Untangling the radical imaginaries of the Indignados' movement: Commons, autonomy and ecologism

Asara, Viviana January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
The "movements of the squares" involved first and foremost an awakening or re-discovering of the radical imagination both in the square encampments, and in later projects created with the movements' decentralizations. The new alternative projects born after the square have materialized the movements' radical imaginaries in urban environments, extending and deepening concerns of broad political change over everyday life. Based on ethnographic work on the Indignados' movement in the city of Barcelona, this paper delves more particularly into three Indignant urban projects. It untangles three common and interlinked radical imaginaries both embodied and actualized in participants' social practices, and further orienting their future visions: commons, autonomy and ecologism. Scrutinizing their meaning, it also sheds light on connected issues such new ways of interfacing with local state authorities and redefining the boundaries between the public and the common. It shows that the ecologism imaginary cannot be properly grasped if disconnected from the other two imaginaries, and argues that a transformative eco-politics can only be claimed as such if it is able to articulate such an integrated vision typical of "socio-environmental movements". / Series: SRE - Discussion Papers

This study aims to examine the adequacy of the copyright licensing system developed by Creative Commons Foundation to Brazilian copyright laws. Also, the study intends to understand what possible legal contours of an increasingly collaborative culture in the production of content and licensing. Finally, it tries to determine what are the consequences and possible adaptation needs of the Brazilian legislation towards a new dynamic of legal relations. By exposing the contents of the Creative Commons licenses, it will analyze the legal content of the same, as well as statistical data on the distribution of licenses, who uses them, how they are used and also what the trends identified from the data. Based on the theoretical framework of "Law as Integrity" from the work of Ronald Dworkin, this dissertation brings the research results, which consist of a comparison of the usual behavior of users of copyrighted works, licensed under Creative Commons, in relation to the legislative proposal of the Brazilian legal system, and what are the possible legal consequences and legislative updating needs regarding the new dynamics of production and marketing of content in a virtual environment.

Public Power : Within our commons

Ingman Åström, Liza January 2021 (has links)
The Greek agora was created as an invitation to participate in the life of the city and it functioned as the heart of the city and its citizens. I want to bring this back into our commons of the city, by activating it and creating more meeting places. This project started out as a wish to activate our public spaces, and during the first study, I found that we need to engage the citizens more in the process to make it their place and in that way increase the usage. I sent out a questionnaire to all the organisations within the city to understand what was lacking in our public spaces and how the people wanted to develop them further. The answers from the community then turned into my proposition of the public square and parks of my hometown, Örnsköldsvik. In my proposition there are two main quotes from Eric Klinenberg’s book, Palaces for the people, that have been the core of my design‚“It is the interaction between people that creates society and the socially sustainable public urban space”. And the second one;“ Spending time in a market-driven, social setting, even a relatively       inexpensive fast-food restaurant or pastry shop requires paying forthe privilege”  I want to create a place where everyone can interact, no matter age, gender, ethnicity or social background.  In my design I’ve worked with flexibility and that the user is deciding in what way they want to use the space, depending on the time of the day, season of the year and amount of people in the group. One of my inventions is the material storage that enables a spontaneous activity in the city centre. A place where you can find the material for different activities, depending on your interest. It has the same design as the bus stop that we can see in this picture, with a 35 degree roof to make the best use of the pv panels on the roof. This energy source enables the possibility to charge your phone while waiting for the bus or during an activity. It is time for the citizens to connect in our commons.

Institutional Adaptation to Water Scarcity in Utah Irrigation Companies

Patty, Grant 01 December 2018 (has links)
A review of how water institutions in the American West have changed in response to arid conditions as a means of examining the possibility of further change as an adaptation to climate change induced water scarcity. Two institutions are examined, prior appropriation and shares. While much of the American West operates under prior appropriation formally, irrigators have found Coasian methods of lowering transaction costs by forming irrigation companies. Irrigation companies own appropriative rights and redefine them, typically as shares. Lower transaction costs allow irrigators to trade more freely within companies, though trades between companies still face high transaction costs. Using a dataset of Utah’s 1100+ irrigation companies collected from the Utah Division of Water Rights, I measure the extent to which these companies have internalized transaction costs. Because most, if not all, irrigation companies transform appropriative rights into some form of shares, regions facing more water scarcity should be more likely to manage water by using shares rather than appropriative rights. I test the hypothesis that an increase in water scarcity makes trade more valuable and thereby increases the relative opportunity costs of managing a river through appropriative rights versus shares.

An Architecture for Collaborative Math and Science Digital Libraries

Krowne, Aaron Phillip 25 September 2003 (has links)
In this thesis I present Noosphere, a system for the collaborative production of digital libraries. Further, I describe the special features of Noosphere which allow it to support mathematical and scientific content, and how it applies an encyclopedic organizational style. I also describe how Noosphere frees the digital library maintainer from a heavy administrative burden by implementing the design pattern of zero content administration. Finally, I discuss evidence showing that Noosphere works and is sustainable, both in the a priori and empirical senses. / Master of Science
