Enhancement of Random Forests Using Trees with Oblique SplitsParfionovas, Andrejus 01 May 2013 (has links)
This work presents an enhancement to the classification tree algorithm which forms the basis for Random Forests. Differently from the classical tree-based methods that focus on one variable at a time to separate the observations, the new algorithm performs the search for the best split in two-dimensional space using a linear combination of variables. Besides the classification, the method can be used to determine variables interaction and perform feature extraction. Theoretical investigations and numerical simulations were used to analyze the properties and performance of the new approach. Comparison with other popular classification methods was performed using simulated and real data examples. The algorithm was implemented as an extension package for the statistical computing environment R and is available for free download under the GNU General Public License.

Systematics of the genus Rhizopogon inferred from nuclear ribosomal DNA large subunit and internal transcribed spacer sequencesGrubisha, Lisa C. 22 June 1998 (has links)
Rhizopogon is a hypogeous fungal genus that forms ectomycorrhizae
with genera of the Pinaceae. The greatest number and species of
Rhizopogon are found in coniferous forests of the Pacific Northwestern
United States, where members of the Pinaceae are also concentrated.
Rhizopogon spp. are host-specific primarily with Pinus spp. and
Pseudotsuga spp. and thus are an important component of these forest
ecosystems. Rhizopogon includes over 100 species; however, the
systematics of Rhizopogon have not been well understood. Currently the
genus is placed in the Boletales, an order of ectomycorrhizal fungi that are
primarily epigeous and have a tubular hymenium. Suillus is a stipitate
genus closely related to Rhizopogon that is also in the Boletales and host
specific with Pinaceae. I examined the relationship of Rhizopogon to
Suillus and other genera in the Boletales. Infrageneric relationships in
Rhizopogon were also investigated to test current taxonomic hypotheses
and species concepts. Through phylogenetic analyses of large subunit and
internal transcribed spacer nuclear ribosomal DNA sequences, I found that
Rhizopogon and Suillus formed distinct monophyletic groups.
Rhizopogon was composed of four distinct groups; sections Amylopogon
and Villosuli were strongly supported monophyletic groups. Section
Rhizopogon was not monophyletic, and formed two distinct clades. Section
Fulviglebae formed a strongly supported group within section Villosuli.
Taxonomic revisions were proposed. Suillus, Truncocolumella, and the
Gomphidiaceae were transferred to the Rhizopogonaceae. In Rhizopogon,
sections Amylopogon, Rhizopogon, and Villosuli were elevated to
subgenera. Subgenus Roseoli was erected to accommodate the second
section Rhizopogon Glade. In section Fulviglebae, Stirps Vinicolor,
Rhizopogon ochraceisporus, R. subclavitisporus, and R. clavitisporus were
transferred to subgenus Villosuli while the remaining species in section
Fulviglebae were transferred to subgenus Rhizopogon. / Graduation date: 1999

Classification of Ordinary Chondrite NWA 6514 and Pb-Pb Chondrule ChronologyKoeoep, Levke 12 December 2011 (has links)
This study presents a petrographic description and a classification of ordinary chondrite NWA 6514 and aims to establish the first high-precision Pb-Pb age of a single ordinary chondrite chondrule. Furthermore, the distribution of different isotopic Pb signatures among chondritic components will be investigated by Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS).
This study shows that NWA 6514 can be classified as a highly unequilibrated (subtype 3.10) L or LL chondrite that has experienced moderate terrestrial weathering (W2) and a low degree of shock (S2). The LA-ICP-MS measurements suggest that radiogenic Pb signatures have been locally preserved in chondrules. However, the Pb isotopic compositions of leaches from a large chondrule obtained by thermal ionization mass spectrometry show an anomalous distribution that indicates the presence of an exotic Pb component. The best estimate for the chondrule formation age is a model age of the last leach (4566.8 ± 2.6 Myr).

Structures arborescentes et développements moléculairesDucharme, Martin January 2009 (has links) (PDF)

A kernel-based fuzzy clustering algorithm and its application in classificationWang, Jiun-hau 25 July 2006 (has links)
In this paper, we purpose a kernel-based fuzzy clustering algorithm to cluster data patterns in the feature space. Our method uses kernel functions to project data from the original space into a high dimensional feature space, and data are divided into groups though their similarities in the feature space with an incremental clustering approach. After clustering, data patterns of the same cluster in the feature space are then grouped with an arbitrarily shaped boundary in the original space. As a result, clusters with arbitrary shapes are discovered in the original space. Clustering, which can be taken as unsupervised classification, has also been utilized in resolving classification problems. So, we extend our method to process the classification problems. By working in the high dimensional feature space where the data are expected to more separable, we can discover the inner structure of the data distribution. Therefore, our method has the advantage of dealing with new incoming data pattern efficiently. The effectiveness of our method is demonstrated in the experiment.
