Prostorová a sociální konfigurace na lokální úrovni. čtvrt Raval (Barcelona), vyhodnocení v relaci k modelu kompaktního města / Physical-spatial and social configuration at neighborhood level, the Raval (Barcelona), an urban evaluation according with the Compact City Model

Azofeifa Valverde, Edwin Javier January 2014 (has links)
Physical-spatial and social configuration at neighborhood level, the Raval (Barcelona), an urban evaluation according with the Compact City Model Edwin Javier Azofeifa Valverde ABSTRACT In urban areas, economic development and efforts for improving the quality of citizens' lives, instead of complementing each other and contributing to the advancement of the city, both of them generate and accentuate the processes of physical and social fragmentation in cities. This thesis describes and evaluates the physical-spatial and social configuration in the neighbourhood of Raval in Barcelona, with a particular focus on the role played in that configuration by the immigrant population. The aim is to identify how those processes in which social inequality and a lack of access to certain services and facilities manifest themselves. In order to illustrate this reality and understand the configuration of Raval, population data and information regarding services, facilities, and urban furniture were gathered. The concept of compact urban development (the compact city model) was used in order to interpret the potential weaknesses in the neighbourhood, which hinder its functionality. The main drawbacks are the predominance of population groups occupying certain spaces hindering their potential integration in the...

The architecture of analogy : an inquiry into Aldo Rossi's theory of the city, the discipline, the type, and the analogue

McEwan, Cameron January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this dissertation is to put forward conceptual frameworks to inquire into and update the following theoretical categories of Aldo Rossi’s architectural production: the city as an artefact, the idea of type, architectural autonomy, history understood as collective imagination, and the concept of the analogical city. On one hand, our inquiry puts forward a close reading of particular aspects of Rossi’s formal and theoretical production, examining Rossi’s work as well as other commentators on Rossi’s work. On the other, the inquiry is supported by a selective reading of major figures as well as canonical theories and projects from the discipline of architecture. In both cases detailed readings of texts, drawings, built and unbuilt work is undertaken to extrapolate the theoretical categories as well as key descriptive characteristics. These develop the conceptual frameworks which are diagrams that visualise the relations between categories and characteristics. Revisiting Rossi helps us re-engage with architecture as a discipline that simultaneously produces its own historical-formal body of knowledge while co-determining the wider social imagination. The discipline has, in the last decades, become weakened by the continuing proliferation of unique architecture-objects and the rejection of architecture’s fixed terms of reference. By discussing the category of discipline, we point to future work on how architecture negotiates its formal condition and its societal role. We re-learn that architecture is an instrument that puts forward singular alternative ways of living – formal possibilities – and critical interpretations of existing conditions – theoretical alternatives. The primary method of inquiry is visual and literary montage. Simultaneously analytic and synthetic, montage provides a way to isolate theoretical categories and formal examples from the mass of material, then produce new insight by making connections between things otherwise different.

Da cidade das flores à cidade do evento: a produção do espaço urbano em Garanhuns-PE / From the city of flowers to the city of event: the production of urban space in Garanhuns-PE

Ferreira, Genovan Pessoa de Morais 15 March 2019 (has links)
The present dissertation addresses the production of urban space in the city of Garanhuns-PE. Grounded in a theoretical methodology that construes concrete socio-spatial realities within the realm of a totality, the central research question consists in analyzing how the contents of contemporary urbanization are revealed in the city of Garanhuns, from the perspective of broad capital reproduction. To do so, different economic, political and social processes were considered, in which the local-global and global-movements of these processes articulate among themselves and are manifested in the production of the city and the urban in Garanhuns. Among our suppositions, considering that the dominant socioeconomic processes take on particular forms in accordance with the scale in which they operate, the theoretical arch underlying the production of urban space helps us pursue how modes are processed in the production of the city and the urban in Garanhuns, connections that today turn the space into condition, means and production further reducing the space to economic fluxes and to a commodity-space. In this way, Garanhuns, a city of the municipality by the same name, located in the Southern Agreste Meso-region of Pernambuco, an elevated swamp area with a mild climate, allowed us to analyze some aspects that broadly determine the contemporary urban phenomena within the local sphere. We confirm that Garanhuns, together with the set of municipalities that make-up the meso-region, plays a central economic role due to its geographical position, as a business center in commercial areas, as a service and tourism center, the reason why here manifestations of urban life are relevant to the city itself. The analytic course we used to understand current urban contents, brought us to the conceptual triad media-culture-event. With this, we analyze how interactions between economic, political and social agents occur particularly between the State in its local sphere in the dynamics of realizing events and in the production of the urban space of Garanhuns as an event city. Using Blog content, historical literature and events observed in locus, we identified the profiles of the spaces of the events, their uses and processes by which spaces are have been give value, which have resulted in expansions of the urban fabric through the real estate sector; increases in precariousness and urban segregation of the poorest people in the citys peripheral areas, as well as the reverse process, the extension of peripheral areas stimulated by the promotion of closed condominium developments for high income segments of the population. This dynamic occurs in part through the aid of businesses generated by the media-culture-event sector, which on the one hand, has brought the economic logic of the hegemonic reproduction of capital to the city of Garanhuns, and on the other, by way of broadening consumption spaces and the consumption of space, imposes fragmentations and segregations, constraining the production of urban life for the majority of the poor, minimizing their right to the city.

Structural Tools In The Making Of Cities:form As A Development Control Mechanism

Ceylan, Aybike 01 December 2003 (has links) (PDF)
Macro-scale planning and design as a product of modernism have been abandoned to a high degree, as a result of the reactionary post-modern approaches since the 1960&amp / #65533 / s. Intensifying with the rise of neo-liberal approaches in the 1970&amp / #65533 / s, these reactions advocated merely incremental decision-making and design in the making of cities. These developments lived in the western countries showed their reflections in Turkey with the 1980&amp / #65533 / s, resulting in fragmented planning practices. However it is the hypothesis of the study that macro-scale urban design: thus designing the form and the structural elements of the city is the statement of the development policy of the city. Thus structural elements that make up a certain city form is a major area of concern for urban design. Within this frame firstly the debate between the modern and post-modern approaches about the scope of intervening in the development of the city will be evaluated. Then the Turkish planning approach will be analyzed with regard to its success in development control. Basic city forms and their growth characteristics will be examined in the next part. Finally the planning practices of Ankara and the form and the structural elements proposed will be evaluated accordingly.
