Indoor thermal comfort and associated adaptive measures towards an energy efficient new campus in Borlänge, Sweden

Thermal comfort of the occupants is of highest importance specifically in Scandinavian countries. Especially for an educational building, both students and working staff spend most of their time indoors, therefore it is critical to guarantee a healthy and productive indoor climate environment around a whole year. Taking into account that Högskolan Dalarna plans to move into a newly renovated building in the center of Borlänge in 2022, this thesis focus on this essential topic and tries to dig out some valuable adaptive suggestions for the coming schematic design phase. In the next design phase, it aims to satisfy design requirements of Miljöbyggnad 3.0 certification at sliver level, as well as operation requirements of BREEAM InUse at very good level. Consequently, the aim of this thesis project is to have an overall thermal comfort assessment of all representative rooms in the project of the new campus building in Borlänge, Sweden. The thermal comfort assessment consists of both winter situation and summer situation. Both situations are completely under recommended study method from Miljöbyggnad 3.0 with the technical assistant of dynamic building simulation software tool IDA ICE 4.8. Several aspects have been investigated in terms of indoor thermal comfort. The first impacting element is future climate scenarios, so as to check how the future climate will affect the thermal comfort performance. Afterwards, both external and internal shading devices were individually applied to examine and quantify the benefits in terms of indoor thermal comfort. Lastly, the advanced control shading strategies were studied to further improve the thermal comfort performance based on the appropriate conventional shading method. The results showed that future climate scenario has limited impact on the thermal comfort performance when rooms are under temperature controlled via room heating and cooling units. Regarding the shading methods, the internal shading was proved to give a better overall performance. If there is the chance to implement automation shading device, the author recommends the “zone air temperature with operative temperature setpoint 21°C, in which proved to be significantly improved the thermal comfort levels that previously discovered in the vulnerable zones. Therefore, it is expected significantly to reduce the energy dependency during cooling season.

Assessing tall building oscillation is a multidisciplinary area involving knowledge from different fields of study: structural engineering, wind engineering, reliability, and even human physiology, to name a few. With the modern high strength structural materials and the latest tendencies in tall buildings construction, new structural systems have become slender and new buildings have reached greater heights as time passes. This context leads to a situation where these slender structures are sensitive to dynamic effects from wind loads and where human comfort is often the prevailing criterion for the structural design. This multidisciplinary area with slender structural systems allied to economic and environmental aspects from building construction demands a better integration between the abovementioned fields in order to achieve both human comfort and sustainable buildings (from environmental and economic points of view). This thesis aims at connecting the \"weak links\" of the Davenport\'s chain of wind loading, discussing criteria from each field involved in the oscillation assessment of a tall building: dynamic analysis, finite element modelling, wind climate modelling and comfort assessment. The axis of investigation intends to bring precision to the procedure, whilst creating a reliable set of criteria to perform a dynamic response assessment from the wind tunnel testing of tall buildings. This thesis also aims at connecting these fields of study by bringing understanding from each one of them to all the others, and at validating multidisciplinary interactions in the Davenport\'s chain. Finally, a wide dispersion of results is obtained for two different tall buildings in São Paulo. This dispersion serves to corroborate the deficient integration between these fields of study and to present a set of criteria that brings precision to the procedure, whilst allowing more economic and sustainable designs. / O estudo das oscilações de edifícios altos sob ação do vento é uma área multidisciplinar que envolve conhecimentos de diferentes campos de estudo: engenharia estrutural, engenharia de vento, confiabilidade e até fisiologia humana, para citar apenas alguns. Em paralelo, a criação de novos materiais de construção de alta resistência, aliados às últimas tendências na construção de edifícios altos, permite sistemas estruturais cada vez mais esbeltos aplicados a edifícios cada vez mais altos. Este contexto leva a uma situação em que estes sistemas estruturais são sensíveis aos efeitos dinâmicos das cargas de vento e onde o conforto humano é frequentemente o critério preponderante para o projeto estrutural. Esta área multidisciplinar, com seus sistemas estruturais esbeltos, aliada aos aspectos econômicos e ambientais da construção de edifícios altos, exige uma melhor integração entre os campos acima referidos para se alcançar conforto humano em edifícios sustentáveis (tanto do ponto de vista ambiental quanto do econômico). Esta tese tem como eixo de investigação os \"elos fracos\" da corrente de cargas de vento de Davenport e discute os critérios de cada campo envolvido na avaliação das oscilações de um edifício alto: análise dinâmica, modelagem de elementos finitos, modelagem probabilística de vento e avaliação de conforto. Analysis of Vehicle Dynamics and Control of Occupant Biodynamics using a Novel Multi-Occupant Vehicle Model

Due to the detrimental effects of ride vibrations on occupants and increasing safety concerns, improvement in vehicle dynamic characteristics has become a key focus of researchers. Typically, ride and handling problems have been dealt with independently. There is a dearth of vehicle models capable of capturing occupant biodynamics and its implication on vehicle ride and handling. Also in general, the objective of conventional control systems has been to attenuate vertical dynamic response of the sprung mass of a vehicle. Feedback control based algorithms are predominantly used in active/semi-active suspensions that ignore the biodynamics of occupants. In the current work, a new 50 degree-of-freedom (DOF) combined nonlinear multi-occupant vehicle model is developed using the lumped parameter modelling (LPM) approach. The current model provides a platform for performing a combined study of ride, handling and occupant biodynamics. The model is capable of simulating the combined effect of sitting occupancies, road inputs and driving maneuvers on biodynamic responses. It is analyzed using MATLAB/SIMULINK functionalities and validated by independently correlating the computed responses with existing experimental results. A study is performed on ride behavior of a vehicle-occupant system under two different transient road inputs. In addition, the effect of road roughness on vehicle ride is also studied. Random road profiles are generated from road roughness spectrum given in the ISO 8608:1995 manual. Insights are developed into the ride dynamics of a vehicle traversing over roads of classes A, B, C and D at given test velocities. The effect of sitting occupancies and vehicle velocities on lateral dynamics is also studied. Results underscore the need for considering sitting occupancies while analyzing vehicle dynamics and also highlight the potential of the current model. Furthermore, a Moore-Penrose Pseudoinverse based feed-forward controller is developed and implemented in an independently acting semi-active seat suspension system. Feasibility of feed-forward control in primary suspensions is also investigated. Finally, issues of stability, performance and limitation of the controller are discussed.

Diplomová práce je zaměřena na měření ventilovaného sedadla s ohledem na tepelný komfort člověka. Popisuje a shrnuje tepelný přenos lidského těla s okolím a termoregulaci člověka. Dále zachycuje a zhodnocuje vybrané přístupy hodnocení tepelného komfortu. Zabývá se komplexním přehledem tepelně komfortních jednotek v automobilu. Představuje použitou metodu měření tepelného komfortu u ventilovaného sedadla, načež analyzuje a vyhodnocuje jednotlivá získaná data.
