Patterns of innovation in the chemical industry

McCarthy, M. C. January 1971 (has links)
The analysis of innovation contained in this thesis differs considerably in both scope and aims from most analyses of innovation. It is important to discuss why the approach taken has been adopted, and to justify its usefulness. There is no absence of analyses of innovation and associated invention. Individual inventions have been examined, notedly by Jewkes and his co-authors (1); analyses have been made of innovation in selected industries, and this has been related to international trade in these industries (2); the detailed antecedents of individual technological innovations have been traced back in time, both for weapon systems and for civilian products (3); the spread of important new techniques, normally associated with large-scale capital investment, has been analysed (4). Much of this work has been done, either directly or indirectly, to answer specific questions of science policy, and these works have been influential factors in the formulation of science policy. The questions which may be answered by such approaches are important. Is money aimed at producing inventions (and, by implication at least, innovation) best invested in establishing large research centres, or in encouraging with suitable fiscal measures individual inventors (5)? What is the relationship between the concentration of an industry and its propensity to innovate? Should government finance be concentrated in closely targetted contracts, or in university research? What should the government attitude be towards industries, such as the pharmaceuticals industry, in which successful products enjoy what may appear super-normal profits while overall heavy research expenditure is incurred (6)?

Sintetiese metodes vir die regioselektiewe funksionalisering van monosakkariede

Swanepoel, Anna Dorathea 12 March 2014 (has links)
Ph.D. (Chemistry) / The aim of this study was the development of stereoselective routes for the asymmetric synthesis of chiral precursors of I1-deoxy-1l-thiaprostaglandins and albomysin di, using carbohydrates as chiral building blocks. A brief overview of known stereocontrolled routes for the synthesis of sulphur-containing monosaccharides and heterocyclic prostaglandin analogues is presented. Approaches to the stereocontrolled synthesis of I1-deoxy-11-thiaprostaglandins from Larabinose are described. Special topics in this part of the study include approaches to the preparation of chiral tetrahydrothiophenes. The 1,4-diol 5-0-benzoyl-3-deoxy-3-C-(carboxymethyl- 2,3-y-lactone)-L-lyxitol (146a), was identified as a possible chiral building block for the proposed route towards 11-thiaprostaglandins. New groups for the activation of the hydroxyl functions of the 1,4-diol in order to introduce the ring sulphur atom via a 1thiobenzyl ether, were investigated. The l,4-diol was subsequently transformed into a 1,4dimesylate and this compound proved to be the most suitable for the generation of the tetrahydrothiophene unit. This investigation resulted in an efficient synthesis of 11thiaprostaglandin precursors using glucose as a chiral building block. In the second part of the investigation, approaches to the stereoselective synthesis of a potential precursor for the synthesis of albomysin dr are described. An investigation of the selective acylation of acyclic pentoses are also presented. The aim of this study was the regioselective introduction of a leaving group, for example a tosylate, in acyclic derivatives of pentose without protecting any of the secondary hydroxyl groups. This strategy would make intramolecular cyclisations possible with a suitable nycleophile present on C-l. Some of the compounds in the pentose series investigated, furnished dibutyltin complexes which were regioselectively acylated in an efficient manner. Starting from L-arabinose an alternative strategy for the synthesis of a precursor for the synthesis of aIbomysin di is also given. The synthesis involved the preparation of 1-0-acetyl2,3, 5-tri-O-benzoyl-4-thio-xylofuranose, followed by conversion to the required nucleoside.

A market development program for small chemical companies

Ballance, Harry E. 15 November 2013 (has links)
Market development is that function of commercial chemical development which develops uses for products and makes the initial introductory sales for such uses. Large chemical companies have expanded their marketing activities through the use of market development departments. However, the information available for a complete market development study is widely scattered. By gathering this information into an organized program it may be used as a guide for small chemical companies in their marketing activities. / Master of Science

A study of efficiency and competitiveness in a chemicals manufacturing company (Chemplex Animal & Public Health).

Manyenga, Johannes. January 2006 (has links)
The study dwells on one of the few companies making animal and public health chemicals in Zimbabwe. It is fairly a new company and the industry is old globally even in Zimbabwe. Chemplex has a varied product range covering grain protection, insecticides, pesticides in addition to the animal chemicals. However, Chemplex's viability is under serious threat because the existing strategies are not competitive enough for global participation. The manufacturing of products has been scaled down due to critical shortage of foreign currency. The intent of this paper is to suggest that the use of a quantitative research methodology can inform today's decision-making managers in the animal and public health chemicals manufacturing company. While not claiming to be predictive, the research seeks to develop intelligent forecasts and strategic inclinations concerning what is possible while indicating strategies for working toward desired goals. In a time of accelerating change and globalization of markets, the methodology can help in revealing to managers how to cope successfully with uncertainty and move confidently into tomorrow. In that regard, a quantitative and case study approach will be implemented. The research has proposed ISO certification, strategic alliances, outsourcing and licensing agreements as recommendations that Chemplex should seriously consider. These have been identified as highly necessary given the global trends and Chemplex's competitive potential since manpower and facilities are greatly underutilized. Chemplex does not have all the necessary resources to embark on meaningful growth and expansion on its own at the moment. The foreign currency generation will be expected to improve under such strategies as well toenable Chemplex to compete independently in future. / Thesis (MBA)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, 2006.
