Esses gêneros possuem características morfológicas similares entre si, incluindo o porte médio (comprimento total < 850 mm) e o corpo delgado, a dentição áglifa e a pupila circular. / Dipsadid snakes of the genera Echinanthera and Taeniophallus belong to the Echinantherini tribe. These genera have similar morphological features, including the medium size (total length < 850 mm) and slender body, the aglyph dentition, and round pupil. Furthermore, they share ecological similarities such as the cryptozoic habit and day time activity, diet based on amphibians anurans and reproduction apparently restricted to the rainy season (September to March). The recognition Echinanthera and Taeniophallus as distinct phylogenetic lineages has been controversial, but the most recent hypothesis considers the existence of both genera. The objective of this study was to describe the natural history of Echinanthera and Taeniophallus to evaluate possible similarities and differences between these genera. This study was based on the dissection of preserved specimens from herpetological collections. We analyzed a total of 240 specimens of E. undulata to characterize the reproductive cycle and diet. Individuals of the other species (T. affinis and T. occipitalis) were dissected only to examine gut contents. Literature data for other species were included for comparison. Echinanthera undulata presented sexual dimorphism, females have larger snout vent-length and smaller tail than males. Two variables (head length and eye diameter) are similar between the sexes. This snake had long tail, corresponding to about 45% of the total size. All the prey items (n = 12) found in the gut of E. undulata were anurans. The diet of species from the genus Taeniophallus was more diverse. Only three specimens of T. affinis contained food vestiges (one lizard, one amphibians anurans and one rodent). In T. occipitalis were 12 items (one amphibians anurans and 11 lizards). The reproduction of both genera is similar. Testicular volume... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Reprodução no gênero Bothrops (Serpentes, Viperidae) /

Barros, Verônica Alberto. January 2016 (has links)
Abstract: Reproduction is essential for the perpetuation of any species. That is why it is a central theme for studies on the biology of any organism. Here, I present new data on several aspects of reproduction for Bothrops species, including B. cotiara, B. alternatus, B. pubescens, B. diporus, B. mattogrossensis, B. neuwiedi and B. pauloensis. The characterization of reproductive events such as gametogenesis, sperm storage, formation of mating plugs and activity of the sexual segment of the kidneys (SSK) is provided. I also describe the presence of sperm inside the SSK for the first time in a snake species and intersexuality in B. moojeni and B. erythromelas. I evaluated the influence of environmental factors and phylogenetic inertia in the determination of reproductive events in these snakes by (1) a comparison of the timing of reproductive events between species which indicates that both factors may be important, (2) ancestral character state reconstructions showing a strong phylogenetic conservatism in sexual dimorphism with females being the larger sex and high variability in sexual maturity between species, (3) statistical analysis indicating that male reproductive variables do not vary according to temperature and rain in B. pubescens. Although there are many observations of reproductive events outside the expected periods for Bothrops species (mainly for timing of ovulation, pregnancy and sperm storage strategies), reports of mating and births are concentrated in autumn and summer, respectively, showing that although phylogenetic inertia has a high influence on the conserved timing of these reproductive events in Bothrops, environmental factors may also play a role in the plasticity observed in some species and individuals / Doutor

B. erythromelas and B. leucurus males attain sexual maturity at smaller sizes (snout-vent length – SVL) than conspecific females. C. durissus males and females from northeastern Brazil attain sexual maturity at similar sizes. However, other sexual maturity patterns have already been described for other populations. No significant difference was observed on SVL between mature males and females of C. durissus and B. leucurus. Male-male combat behavior has been previously described for these species. B. erythromelas females are larger than males and male-male combat has never been reported for this species. Reproductive cycles are described considering morphological and histological analysis of the gonads and genital ducts. Reproductive cycles of the three species considered herein are seasonal and influenced by climatic conditions and phylogenetic relationships. Secondary vitellogenic follicles may be found in every season in B. leucurus and B. erythromelas, and only during autumn and spring in C. durissus. Records of mating during the autumn are available for the three studied species, but it may also occur during winter in B. leucurus. After mating, spermatozoa are stored in the female reproductive tract by means of an uterine muscular twisting (UMT) until ovulation and fertilization occur (end of winter – beginning of summer) in C. durissus and B. leucurus. It is probable that it also occurs in B. erythromelas because mating and ovulation are not synchronous in this species either. However, we did not find evidences for the occurrence of the UMT to confirm... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

A influência de variações climáticas no ciclo reprodutivo de corais verdadeiras Micrurus corallinus e Micrurus frontalis /

Bassi, Erick Augusto. January 2016 (has links)
Além disso, neste trabalho há a primeira confirmação da estratégia reprodutiva de estocagem de espermatozoides pelas fêmeas no gênero Micrurus / Abstract: The reproductive cycle of snakes are coordinate evolutionarily for genetic factories and synchronize by seasonal weather (four seasons). In the tropical regions, the cold of winter is less marked than temperate zones and there is a diversity microclimate inside of biome. It's uncertainty if the difference of temperature and rainfall are capable to change the reproductive cycle in the specie and if these species has plasticity to modify their reproductive strategies. The aim of this research was analyze the influence of climate variation in reproductive cycle of Micrurus corallinus e Micrurus frontalis inside of each specie and between both species. The reproductive cycle was examined by biometric and histology data from biological collections. The result attained with this search, indicate that M. corallinus have a plasticity to adapt the cycle according environment conditions. In addition, the result of this work there is the first confirmation of the reproductive strategy of sperm storage by females in genus Micrurus / Mestre
