The purpose of the research project was to try to get some insight into the actual operation and structure of what are commonly called alternative agencies. The project was viewed as an exploratory study, designed to try to understand if some of the commonly held assumptions about alternative agencies seemed to be reflected in actual practice. The research team's first task was to try to develop a working definition of an alternative agency.

Historians who study the history of charity in China note that the history of Chinese urban charity organizations may be documented from the late Ming dynasty. Nevertheless, they do not argue that from the late Ming, those organizations represented local interests in urban administration and the development of charity in the rural areas. On the other hand, historians who study village and town communities have noted that local organizations representing local interests were centered at temples and ancestral halls. However, the structure was destroyed by modernization and the establishment of nation state in modern China. Meanwhile, charity institutions took more significant roles in local society since late Qing. Therefore, is it possible that charity took over the position that had been occupied by religious sacrifice as the defining quality of local management? This study examines how practices and ideas of charity in modern times were adopted in local society from the bottom up. In order to have a substantial focus, this research takes charity institutions in Qianshan, Chungshan as case studies to examine how they adopted and practiced ideas of charity, how they preserved religious sacrifice under the background of modernization and anti-superstition movement in 1930s. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / 毛迪. / Thesis (M.Phil.) Strategic planning in small voluntary sector organisations in Edinburgh : a case study approach to preparing small charities to use strategic planning models and tools

Grant, Florence Elvira Hill January 2007 (has links)
This thesis is a case study of six organisations and two pilot organisations to investigate the implementation of strategic planning in small charitable organisations in the voluntary sector in Edinburgh. The case studies utilised semi-structured interviews, observations and questionnaires on multiple occasions over a two-year time period. The data collected provided insight into the financial management systems utilised by these organisations and the training level attained by the financial person of each of the organisations. The findings supported the concept that the more developed the training of the financial person, the more developed the level of planning attained and the more complex the funding arrangements accessed by that organisation become. The research also supported the position that the barriers to planning were the same barriers that have been previously noted in the literature as indigenous to the voluntary sector: time, money, resources, and communication. In addition, the research developed evidence to support a listing of characteristics which are indicative of when an organisation is ready to plan more strategically. These include such items as a teamwork approach, knowing the staff and their backgrounds, knowing and planning for the training needs of staff, supporting the staff, and developing in the staff the feeling that they can talk to their supervisor. The research also developed that there are certain general characteristics, such as being aware of changes in the law, having, and being perceived to have, fair and up to date policies and procedures as being indicative of an organisation which is ready for the changes intrinsic in the implementation of strategic planning models involving continuous improvement such as the EFQM Excellence Model®. Although the organisations are not opposed to planning in general and strategic planning in particular, the need for survival by conforming to the requirements of funders takes precedence over longer term planning. Part of the impetus for this behaviour is the evocative behaviour of supporting 'the cause' for which they were founded. Frequently in the voluntary sector, 'the cause' also involves working with vulnerable groups of people. The limited progress observed in their strategic planning indicated that the period of time available for observation was too short and the measurements needed to be taken too soon.

Investigation of governance in Scottish charities

Lambert, Victoria January 2011 (has links)
This thesis investigates governance in large Scottish charities. In particular, the focus is on internal aspects of governance, predominantly the functioning of the board. The influence of business on charities is also investigated through considering the impact of individuals with business expertise on the boards of charities. Charity governance in the Scottish context has been under-research, this thesis attempts to fill this research gap. A multi-method approach was employed, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative research. The study utilised a survey in the form of a selfcompletion questionnaire, and three case studies to examine governance in Scottish charities. Social construction provides the framework of the analysis. This thesis provides an insight into the functioning of the boards of Scottish charities, in-line with previous research in other countries, governance issues are apparent. However, in relation to the impact of business expertise in charities, there is evidence that business members of charitable boards make contributions to the governance of these organisations, and charities can gain considerable value from having outside specialists on the board.
