The emergence of new media types, many seemingly without counterparts in the non-digital world, challenges the readiness of existing knowledge organization schemes to accommodate them. A knowledge organization scheme based on a faceted analysis of existing classes of bibliographic materials is likely to accommodate new developments better than one based on a list of unanalyzed material types. The faceted analysis undertaken here, in which seven facets are recognized (content, generation of content, recording of content, publication/distribution, physical characteristics, perception/use, and relationships) shows the inadequacy of the traditional view of the bibliographic community of a fundamental distinction between content and carrier; interaction between content and carrier is common and enters into the characterization of material types. The facet analysis is validated by applying it to two new material types, wikis and blogs.

This paper introduces the history of library classifications application in Spanish libraries and discusses the validity of criteria followed in the recent adoption of the Library of Congress Classification (LCC) by some Spanish university libraries. The suitability of the scheme for subject indexing and retrieval is analysed contrasting advantages and disadvantages from several viewpoints: practical aspects of implementation, value as a knowledge organization system, efficacy for subject representation and retrieval, user friendliness and adequacy to functionalities required in Web OPACs. From the theoretical perspective, the lack of adherence of LCC to some fundamental canons for building library classifications defined by Ranganathan is also pointed out. On the overall, the paper argues in favour of decimal classification systems.

The UDC class 1 Philosophy. Psychology has remained unchanged for more than forty years. The most obvious problem with the class is an anachronistic intercalation of psychology in the middle of the class of philosophy which is one of the still uncorrected remainders of structural problems inherited from Dewey Decimal Classification.

Brief analysis of negative ideologies and concepts included in classification languages.

UDC Editorial Workshop is a meeting of the UDC Editors and UDC Advisory Board and invited guests. The 2011 workshop took place on 21 September 2011, in the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in The Hague and was attended by twenty participants. The focus of the workshop was on the structural issues of the UDC scheme, in particular with respect to the ongoing faceting of the scheme and the way in which this influences the UDC content revision process.
