A saint in the empire : Mexico City's San Felipe de Jesus, 1597-1820Conover, Cornelius Burroughs, 1972- 15 October 2012 (has links)
Spanish monarchs ruled a global empire encompassing millions of colonial subjects for nearly three hundred years. One key factor in the longevity of the Spanish Empire was its skillful integration of elements from an even longer-lasting, centralized Institution--the Catholic Church. Through a focus on San Felipe de Jesús, a Mexico City-born saint, this dissertation analyzes the pious imperialism of the Spanish Empire in the Catholic missions of Japan, the politics of beatification in Rome and local devotions in Mexico City. Funded by Philip II, Spanish missionaries spread across the Atlantic and then to the Pacific. The mission of Spanish Franciscans in Japan including San Felipe exemplified the orthodox and expansionistic tendencies of this movement. The friars’ uncompromising zeal caused them to reject Japanese society and authority, something which led to their executions in 1597. Spanish subjects thrilled to the martyrs’ inspiring story and supported their beatification cause. The Spanish king, too, actively promoted new holy figures in Rome for political and pious reasons. During the seventeenth century, more than half of the new beatified or canonized holy figures came from the Spanish Empire, including the Nagasaki martyrs. As each new saint earned a feast in liturgy, worship in Spanish territories began to disseminate not only Catholic values, but also divine favor toward the Spanish Empire and its monarch. The liturgical schedule of colonial Mexico City shows that Spanish Catholicism projected both Church and Empire across the Atlantic. As the Catholic Church had found, cults to saints formed effective imperial ties because they could also attract and adapt. Civic and religious leaders in Mexico City molded the cult to San Felipe to express municipal pride, to assert the city’s place in the Spanish Empire and to commemorate its contributions to Catholicism. Devotions to saints, then, captured the potentially-divisive power of identity to reinforce Empire and Church. Pious imperialism worked well until Bourbon-era reforms distanced the Spanish monarch from the devotional culture in Mexico City and interrupted the mediating power of saints’ cults. During the period 1884-1925 Ethiopian-type schisms from mission churches
occurred for a number of reasons. Generalisations of these reasons have been
made by numerous authors. By generalising the causes of schism the particular
reasons why each independent church 1 eader 1 eft the mission church are
ignored. The thesis shows how each schism was due to unique circumstances in
the mission church as well as to factors, for example, the personal feelings
of the independent church leader. In each case there was a point of no return
when the founder of the independent church no longer felt he could accept the
status quo.
There were two government commissions that investigated the independent or
"separatist" churches during these years - the South African Native Affairs
Commission of 1903-1905 and the 1925 South African Native Affairs Commission
which investigated the "Separatist Churches". The testimony of the white
government officials and missionaries and the black church leaders has been
compared with the findings in the reports.
Four case studies are investigated to show how general causes of schism may
occur for a number of years until a reason, peculiar to the particular
independent church, manifests itself and leads to the formation of an
independent church. The case studies are the Ethiopian Church and related
independent groups, the independent churches which joined the African
Methodist Episcopal Church in 1896 with the Ethiopian Church but later left
to form their own churches, for example the Order of Ethiopia, schisms from
the Presbyterian Church during the 1890' s and the Independent Methodist

which there was little or no mission activity, the
Orthodox Church has experienced a revival of interest
in mission. This thesis is an examination of how
Orthodox theology and worldviews have affected Orthodox
mission methods, and account for some of the differences
between Orthodox methods and those of Western
Christians. A starting point for the study of the
Orthodox theology of mission is the ikon of the descent
of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, which shows the
apostles gathered in the upper room with the world in
their midst. Orthodox soteriology, which sees Christ as
the conqueror of evil and death, rather than as the
punisher of sin, has led Orthodox missionaries to have
a more open approach to other cultures. A historical
survey of ways in which the Orthodox Church grew in the
past includes martyrdom, mission and statecraft,
monastic mission, and in the 20th century, the missionary
significance of the Orthodox diaspora. Even in the
fallow period, however, there was mission in the sense
that various groups of people were drawn to Orthodoxy,
sometimes through the ministry of irregularly ordained
bishops. The collapse of communist regimes in the Second
World has created many new opportunities for
orthodox mission, but has also brought problems of
intra-Christian proselytism, nationalism and viole:1ce,
and schism and stagnation in those places. As the
Orthodox Church prepares to enter the 21st century, its
worldview, which has been less influenced by the modernity
of the West, may enable it to minister more

