistent attempt to utilize the resources of the doctrine of the Trinity to address a number of issues regarding the theological significance and function of religions in the salvific plan of God. The aim of this thesis is to examine critically his Trinitarian theology of religions through the lens of a main proponent of patristic theology, Basil of Caesarea, and through a historical-systematic study, address the question of whether his underlying Trinitarianism is consonant with classical Trinitarian theology. After a discussion of Vatican II and post-Conciliar sources, the main contours of D'Costa's theology are highlighted through an interpretive grid of particularity/universality (Christology/Pneumatology) with a second-order universality/particularity. Despite his distancing from the three-fold typology of exclusivism-inclusivism-pluralism, we analyzed that much of his theology continues to fall within the category of traditional inclusivism, particularly since his recent proposal of the limbo of the Fathers contained serious difficulties pertaining to his intention to maintain a singular OT Judaism-Christianity relationship. Next, we examined the main features of Basilian Trinitarianism, and proposed that three major themes are of relevance for a comparative analysis with D'Costa's theology, namely, (1) the doctrines of divine simplicity and inseparable operations, (2) the enlightening work of the Spirit, and (3) the theology of baptism and theosis. Throughout the discussion, in recognition that Basil's thought is part of the patristic theological matrix of his time, we will also reference the writings of other Church Fathers, including Gregory of Nyssa, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Augustine. We concluded that while in Basil's theology, economy, relationality and ethics are intricately woven into each other, D'Costa's system, despite its significant merits, was at risk of disaffiliating the connections between the three.

Johann Adam Moehler: The Method of Historical Theology

This thesis is a study of Johann Adam Moehler's critical theology as an achievement in the nineteenth century's quest for a historical methodology. As the first Catholic theologian to apply a critical-historical analysis to the development of doctrine, Moehler is important as both the theologian and as a German historian. As the theologian, Moehler's efforts to discover the essential meaning of Christian doctrine led him to conclude that doctrine develops within a human context of experience, namely, the Catholic Church. This development of doctrine is possible given the organic nature of the Christian community and its relationship to the divine. It is only the subjective form which doctrine assumes at different stages in life of the Church that is susceptible to change. The objective truth of Christian principles remains immutable. As the historian, Moehler applied a critical method, symbolism, to his theological subject matter. By an objective investigation of the symbols of Protestantism and Catholicism, he felt that the essential differences and the meanings of the respective confessions could be properly analyzed. History, as the proper framework in which to acquire the objective meaning of the Catholic experience, is the common denominator between Christ and his institution, the Church, and remains the only means of justifying its continued existence. This study of Moehler's ideas begins with a discussion of the historical context in which Moehler lived and by which he was influenced. This discussion highlights the German Aufklärung and its reaction to the French Enlightenment, the Romantic Movement as it uniquely developed in Germany and the rise of the Tübingen School as the locus of romantic Catholic theology in the early nineteenth century. The second chapter relates the details of Moehler's biography, particularly as a member of the Tübingen theological faculty. In the third chapter Moehler's critical theology is discussed as it reflects his historical consciousness and his methodology. The fourth chapter consists of a review of the literature written about Moehler as well as some interesting interpretations of his concepts and their consequences. Finally, the conclusion attempts to place Moehler in a perspective to his German philosophical heritage and to the historical theories of his time as a historical theologian.

The Flamekeeper : The Confessional Purgation of the Soul in the Poetry of Robert Lowell

This essay is a critical textual analysis of the poetry of Robert Lowell with focus on religious symbolism used in his work, and the Catholic theology which informed it. This results in a new, contrasting interpretation to the conventional view that he had abandoned his religious focus by mid-career, while accounting for his own assessment that he had not. Insights gained through this analysis, combined with those relating to Lowell’s personal history, reframe his confessional poetry while bolstering this claim.  Through this study, poems selected from Lord Weary’s Castle, The Mills of the Kavanaughs, Life Studies and For the Union Dead are reinterpreted in order to explore the consequences of what Lowell could have intended with this stylistic modification, and discover the religiosity that he claimed was hidden. Lowell’s confessional poetry up until 1964 is examined and recast as the anguished wails of a Catholic soul in Purgatory. This fresh approach to one of America’s finest twentieth-century poets provides a novel foundation for the reinterpretation of the entirety of Lowell’s professional oeuvre.

Ecclesiology of Antonín Salajka (1901-1975) The following work presents an ecclesiological analysis of the publication by prof. Antonín Salajka (1901-1975). In the first part, it submits the biography of the author. This author was the first czech catholic priest laureated in Pontifical Institute of Oriental Studies in Rome (in 1930). In the second part, it closely inteprets the very ecclesiology of the author itself. Salajka - theologist is introduced from several perspectives as well. First we supplied a suggestion for periodization of his scientific work. There we proposed two periods in congruence with a paradigm change of ecclesiastic-social circumstances, including changes of theological studies, which evidently affected our author's life and scientific work. The two proposed periods are: (1) 1930-1950, i.e. scientifically paramount and fundamental; (2) 1950-1975. Further, we introduced areas which fell under Salajka's interest: unionism, eastern christian churches and the problem of christian unification, eastern dogmatic theology, Church Slavonic, the study of christian East, dogmatic theology, so called theologia comparata, but also ecumenism, theological realisation, method in theology, fundamental theology, moral theology, last but not least pedagogical activity.
