(Chemical Equation Presented) Torn genes: DNA tetramers containing the 2-deoxyribonolactone (dL) lesion have been isolated by HPLC from d(CGCG) and d(pCGCG) films irradiated with X-rays. Upon treatment with spermine as a catalyst, the dL-containing tetramers decompose to 5-methylene-2-furanone (5-MF; see scheme), a characteristic product of dL decomposition. Hence, 5-MP can be used to quantify dL lesions in DNA.

Evolution Of Political Cleavages And Entry Of The Far-right In Government Coalitions In Italy And Poland

This project focuses on a comparative analysis of governing coalitions between conservative and far-right parties in recent years in Italy (1994) and Poland (2005). The aim is to show how the inclusion of the radical right in government coalitions in these countries reflects recent changes in Western and Eastern European party systems through the reformulation of the old and formation of new party cleavages. The focus in the recent literature on personality clashes of party leaders over the distribution of ministry portfolios does not explain the nature of the disagreement between these leaders about key issues of national politics. I argue that the mechanism of policy formulation between prospective coalitional partners can be traced at the level of party cleavages which pre-exist the negotiation process between party leaders. The political breakthrough of the far-right parties became possible because of the development of new issues related to the process of European integration and based on the longstanding confrontation between the left and right parties since the beginning of the Cold War. The disintegration of the previous party systems as a result of the collapse of the Communist regime in Poland and the First Republic in Italy in the post-Cold War era created a vacuum partly exploited by the previous anti-system far-right parties and the new emerging ones. At the same time, a clear tendency toward the cartelization of the programmatic supply was prominent on both the left and right sides of the political spectrum. I argue that the rise to prominence of center-right coalitions in the two countries led by Silvio Berlusconi and Jaroslav Kachinskiy respectively represents not only a new dimension in the development of the right wing in Europe but also constitutes a model of political realignment where new cleavages are gradually substituting for the old cleavages described in the Lipset-Rokkan model.

<p> Metagreywackes of the Goldenville Formation, Nova Scotia, possess a well developed spaced cleavage. Petrographic evidence suggests that the dominant mechanism producing this cleavage has been pressure solution, involving the dissolution of quartz from cleavage zones. A large amount of shortening occurs during cleavage development due to this volume loss of quartz. Based on a simple comparison of amounts of mica in cleavage and lithon zones shortenings of 50 - 60% have been found.</p> <p> Cleavage zones are marked by distinct mineralogical variations, notably a high content of white mica, and a low quartz content. Determination of matriptase-prostasin cleavage sites in the extracellular domain of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)

This year the American Cancer Society predicts that 565,650 individuals will lose their life as a result of their battle with cancer. Due to its established roles in cancer and extracellular presentation, the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) is an excellent target for anti-cancer drugs. It has been determined that matriptase and prostasin serine proteases are proteolytic regulators of EGFR membrane presentation, and downstream signaling. Currently, there are several drugs that target EGFR, but research continues in order to further understand drug-resistant EGFR. In cancer cell lines that exhibit both EGFR signaling and these proteases, proteolytic cleavage may be a mechanism of resistance to drugs that target the EGFR extracellular domain (ECD). The specific aim of this project was to determine which protease was direct! y responsible for EGFR cleavage and establish the precise cleavage site within the EGFR ECD. DNA corresponding to amino acid residues 336-505 of the EGFR ECD was cloned into the p-GEX-6P-I vector and expressed as a GST-fusion protein in E.coli cells. This fusion protein was isolated and purified by affinity chromatography. Purified GSTEGFR BCD fusion protein was mixed with prostasin and matriptase and evaluated for cleavage. No cleavage was detected using this method. Trypsin serine protease was used to ensure the cleavability of the GST-EGFR ECD. The GST-EGFR ECD fusion protein was found to be inappropriate for determining matriptase or prostasin cleavage sites, which are now being pursued by other means.