"Shedding their blood as the seed of faith": the Zambesi Mission Jesuits and ambivalence about modernityBischoff, Richard Karl 12 1900 (has links)
The study addresses from a sociocultural-historical, in particular a missiological and
medical perspective the question if Catholic hospitals in Matabeleland, affected by the
dramatic down-turn of Zimbabwe’s economy since 2000, did whatever they could to
continue offering quality services to their patients.
It starts with a portrayal of the emergence of secular modernity in the North-Atlantic
World, as regards its view of the world as solely governed by natural laws, and of
people as capable of taking destiny into their own hands, unperturbed by spiritual
forces. The question is explored how the Christian Occident could end up there,
following its development through the Middle Ages, and its expansion by missionary
activity, by preaching the Word, but also by military force.
Next, the achievements of pre-1900 Western medicine are examined, to identify if/how
missionaries in Africa could have benefited. The study describes how professional
medicine did not become part of the early Zambesi Mission, not because of its curative
shortcomings, but for spiritual reasons, insofar as the Jesuits did not follow the
European trend to let worldly well-being take the place of eternal salvation. Vis-à-vis
their other-than-modern view of life, suffering, and (self-)sacrifice, the promises of
medicine appeared just trivial.
Submissiveness to authority, both ecclesiastical and worldly, is identified as the core
principle that informed the Jesuits’ educational approach towards Africans in all their
efforts at conversions. The missionaries thereby colluded with colonialist thinking, in not
attempting to make their pupils grow into self-confident, independent thinkers in their
own right. In this educational tradition, grafted onto a pre-modern local culture, the study
finds the reason why Zimbabwean medical staff, as managers of their clinics or
hospitals, have shown little readiness to proactively prioritise the intrinsic needs of their
institutions and push for corrective measures, prepared even to challenge their
superiors when encountering aberrations in the health system, locally as well as higher
up.
The study asks if the Church could have opted for a different educational approach,
considering the prevailing socio-economic and cultural framework conditions; finally, which options present-day Zimbabweans have to choose from, regarding their country’s

Mennonite - Brethren - Church in Karaganda I Kasachstan from 1956 to 2000.
The existing socialism with its atheistical values affected adversely the lives of the Christians and
prevented them from missionary work. In spite of that mission was able to be practised.
Experienced preachers and teachers in the church prepared the missionary work by instructing the
Christians to be effective witnesses for the Lord. This was achieved by the training of young
preachers. regular pronouncements of the Gospel and the work with children and young persons.
The Christians retained this method until the middle of the 70ies when the regid laws concerning
the missionary work were mitigated. Commited brothers. young persons, preachers and singers
visited lonely Christians and churches in remote villages, had personal conversations with
unbelievers and organized evangelizations. Members ofthe church were sent out as missionaries to

This dissertation develops an exit strategy for missions, drawing upon the experience of the Wesleyan Church in Africa. This is approached in four sections: a literature review, a summary of Wesleyan mission work in Africa, a model for mission work that has been developed within the Wesleyan Church, and applications of the model. The model proposes five stages through which the work of missions progresses: the development of converts, disciples, pastors, leaders and partners. The fourth chapter includes a discussion of related models: the Three Eras of Missions and the Two Types of Missions. At the completion of the 5 Stages of Missions the establishment of a mature national church, fully engaged in international missions and international church leadership, has been achieved. This dissertation concludes that final departure may not be necessary for all missionaries. This documentary dissertation contributes to scholarly understanding
of the history of missionary endeavours in Natal and Zululand by making
accessible a carefully edited compilation of documents written by Norwegian
missionaries in those areas between 1844 and 1899. From thousands of
pertinent extant documents, the editor has selected a representative crosssection
of the most revealing letters and reports that Lutheran and other
missionaries sent to their sponsoring organisations and the related
periodicals. Each document has been translated from Norwegian into English,
suitably excised of superfluous material, and given a brief introduction.
Annotations explain theological jargon and identify people, places, and
phenomena to which the writers of these letters and reports referred. The
documents are divided into four chapters, each of which begins with an
introduction by the editor. An introductory chapter provides information
about the Norwegian missionaries in question, the general history of their
work, the nature of the correspondence, and the consequences of the failure
of many other historians of foreign rnissions in Southern Africa to avail
