How does greenspace design affect attractiveness to birds and humans in urban area?

Liu, Chengyi January 2020 (has links)
City greenspaces are often considered as refuges for wildlife living in the urban area.At the same time, the original function of greenspaces is providing relaxing places forpeople. So, to provide suitable area for both humans and wildlife in the city, it isimportant to learn about the preference to city greenspace design by humans and birds. In this study, I selected 45 city greenspaces from Stockholm and Uppsala, Sweden, andused opportunistic citizen science bird records, environmental parameters ofgreenspaces analyzed by GIS and an online social survey to compare the preference ofbirds (using bird diversity as a proxy for preference) and humans living in urban areawith respect to certain environmental parameters of city greenspaces. I found that bothpeople and birds prefer greenspaces with large area, and some water area in or aroundgreenspace. I also found some conflicting preferences in that people more preferredgreenspaces near the city center but bird diversity was higher in greenspaces fartherfrom the city center. These results might bring new mind for urban ecology researchand ecofriendly city greenspace design. Greenspaces with larger area and water areawould be preferred by both people and birds.

Design, favela e ativismos: experiências e aprendizados com a Redes da Maré no Rio de Janeiro / Design, favela, and activism: experiences and learning with \'Redes da Mare\' in Rio de Janeiro.

Montuori, Bruna Ferreira 12 April 2018 (has links)
The community initiatives in informal urban settlements and metropolitan suburban areas have been resisting questions of social vulnerability by way of culture, art, education and other practices that result in social engagement and spatial transformation for decades. In that sense this study chose as its subject the action of a collective of cultural activists - active in the axis \"Culture and Art\", \"Territorial Development\" and \"Communication\" - of the non-governmental organization Redes da Maré. This community initiative acts since 2007 in diverse spaces of collective use in Complexo da Maré, a grouping of seventeen favelas located in the north side (Zona Norte) of the city of Rio de Janeiro. This practice-led research study has the objective of introducing relevant aspects that emerged from three phases of collaboration executed in Complexo da Maré in the past two years of research. From the day to day exchange of knowledge and living experiences of the design researcher partnering with coordinators, staff and participants of the initiative, the research was supported by social participatory design, codesign and design anthropology approaches. Focusing on forms of improvisation and modes of cooperation present in actions that permeate in the initiative\'s activities, this research study sought to generate learning and reflections for brazilian designers and architects with the purpose of opening pathways for co-creation processes in the urban space by way of procedural, experimental and collaborative approaches. Furthermore, the investigation aims to give relevance to popular and suburban practices in the metropolitan spaces of collective use, and in parallel enrich the field of action of informal and urban design.

Designing School Community: Changing Inner-City Middle School Culture Through Interiors

Ramey, Rachel A 01 January 2018 (has links)
While the knowledge of disrepair in inner-city schools is fairly common, the impact that school facilities are having on students and faculty is not as widely known. More recently, the closing of inner city schools has greatly increased across the United States; Reduction in public school enrollment from 2006-2013: Detroit -63%, Cleveland -32%, Indianapolis -27%, D.C. -23%, L.A. -23%,etc. (Journey For Justice Alliance,2014). Due to budget cuts, threat of school closings from poor facility conditions, large class size, and pressure to raise test scores, inner city schools struggle to keep teachers (Journey For Justice Alliance,2014). Poor teacher retention along with a lack in care for educational facilities has created a toxic environment for inner-city students. Although there are many reasons that inner-city schools suffer, negativity within school culture seems to be a common denominator within many of these problems. With larger population percentages of minority, economically disadvantaged and disabled students, difficulties arise in communicating student-to-student and teacher-to-student (Bellwether Education Partner, 2016). The question becomes, how does one design a space to provide comfort, safety and communication in order to foster healthy relationships? This research will inform the design of a middle school that focuses on community and communication. The goal will be to design a school where flexibility and team work is made easier through furniture and layout solutions in order to foster growth and respect for students and teachers.
