The collembola of the Vancouver region of British Columbia

Wade, Lionel Earl January 1954 (has links)
An initial study of the Collembola of British Columbia, based on two hundred and eighty-seven collections from locations in the lower Fraser Valley, eastern Vancouver Island and the area around Kamloops in the Dry Interior, reveals forty-five definitely identified species, herein briefly described, annotated and illustrated, and an equal number, not included in this work, upon which further study is necessary. The species recorded here consist of twelve species of the Family Poduridae, eight species of the Family Isotomidae, twenty-one species of the Family Entomobryidae, and four species of the Family Sminthuridae. The diversity of species, as shown in this limited study, indicates that this Order of insects is very substantially represented in this Province of extremely diversified ecological habitats. This present work constitutes the first portion of a monograph of the Collembola of British Columbia upon which the author is currently engaged. / Science, Faculty of / Zoology, Department of / Graduate

Feeding mechanisms and biological observations on certain soil-inhabiting Collembola.

Sharma, Ganga D. January 1964 (has links)
Soil animals, of which micro-arthropods constitute a high proportion, do not merely play a subsidiary role in the formation of different humus forms, but a most decisive one (Kubigna, 1955). Among the micro-arthropods, collembola are believed to play an important role in the breakdown of litter and humus (Schaller, 1950). Poole (1959) suggests that the direct value of collembola as litter feeders is probably small, judging solely from their gut contents, but, on the other hand, they must play sorne part both chemical and physical, in the breakdown of humus. He further states that their numbers and activity suggest that they may be of considerable importance. Dunger (1956) and Fourman (1938) are also of the opinion that collembola participate in the decomposition of falling leaves. [...]
