: L'émergence du monde contemporain a soulevé plusieurs questions pour les études sur l'histoire de l'Église catholique romaine au Brésil et dans le monde. Depuis les premiers mouvements modernes de l'histoire, l'institution ecclésiastique a été menacée par de nouvelles forces émergentes, tant au niveau de son pouvoir temporel que de sa pensée théologique. Ainsi, durant l'histoire, le XIXe siècle a vu se dessiner deux manières d'interpréter les changements que connaissait le monde contemporain et qui se sont affrontées : la tendance libérale, qui estimait que l'Église devait s'ouvrir à la nouvelle conjoncture, et la tendance conservatrice qui considérait le nouveau monde avec une grande méfiance et défendit la discipline et la doctrine. Ces deux tendances ont eu un impact significatif sur l'Église brésilienne et ont provoqué des tensions au sein du clergé qui était partagé entre différentes perspectives de réflexion et de pastorale. Parmi les faits qui ont marqué l'histoire du catholicisme brésilien au XXe siècle, il y a le traditionalisme catholique qui fut particulièrement prégnant dans le diocèse de Campos (Brésil) qui s'est fait connaître notamment par la vision conservatrice de l'évêque diocésain Antonio de Castro Mayer. L'intransigeance avec laquelle il a rejeté les réformes conciliaires promues par Vatican II est au cœur de la problématique de cette thèse dont l'objectif est d'analyser et d'expliquer le rôle et l'importance de cet évêque au Brésil en tant qu'opposant à Vatican II. Pour ce faire, à travers une approche basée essentiellement sur la méthode historique, nous nous sommes penché successivement sur son parcours préconciliaire, sur son action au Concile, sur son rejet des principaux documents issus de cet événement et sur la crise diocésaine qui s'en est suivi en concluant qu'il fut le principal opposant brésilien à Vatican II. / : The emergence of the contemporary world has raised several questions for studies on the history of the Roman Catholic Church in Brazil and worldwide. Since the first modern movements in history, the ecclesiastical institution has been threatened by new emerging forces, both in terms of its temporal power and its theological thinking. In the course of history, the 19th century saw the emergence of two opposing interpretations of the changes taking place in the contemporary world: the liberal tendency, which felt that the Church should open up to the new situation, and the conservative tendency, which viewed the new world with great mistrust and defended discipline and doctrine. These two trends had a significant impact on the Brazilian Church, and led to tensions within the clergy, who were divided between different perspectives of reflection and pastoral care. Among the events that marked the history of Brazilian Catholicism in the 20th century was Catholic traditionalism, which was particularly prevalent in the diocese of Campos (Brazil), where the conservative vision of diocesan bishop Antonio de Castro Mayer made a name for itself. The intransigence with which he rejected the conciliar reforms promoted by Vatican II is at the heart of the problematic of this thesis, whose aim is to analyze and explain the role and importance of this bishop in Brazil as an opponent of Vatican II. To this end, using an approach based essentially on historical method, we have looked successively at his pre- conciliar career, his action at the Council, his rejection of the main documents resulting from this event and the diocesan crisis that followed, concluding that he was the main Brazilian opponent of Vatican II.
