Tropes of Dis/Ableism as Flexible Stigma| Examining Brenda Connors' 2008 Report as an Instance of Dis/Ableist Polemical Rhetoric

Fletcher, Brandon 10 August 2017 (has links)

Within political discourse, tropes of ability and disability are rhetorically applied in a way that stigmatizes particular individuals or groups by associating the targets of such rhetoric with preexisting normative perspectives framing able-bodiedness as valuable, and disability as undesirable. By analyzing Brenda Connors’ diagnosis of Putin as having Asperger’s syndrome, I argue the language used in her Pentagon funded report constitutes a form of dis/ableist polemical rhetoric. Incorporating Michel Foucault’s scholarship concerning biopolitics, governmentality, and madness, as well as relevant critical disability studies scholarship, I outline how an instance of polemical discourse can invoke disablist and ablest discourses for polemical rhetoric. Ultimately, I argue that dis/ableist polemical rhetoric outlines the role that categories of ability and disability play in international relations and domestic political discourse, which I suggest has important theoretical implications for political communication, critical disability studies, and Foucault scholarship.

Acculturative Stress Indicators Portrayed in American Movies| A Quantitative Content Analysis

Ezeakacha, Chukwuebuka G. 12 April 2019 (has links)

The study investigated the indicators of acculturative stress among immigrants, and the stereotypes associated with immigrants as portrayed by American movies. The purposive sample (N=10) consisted of movies about immigrants produced in America between 2002 and 2017. Thus, drawing from the findings of previous studies on acculturation, the researcher developed a set of acculturative stress indicators (Socialization, Religion, Nutrition, Education, Language, and Citizenship). Also, the immigrant protagonist's race/ethnicity was a key factor that was considered because it is one of the primary basis for their identification in the movies. The ethnicity identified from the movies spread across 8 countries, which were classified into three ethnic categories: Asian, White, and Hispanic or Latino. Based on the results and findings of the study, the movies were found to portray more Socialization Stress Indicators and very little Religion Stress Indicators. There was a significant difference in the portrayal of the Language Stress Indicator between immigrant lead characters from Hispanic or Latino ethnicity and other ethnicities. The implications of movie based stereotypes about immigrants were discussed with regards to accurate and culturally appropriate portrayals. Therefore, the study highlights the need for extensive evidence-based research on the portrayal of immigrants in the movies, especially due to the high level of media consumption in recent times.

A experiência do Brasil em radiodifusão internacional e a representação dos aspectos culturais do país /

Santos, Augusto Junior da Silva. January 2017 (has links)
Abstract: The term international broadcasting refers to a category of state-sponsored media directed at foreign audiences (PRICE, 2002). The strategic operation of these broadcasters might be comprehended from the public diplomacy perspective. In this sense, they are used as an instrument in order to promote, for instance, the image of their respective sponsor countries and to fuel soft power. In light of this context, this research focused on the Brazilian experience in international broadcasting: TV Brasil Internacional, which was established in 2010 within Brazil Communication Company (EBC). The main objective of this study was to identify how this TV channel represents the cultural aspects of the country. Thus, it was conducted a content analysis of its news stories in light of the constitutional principal that establishes that radio and TV stations must promote the national and regional culture of the country (article 221, II). The outcomes showed that different cultural identities and realities of Brazil were conveyed, which might contribute to the deconstruction of stereotypes about this country. However, it was also verified that this Brazilian TV channel has lost its international identity as well as it seems to be moving toward its end. / Mestre

The Nation as a Communicative Construct: Toward a Theory of Dialogic Nationalism

DeCrosta, Joseph T. 18 May 2016 (has links)
This project seeks to explore the subject of nation and nationalism in the context of rhetoric and the philosophy of communication. By exploring ancient tropes of nation through rhetorical figures such as Isocrates in Ancient Greece and Cicero in the Roman Republic; through Kant, the Enlightenment and modernity; and, through postmodern interpretations, I attempt to reconceptualize the nation as a communicative construct while pointing to what may lie ahead for the future. By applying Anderson's (2006) concept of "imagined communities" as an interpretative framework, the nation appears to be a more fluid, contingent space for communication that is grounded in ancient and Enlightenment ideals, but is perhaps reconfiguring in the face of postmodern complexity as advanced by scholars such as Appadurai (1996) and Smith (1979, 1983, 1995, 1998, 2008, 2010). The transition from antiquity and modernity to postmodernity is characterized by what I call a theory of "dialogic nationalism," which has roots in Martin Buber's understanding of dialogue (1988, 1996, 2002) and his writings on nationalism (2005). Dialogic nationalism may serve as an alternative hermeneutic for the nation within the postmodern moment. The experience of international students in the United States and the complex issue of immigration around the world are also explored as practical applications for dialogic nationalism. / McAnulty College and Graduate School of Liberal Arts; / Communication and Rhetorical Studies / PhD; / Dissertation;
