The Perceptions of Teachers of United States History in Traditionally Black Colleges with Regard to their Efforts to Promote Cognitive Development in StudentsJohnson, Stanley W. (Stanley Webster) 08 1900 (has links)
The problem for this investigation was the extent to which instruction in the traditionally black colleges and universities was directed toward higher cognitive skills as perceived by teachers of United States history in these institutions. The purposes of the study were to determine whether teachers (1) in state supported as opposed to private black colleges, (2) in urban-based as opposed to non-urban-based black colleges, (3) at non-denominational as opposed to denominational black colleges, (4) of age forty or older as opposed to teachers under age forty at black colleges,(5) categorized according to gender at black colleges, (6) categorized as United States citizens as opposed to non-citizens at black colleges, and (7) taught at black colleges and those who taught at white colleges differed significantly in their reported efforts to promote higher cognitive development. The following conclusions were drawn: Teachers at black colleges, as well as black teachers and white teachers at black colleges appeared to recognize the need to develop the higher mental powers of theirs students. Emphasis upon higher cognitive development is not likely to vary significantly according to academic degrees attained by the teacher, the geographic area in which the teacher was reared, or the gender of the teacher. Graduates of black colleges who taught at black colleges were apparently more attuned to the need for teaching higher cognitive development than were other teachers at black colleges.

University Faculty and Diverse Students' Self-Reported Attitudes toward Inclusive Teaching StrategiesAlamri, Abdulrahman Saleh 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examines a university faculty (n = 41) and diverse students (n = 93) including students with disability (n = 44), students without disability (n = 21), and international students (n = 28) regarding their attitudes toward and actions associated with inclusive instruction based on the universal design for learning (UDL) principles and practices. Two online surveys, the Inclusive Teaching Strategies Inventory (ITSI) and the Inclusive Teaching Strategies Inventory-Student (ITSI-S), were administered at a large, public Southwest university (N = 134). The ITSI and ITSI-S contain seven subscales representing the following constructs: (a) accommodations, (b) accessible course materials, (c) course modifications, (d) inclusive lecture strategies, (e) inclusive classroom, (f) inclusive assessment, and (g) disability laws and concepts. A series of multivariate analyses of variances (MANOVAs) measured the overall of attitude subscales and overall action subscales, and an independent-samples test (t-test) compared mean scores on the seven Attitude subscales and seven Action subscales to identify predictors of these attitudes and actions among faculty and students. The main findings were (a) significant differences among diverse students, where students with disability responded negatively on the Action subscales and (b) significant differences between faculty and diverse students where international students had a positive attitude on the Attitude subscales, whereas students with disability had a negative attitude on the Action subscales toward the actual practices of their faculty. Results of the current study respond to the gap in the literature by examining the inclusive instruction environment based on UDL in a university environment. The implications of these findings and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Perceptions of staff on collegiality and accountability in promoting quality assurance at Helderberg CollegeAppollis, Jilian Rosemary 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPhil (Curriculum Studies))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / Over the past 10 to 15 years significant changes have taken place in higher education.
Higher education institutions have been influenced by globalisation, an information
explosion, shifts in teaching approaches to facilitate learning and new approaches to
governance. Some of these factors have had implications on the decision-making
processes which were traditionally used in higher education. Amongst these demands
for change, the one which has apparently presented the most challenges is the demand
for accountability to the stakeholders of higher education institutions. These
stakeholders include the government, students, different communities and the
constituents of the labour market.
In order to meet the demands for accountability, an instrument referred to as quality
assurance was introduced at all higher education institutions. Many institutions
resorted to adopting a managerial approach to manage quality assurance and to
facilitate efficiency. In using this approach, more regulation and demands for
compliance were sought. The managerial approach appeared to be more bureaucratic
than the traditional collegial ethos of universities. Lecturers experienced that their
autonomy was being undermined and their academic freedom restricted. Therefore
they often resorted to resistance.
In this study the literature overview revealed that there is a strong debate as to which
approach to quality management is most suited to higher education. A case study was
conducted at Helderberg College, which is a private higher education institution in the
Western Cape Province. The aim of this study was to explore how lecturers reacted to
the concept of quality assurance, but more specifically, which approach to quality
management they preferred. The main objective was to establish what lecturers would
regard as a suitable quality assurance framework that would contribute to
accountability and trust.
Findings from the study suggest that there is no single model for quality assurance
which would suit every institution, and Helderberg College in particular. The
preference indicated by staff was for a collegial approach, which may include
elements of managerialism to address the demands for efficiency, whilst protecting the autonomy of the lecturers. Other elements that were identified as likely to promote
trust and accountability within a quality assurance framework, were shared vision,
consultation, collaboration and involvement in decision-making processes.

Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2012. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis briefly explores the quality phenomenon in higher education and more specifically in the university context. In addition, the experiences of stakeholders who participated in the first institutional quality audit at a merged university are explored and analysed. It is also argued that the world-wide quality phenomenon at universities, although sometimes politically driven and at times undertaken with hidden agendas, may eventually add value to a university‟ cycle of never-ending quality improvement and enhancement. University stakeholders who are either directly or indirectly involved in realising the university‟s vision and mission can provide invaluable feedback about their experience of a quality audit. Feedback by all stakeholders about a quality audit will assist the university to plan and prepare for the next cycle of quality audits. The research findings of this study indicated that a variety of differences exist in the perceptions of stakeholders that participated in the preparation and execution of the institutional quality audit. In some cases the differences may hold some limited risk for the university therefore some recommendations are also made in support of future audits. These and other recommendations emenating from the research findings will hopefully also contribute towards improved engagement between the stakeholders and members of the audit panel. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie verhandeling ondersoek kortliks die verskynsel van gehalte in hoër onderwys, en meer spesifiek in die universiteitskonteks. Voorts word die ervarings van belanghebbendes wat deelgeneem het aan die eerste institusionele kwaliteitsoudit aan ʼn saamgesmelte universiteit, ondersoek en ontleed. Daar word ook aangevoer dat die wêreldwye verskynsel van kwaliteit aan universiteite uiteindelik waarde kan toevoeg tot ʼn universiteit se siklus van ewigdurende kwaliteitsversekering en –verbetering, selfs al is hierdie verskynsel soms polities gedrewe en al gaan dit by tye gepaard met verskuilde agendas. Belanghebbendes van die universiteit wat direk of indirek betrokke is by die realisering van die universiteit se visie en missie kan uiters waardevolle terugvoer bied oor hulle ervaring van ʼn kwaliteitsoudit. Terugvoer deur alle belanghebbendes oor ʼn kwaliteitsoudit sal die universiteit help om vir die volgende siklus kwaliteitsoudits te beplan en voor te berei. Die navorsingsbevindings van hierdie studie dui daarop dat ʼn verskeidenheid verskille wel bestaan in die persepsies van belanghebbendes wat deelgeneem het aan die voorbereiding en uitvoering van die institusionele kwaliteitsoudit. In sommige gevalle hou die verskille wel ʼn beperkte risiko vir die universiteit in en daarom word aanbevelings gemaak ter ondersteuning van toekomstige kwaliteitsoudits. Academics in Chinese research universities are confronted by the dilemma of balancing research and teaching in their work. China's pursuit of excellence in higher education through such endeavors as Projects 211 & 985, has led to policies that facilitate the construction of research universities. However, the emphasis on research and quantity has undermined the quality of teaching. It has also drawn academics away from their commitment to teaching. This has become a major issue to be addressed by policy, such as the "Programs of improving teaching quality". / Firstly, characteristics of academics at research universities in China differ from that proposed by Kennedy (1997). The differences are: (1) most academics believe that the duty "to mentor" is accomplished once they accept the appointment of a position for tutoring. (2) Their conception of research is closely related to the quantity of research output, which means that they perceive their duty "to discover" and "to tell the truth" is equivalent to the duty "to publish" and "to get research grants". (3) The definition of "service" is unclear for most of the academics. (4) They are not been "to assist new staff in their teaching role" and "to nurture a new generation of scholars". / Secondly, the conception of "scholarship" and the relationship between teaching and research are changing in Chinese research universities. (1) The academics' views on knowledge include the four types of "scholarship", as proposed by Boyer (1990), these views are hardly sufficient for the construction of "academic communities of practice". (2) Most academics have changed their initial attitude of separating teaching and research in their conception of "academic duties" by accepting the view that teaching and research should be synergized. / The study offers the following recommendations: (1) a free atmosphere with proper competition should be built into the system of academic development of the universities; (2) policy on teaching should focus on improving the level of intrinsic motivation, the assimilation of values, and the satisfaction of three basic needs such as autonomy, competence, and relatedness; (3) through building a commonly shared value system in the university, institutional regulations and rules can be transformed into a force that supports the building of institutional ethics; and (4) the adoption of a moral rationality which is based on substantive rationality should help academics to confront a distorted realities in the system. / Thirdly, the most powerful force which affects the teachers' opinions and performance towards academic duties is the promotion and evaluation system of the universities. Teachers' opinions are also influenced by age, position, discipline, etc., and their opinions can be grouped into four categories by their understanding and reaction to the evaluation system. / This study focuses on the conceptualization of "academic duties" by university teachers and on the factors that mediate their duty implementation. It explores the academics' experiences at two research universities which have different focuses and developmental goals. Data were collected through interviews with 50 participants in the case universities. In addition, university documents and data collected through observations were also analyzed. The purpose of this research was to investigate the factors affecting job satisfaction at the Coastal Kwa Zulu Natal (KZN) Further Education and Training (FET) COLLEGE - SWINTON CAMPUS in order to determine the factors that lead to job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction, to measure these factors and to present findings and make recommendations to management and the Department of Education in order to promote and improve job satisfaction at the college. The data was collected and administered by means of a structured questionnaire based on the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ).
It was discovered that most of the academic staff draw their job satisfaction from having a positive working relationship with management, their relationships with their peers, their training needs and the training provided from the college, and the condition of their staff room.
It was found that educators mostly derive their job dissatisfaction from the absence of recognition for work done, remuneration and the benefits that they receive, company policies and practices, achievement and advancement, feedback and communication, the ability to work independently and creatively and the general working conditions of the college.
