Perceptions of Underprepared Community College Students regarding their Educational Achievement

The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions of underprepared college students who had participated in learning communities and who persisted to complete developmental classes and earned at least 30 college-level credit hours to graduate and the perceptions of their peers who had dropped out of college. The theories posed by Tinto, Astin, and Freire formed the framework for this case study. The 22 participants were graduates or transfer students now attending a public university, currently-enrolled sophomores, and students no longer enrolled at the time of the study. Semi-structured individual interviews and a group interview provided narrative data which were transcribed, coded, and analyzed to gain insights into the experiences and perspectives of the participants. The group interview provided a form of member checking to increase accuracy in interpreting themes. A peer reviewer provided feedback on the researcher’s data analysis procedures. The analysis yielded four themes and 14 sub-themes which captured the essence of the participants’ experiences. The pre-college characteristics/traits theme described the students’ internal values and attributes acquired prior to college. The external college support/community influence theme described the encouragement to attend college the students received from family, friends, and high school teachers. The social involvement theme described the students’ participation in campus activities and their interactions with other members of the campus. The academic integration theme described students’ use of campus resources and their contacts with the faculty. The persisters reported strong family and peer support, a sense of responsibility, appreciation for dedicated and caring faculty, and a belief that an education can be a liberatory means to achieve their goals. The non-persisters did not report having the same sense of purpose, goal orientation, determination, obligation to meet family expectations, peer support, campus involvement, positive faculty experiences, and time management skills. The researcher offers an emerging model for understanding factors associated with persistence and three recommendations for enhancing the academic experience of underprepared college students: (a) include a critical pedagogy perspective in coursework where possible, (b) integrate co-curricular activities with the academic disciplines, and (c) increase student-faculty interaction.

A Quantitative Analysis of the SAILS (Seamless Alignment of Integrated Learning Support) Program Collaboration in a Community College Setting

In 2007, the Seamless Alignment and Integrated Learning Support (SAILS) program was implemented on a small scale at both Chattanooga State Community College (ChSCC) and Cleveland State Community College (CSCC) with the primary focus of implementing college remediation methods with area high school students during their senior year (ChSCC, n.d.). In cooperation with Governor Bill Haslam’s “Drive to 55” initiative within the State of Tennessee, the SAILS program expanded in 2013 to include 13 community colleges across Tennessee and has been touted as a possible solution to reducing the number of incoming college freshman who are required to participate in college remediation (Drive to 55 Alliance, 2016). The purpose of this study was to examine the student enrollments, withdrawals, final grades, and course completions as well as the gender and ethnicity of the SAILS versus Non-SAILS students who enrolled in the Math 1530, Probability and Statistics, course at one of six rural or urban community college campus locations at one community college in East Tennessee. The intent of the study was to provide additional insight regarding whether the SAILS program produces comparable student outcomes when compared to the Non-SAILS program students and whether the SAILS program adequately prepares the high student academically for a college level math course. This study included 833 students (349 SAILS and 484 Non-SAILS) at both rural and urban campus locations enrolled in Math 1530, Probability and Statistics. In general, the SAILS students performed comparably to the Non-SAILS students academically, although the proportion of Non-SAILS students overall tended to be higher in most comparisons. Gender was found not to vary significantly within the SAILS and Non-SAILS students, however race and ethnicity was highly skewed with 95% of students being White-Non-Hispanic. This study provides information regarding the effectiveness of the SAILS program and offers insight into how high school students may perform in a college-level math course upon completion of the SAILS program.

College Bound: Are High Schools Preparing Students for the Task

The number of college freshmen enrolled in developmental courses is an indicator that many American high school graduates are not adequately prepared for college. Research has indicated that from 30% to 69% of high school graduates who entered college are required to take at least one developmental course. The purpose of this study was to examine the high school experiences of freshmen college students, specifically, the roles their high school teachers, high school guidance counselors, the parents, and they themselves played in preparing them for college. Data were analyzed to explore differences by race (majority v. minority), gender and type of English class (regular v. developmental). The participants were freshmen students enrolled in college developmental English and general English courses at one community college and one four year college. In order to answer the research questions presented in this study, participants completed a 60-item questionnaire. Fifteen items addressed areas that the research questions investigated (i.e. role of high school teachers, guidance counselors, parents, self). The research questions were examined through a series of analysis of variance tests. Results revealed significant differences by race, gender, type of class and interactions between the effects. The data provide the basis for making recommendations to high school administrators and local school boards which, when implemented will better prepare high school students for the academic rigors of college courses. / Ed. The relationship between completing the Applications of Mathematical Reasoning course and high school to community college transitions

In 2004, the Transition Mathematics Project (TMP), funded by the state of Washington and The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was established to create projects to help high school students gain the necessary skills to become college and work-ready. Aligned to TMP's College Readiness Mathematics Standards, a fourth-year capstone mathematics course was developed and implemented, titled Applications in Mathematical Reasoning (AMR), a rigorous course option for students to take during their senior year of high school. The purpose of this study was to explore any relationship between taking the AMR course and preparation for college level mathematics. Using causal-comparative study design and matching participants in the sample, variables were examined based on the number of precollege courses taken; college level math course completed and grade earned; and placement test results for students who took the AMR course compared to those students who took no mathematics during their high school senior year. Though findings for precollege and college level course-taking were inconclusive, mathematics placement test scores were found to be significantly higher for those students who completed the AMR course. The placement test findings supported other research that links rigorous mathematics courses taken in high school with improved college placement and persistence. Based on the research examined and the study findings, there was support to consider the following: (a) creating alternate but rigorous math course offerings for the high school senior year; (b) striving toward a four-years of mathematics graduation requirement for all high schools; (c) enacting mandatory placement at the community college for students placing into precollege courses; and (d) reducing barriers to successful transition between high schools and post secondary institutions by fostering K-16 communication, aligning standards, and improving course alignment. / Graduation date: 2012
