A healthy and salubrious place : public health and city formOzonoff, Victoria Vespe January 1982 (has links)
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1982. / MICROFICHE COPY AVAILABLE IN ARCHIVES AND ROTCH. / Bibliography: leaves 189-202. / As cities grew larger and more complex at the end of the eighteenth century, they suffered new and more pressing public health problems. The responses to these problems had, in time, an effect on the environment that produced them. This thesis is an examination of the relationship between public health reforms and the urban environment. Public health reforms were stimulated by the perceived deterioration of health in the city. The nature of public health responses designed to cope with this problem was determined, in part, by medical theory, social reform movements, and the physical environment. This thesis examines the nature of these relationships, and their effect on the form of cities in America from the colonial period to the first decades of this century. Chapter one is an explanation of general problems created by the growth of cities and the consequent attempts to formulate a theory of city form. It is a general discussion of where public health ideas belong in this complex process. The subsequent chapters examine the influence of public health theory and practice on the urban environment in three different time periods. The last chapter shows how another change in public health theory resulted in the uncoupling of broad-based health concerns from urban designs, a characteristic of the twentieth century until recent years. / by Victoria Vespe Ozonoff. / M.S.

Paisagem cultural da rua para pedestres em centro urbano consolidado : o calçadão da Batista de Bauru /Boni, Débora Maria Svizzero. January 2018 (has links)
Abstract: The quality of the landscape of public spaces determines the uses and frequency of users. Science [non] fiction: science education through the performing artsHirson, Brett Sean 26 May 2015 (has links)
Education in South Africa is experiencing challenges of interest in its learners towards science and
mathematics within the primary and secondary phases of learning. The result of this failed interest is
represented by the amount of scarce skills present in the technology, ICT and engineering sectors,
resulting in a lack of research and development of current and future technologies. The solution to
this problem is to create a lateral approach through learners’ interests by using performance media
as a medium of instruction. This intervention is established as part of the University of the
Witwatersrand where it will serve as a crucible of research, exploration and education of science and
technology through cross-faculty co-operation. Using the University’s vast academic and educational
resources, this intervention will become a staging ground for new scientific and technological
development conveyed through a variety of performance mediums which will be presented to
learners, students and the general public.
Situated adjacent to the Parktown Education Campus, this facility is the beginning of planned
expansion by the University linking its various campuses through Braamfontein civic district. The site
has an important historical and heritage association with Johannesburg - through its heritage
landmarks - and by its use through the National Children’s Theatre. Whilst this has been a site for
performance art over the last two decades, the expansion and integration of this building will
continue this legacy into the future through the exploration of new and dynamic performance
mediums. / 2014 Thesis - M.Arch(Prof.)

Dynamics of industrial development in border towns : case studies of ThailandManeepong, Chuthatip, School of the Built Environment, UNSW January 2003 (has links)
This thesis examines the dynamics of industrial development in the areas where Thailand borders with neighbouring countries. It argues that the locational advantages approach 'one that focuses on social and economic connections in border towns, government investments, policy measures and the role of export-oriented multinational companies' is not necessarily an appropriate approach. An investigation is conducted to find out to what extent the locational advantages approach applies to Thai border towns. An assessment of the government role in promoting and managing industrial development has also been undertaken to identify the success of this industrial decentralisation scheme. Other factors that contribute to industrial development are also examined. The thesis uses a comparative case study approach, comparing sponsored and non-sponsored towns, and presents four case studies of border towns in Thailand, bordering Myanmar and Laos. This research method provides a better assessment than an internal assessment of government programmes would. The results show that the dynamics of industrial development in Thai border towns is better explained by the production network approach emphasising the embeddedness of small and medium sized local manufacturing industries. The entrepreneurship and social networks of entrepreneurs promote the emergence and growth of industrial development. Horizontal industrial relationships promote flexible operations and compensate for limited access and resources in border towns. In addition, a border location does not by itself stimulate economic link with the neighbouring country because negative perception and regulatory barriers to the crossing of borders hinder mutual cooperation. Due to the discrepancy between government assumptions programmes and the dynamics of industrial development, the survey shows that the impacts of government investments on industrial development are marginal. The thesis concludes that the applicability of the locational advantages approach for industrial development in Thai border towns is limited and that the policy of the government and international agencies should be diverse and should consider other approaches such as a production network approach. Similarly, government programmes should accommodate the needs of small and medium sized manufacturing industries. The role of local government and the private sectors in minimising barriers to the crossing of borders should also be considered.
