How Organizations Adapt Social Media Capabilities as a Competitive Advantage

Bornhofen, Robert J. 10 August 2013 (has links)

This paper is a systematic review of scholarly studies that examines how organizations enhance their ability to generate value through social media. It explores why some organizations are able to adopt and benefit from social media while others cannot. Specifically, it examines: (i) how people and social networks are essential to create value at the organizational level, (ii) how leadership sets the vision and convinces others on the need for change, and (iii) what types of strategy can be implemented to enable knowledge creation through social networks. Argument is made on the vital importance of two variables in particular—leadership and strategy—and their role in moderating how the organization accepts and incorporates change to enhance overall effectiveness and efficiency. Evidence-based research is used to describe relevant theory and practice through qualitative and quantitative sources. It examines how organizations overcome the hurdles associated with change, and how individuals learn to accept new methods to connect, share knowledge, and create value through Web 2.0 technology.

Social media challenges an organization’s ability to manage individuals and information. It requires a shift in the way people work and think; it requires a culture adjustment in how people collaborate in new, more inclusive ways other than relying on the same imbedded methods and inner core of co-workers for answers.

Keywords: Social Media, Social Networks, Leadership, Strategy, and Organizational Culture.

This research aimed to analyze, through the technique of free recall, the social representations of teachers and students of IF Sudeste MG ? C?mpus Rio Pomba on Information and Communication Technologies in education. The research was conducted with a population of sixty (60) teachers and 200 (two hundred) students of the C?mpus Rio Pomba. The theoretical basis of this research refers to the Theory of Representations, Serge Moscovici. The survey data were analyzed using the technique of frame construction of four houses and the responses were analyzed with the aid of a computer program called EVOC 2003 ?, which combines the frequency of recall of each word to their order of invocation, seeking establish the degree of projection of the elements represented in each group. The results showed that social representations of Information and Communication Technologies in education influence the behavior of both teachers and students of the educational scene inserted in the information society. The data revealed that between teachers' pedagogical practice and the awareness that they have the attitude they should take in knowledge construction mediated by technology there is a great gulf, which is supported by social representations related to the fear of being overcome at the cognitive level of lose the monopoly of knowledge and sharing with the students construction of knowledge. With regard to social representations of students, the results showed that they share high expectations for teachers and school. The element of knowledge is presented as the core of social representations both for teachers and for students. In addition to the social representations of teachers and students of the IF Sudeste MG ? C?mpus Rio Pomba about the Information Technologies and Communication in education, this study sought to reflect on the Information and Communication Technologies in education and rescue some of the social construction of society riopombense on the creation of the Escola Agr?cola de Rio Pomba, today IF Sudeste MG ? C?mpus Rio Pomba . C?mpus Rio Pomba.
