Pluralistic ignorance and explicit attitudes on academic cheating in college students and facultyUnknown Date (has links)
Academic integrity essentially centers on an individual’s ethical attitudes and behaviors as well as injunctive norms, or norms that dictate what is socially accepted and lauded. One key influence may be pluralistic ignorance; here arguments for cheating posit that students cheat because they perceive that others are “doing it” to a greater extent than is actually true and thus what they are doing is minimized in relation to others. Research indicates that students perceive cheating as more widespread than it actually is (Hard, Conway, & Moran, 2006). A considerable gap in the research is noted when looking at definitions of what constitutes academic fraud, research has indicated that when students are asked if they have cheated and then given a definition of cheating, their self-reports of cheating increase (Burrus et al., 2007). This indicates that students’ definition of cheating and a universities’ definition of cheating may be incongruent. Participants were 507 members of the Florida Atlantic University community during the 2012-2013 academic year who completed a survey that consisted of items, which centered on self-reported cheating, perceptions of what cheating constitutes, and estimates of cheating prevalence. Results indicate that students reported peer cheating to be higher then self reported cheating, that participants distinguished between five different forms of cheating, and that faculty and students hold differing definitions of cheating. The findings suggest a disconnect between faculty perceptions and definitions of academic integrity and students. This would suggest that greater efforts should to be taken to bring a more uniform operational definition of what constitutes academic dishonesty that universities, faculty, and students can rely on. Second, as a pluralist model of cheating was supported, universities could develop campaigns like those aimed at reducing drinking, hooking up, and increasing women in STEM fields (Lambert, Kahn & Apple, 2003; Mattern & Neighbors, 2004; Muldoon, 2002; Schroder & Prentice, 1998). Research has suggested social norm campaigns targeting pluralistic ignorance can be effective on college campuses. Campus Sexual Assault and (In)Justice: an Inquiry into Campus Grievance Professionals' Roles, Responsibilities, and Perspectives of JusticeO'Banion, Liane Kehaulani 12 June 2018 (has links)
Approximately one in four women experience sexual violence in college. Public institutions of higher education identify professionals specifically responsible for Title IX compliance, campus grievance processes, and survivor advocacy. Success in these roles depends upon a variety of institutional, legal, and procedural factors, and the ability to balance compliance, accountability, transparency, confidentiality, and care for students in pursuit of institutional justice. However, the literature has failed to acknowledge the complexities and individual cost of serving in these contentious roles. Moreover, facets of organizational culture can hinder grievance professionals' efficacy in fulfilling their duties, facilitating consistent and fair resolutions, and ensuring just outcomes. This exploratory, qualitative study sought to fill the literature gap and add insight into the experiences and perspectives of student conduct, Title IX, and advocacy professionals at multiple public institutions by seeking to understand individual actions, values, and responses in light of organizational structures, institutional policies, leadership, grievance models, and power dynamics. Data indicated that professionals involved in campus grievance endure severe emotional strain in their efforts to facilitate justice, especially if their own values and principles are misaligned with those of institutional leaders, policies, grievance processes, or outcomes. Moreover, the findings suggest that such misalignment diminishes professional efficacy, which increases stress, fatigue, and leads to burnout, thereby decreasing the likelihood of realizing justice. Recommendations include revisions to graduate education, reimagined compelled disclosure policies, the need for employee support programs, and a call for further accountability of institutional leaders. Finally, an alternative paradigm is explicated for moral and justice-centered resolutions of campus sexual assault.

Management of student misconduct at a TVET college in the Western CapeOosthuizen, Louis Jacobus January 2018 (has links)
Thesis (MEd)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018. / Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges play an important role in providing a competent workforce that can contribute to the economic development of South Africa. TVET Colleges also provide an alternative pathway for students who have not completed grade 12. TVET Colleges have seen many changes during the past decades and have reportedly been underperforming in various areas, including academically. Student misconduct may, amongst other factors, have a determining influence on the poor performance of TVET Colleges. Student misconduct comprises the nature of student misconduct, factors leading to student misconduct and management of student misconduct. The nature of student misconduct, factors leading to student misconduct and methods used to manage student misconduct at TVET Colleges remain largely unidentified and need to be researched. The purpose of this study is to determine the nature of student misconduct, factors leading to student misconduct and how student misconduct is managed at a TVET College in the Western Cape. The nature of student misconduct is classified into ordinary student misconduct and serious misconduct. Factors leading to student misconduct are classified into factors related to the management of TVET Colleges, lecturer qualifications and competence and student background and preparedness. Management of student misconduct is classified into reactive methods and preventative methods for managing student misconduct. The research methodology employed for this study was an explanatory mixed method. The explanatory mixed methodology collects quantitative data first and then, based on the quantitative findings, collects qualitative data to elaborate on the quantitative findings. The major findings of the quantitative phase created topics for further discussion during qualitative interviews. The study found that the most frequent forms of TVET student misconduct are ordinary forms of student misconduct such as absenteeism, playing with cellular phones in class and arriving late for lessons. The most frequent factors leading to student misconduct were found to be students becoming hungry during lessons, students coming from disadvantaged homes and students finding work too difficult. Students' home environment and level of academic preparedness therefore has an impact on their behaviour. Students who originate from disadvantaged homes, experience lack of provision in their basic needs, and also a lack of geborgenheit which lead to student disciplinary problems. As a counter measure, methods applied in the interest of managing student misconduct should include an atmosphere of geborgenheit. The study indicated that the most effective methods for managing student misconduct are the creation of a friendly classroom atmosphere, lecturer’s good subject knowledge, proper lesson preparation and positive student-lecturer relationships. A combination of the above-mentioned methods implies interesting lessons filled with activities that engage students who feel safe, loved and unconditionally accepted in their learning environment. When students feel safe and unconditionally accepted they experience an atmosphere of geborgenheit, a pre-requisite for management of student discipline. Poorly disciplined students, it was found, who display deliberate forms of student misconduct should be disciplined by means of stricter methods such as classroom rules and the disciplinary procedure. Methods applied in the interest of managing student misconduct should, however, be accompanied by an atmosphere of geborgenheit. Disciplinary measures should address misconduct from a position of love and unconditional acceptance. Students with behavioural problems need to be identified and referred to student support services for effective support. It is recommended that an early identification and support system be considered for early identification and referral of students with behavioural problems. Successful implementation of an early identification system should include the involvement health and welfare organisations and religious organisations. Student support services should, in addition, be expanded and posts created for educational psychologists to provide effective counselling to students with behavioural problems. TVET lecturers need to have workplace experience and qualifications, academic qualifications and teaching qualifications to enable them to present interesting, well prepared lessons using a variety of methodologies. It is recommended that TVET Colleges and the DHET invest in upgrading the qualifications of TVET lecturers through bursary schemes, time off at work and salary scales that are linked to qualification levels.

Attitude of Resident Students and Staff of Selected Public Universities in Texas Toward In Loco ParentisZeagler, Arnold M. 08 1900 (has links)
This study assesses the attitudes of resident college students and staffs toward the concept in loco parents as it pertains to residence hall administration. It also describes relationships between attitudes toward in loco parentis combinations of four demographic variables: university, status (staff or resident) academic level, and sex. The chi-square analysis indicated thirty-one significant relationships between attitudes toward the eleven residence hall situations and the four demographic variables. Major findings indicated that: (a) resident students and staffs were ambiguous toward in loco parents; (b) resident students and staffs were for or against in loco parents depending upon the situation (eleven situations are discussed); (c) attitudes of resident students and staffs were similar in most situations; and (d) the majority of resident students and staff members felt positively toward an objective description of in loco parentis, but this attitude did not prevail when the concept was manifested in university staff behavior in typical residence hall situations.

Counselling as a critical tool in managing ill-discipline behaviour in colleges of education in GhanaFosu-Ayarkwah, Charles 21 April 2021 (has links)
Ill-discipline behaviour has become a canker that threatens the moral fibre of
institutions. The purpose of this study was to explore how discipline measures
and practices were viewed by teacher trainees and college managers alike.
Furthermore, to determine what comprehensive counselling approaches were in
place to manage ill-discipline behaviour acts in colleges of education in Ghana.
A qualitative discourse analysis study design was employed in the study. In all,
25 participants were purposively selected from five colleges of education for the
study using a semi-structured interview guide. Data collected was transcribed,
coded, categorized and qualitatively analysed under themes that emerged from
the analysis using the thematic approach. The study revealed that several illdiscipline
behaviour acts exist in colleges of education, with perversion being the
most prevailing ill-discipline behaviour act. The study also revealed that
tertiarization of colleges is the major cause of ill-discipline behaviour among
students in the colleges of education and poor academic performance being the
major negative effect of ill-discipline behaviour in the colleges of education.
The study recommended that the college council and management should put
adequate measures in place to strengthen Guidance and Counselling units in the
colleges of education. The study also recommended that college counsellors
should be equipped to use appropriate counselling approaches and techniques
to counsel students to desist from indulging in ill-discipline behaviour acts. / Educational Management and Leadership / D. Phil. (Education Management)
